Course Description

The class focuses on the interpretation of poetic texts. The class provides a panorama of Latin American poets.

Course Objectives

The student will become familiar with the most representative works of poets born in Latin America including authors from Brazil.

Program

• The student will become familiar with the influences of Latin American poetry such as modernism; the week of modern art in São Paulo in 1922; the vanguard that arose in Europe and the notoriety of Vicente Huidobro, the pioneer of the vanguard in Latin America.
• The student will register characteristics in the texts for what is erudition, humor, irony, word play, page play, the influence of post-modernism and surrealism.
• The student will distinguish the topics such as daily life (la cotidianidad), death, loneliness, the weight of human existence, love.
• The student will notice discursive genders such as the epic, the “epopeya”, and social critique, amongst others.

Methodology

From the readings and class lectures the student will understand, analyze, and interpret poetic texts. There will be in class discussion over the poetic texts and the student’s thoughts about the topics and readings. The readings focus on the comprehension and interpretation of texts that will be of use in different fields of study, not just this class.

Course Evaluation

The final grade will be determined taking into account:

• Interpretation and discussion of texts in class
• Submission of an essay that includes commentaries and analysis of the readings
