Congratulations!
Now that you landed the job — Here is a checklist of important tasks:
- Make a list of questions for the first day of work, some general and some specific. (Ask questions, but not too many, in order to understand and perform well in your job. Keep them and the answers in a small notebook you keep with you).
- Have an elevator speech-a 30 second story about yourself, your education, prior job, skills and motivation about this job. Use this to introduce yourself to new coworkers and others.
- Show up early! On your first day be to the job 10-15 minutes early. Practice your commute the week before during the same time you will travel. Once you are into a regular schedule, always show up 5 minutes early to be ready for your job commitment.
- Figure out the social landscape. Seek to get along with your coworkers and associate with the right people. Do this by observing your work environment, and get to know people while being mindful to complete your job tasks.
- Relax. You will be nervous before starting your first day, but do your best to be well rested, be prepared and be on time your first and every day of your job.
- Smile! Smile when you meet new people and shake their hands. Introduce yourself, and express your eagerness to be at the new job. Your coworkers will remember you.
- Dress the part. Be as professional as your interview. Be sure you know the word dress code before you start the job. Ideally, you dress to blend into the workplace.
- Listen and observe. The best thing to do the first few days of a new job is listen, listen, listen and take lots of notes in your notebook!
- Project high energy! Everyone wants to work with enthusiastic, upbeat people, so outwardly project good energy.
- Learn your job description. Your employer will give you a written job description, which sets forth your duties. It must be your goal to master these duties. There may be other duties impliedly expected of you, so find out what those are and master them as you learn your job.
- Put your cell phone on silent! You MUST be 100% present during your employment. Put your phone away. You can check it during your break or lunch time.
- Set-up your voicemail on your cell phone, as your employer may need to leave you a message.
