CoSA EXPECTATIONS

As a CoSA student, you are training to become a professional. This implies the highest standard in attitude and respect for your work, and to those with whom you study and train: your instructors, administrators, and fellow artists. It is our expectation that all students will work hard to earn above-average grades in their CoSA classes. Grades are based on the following:

  1. attendance and participation in ALL of your CoSA classes;
  2. follow-through and completion of assigned course work;
  3. growth and use of acquired skills.

Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in their non-CoSA classes and a 2.75 in their CoSA classes to remain eligible for CoSA. Students whose grades fall below this standard will be placed on CoSA probation and may be subject to removal from CoSA classes and dismissal from the program.  If dismissed from the program, Inter-District Transfer (IDT) students will lose their IDT status, and be required to return to their home district.

All CoSA classes are factored into the student's overall academic GPA at Coronado High School. (See individual conservatory curriculum.) All CoSA courses appear on the student’s official Coronado High School transcript. Some courses qualify for University of California “f” credit, and are noted on the curriculum.

At the end of each semester, students in every conservatory participate in an instructors’ jury, in which the student presents evidence of technical skills. The first semester jury informs the student of areas of excellence and areas of weakness to be strengthened; the second semester jury determines whether the student's progress has been such that the student will be given permission to return to CoSA for another year’s study.

Guidelines for Using Outside Materials in the Classroom

ATTENDANCE

        Please refer to the Coronado High School Attendance policies, which can be found online at: http://chs.coronadousd.net/students-parents/attendance/.  CoSA classes are subject to the same attendance policies as CHS classes.  Because all CoSA courses appear on the student’s official Coronado High School transcript, attendance in CoSA classes is mandatory.

CoSA FAQs about Attendance

What do I do when my student is absent for the day?

Call the CHS attendance office @ (619) 522-8907, then press “1” to leave a message with the date, nature of absence and other requested information.

What do I do when my student is leaving early from school?

Call the CHS attendance office @ (619) 522-8907, press “0” to speak to a person.  All early releases must be called in as early in the day as possible.

What do I do when my student has outside activities during CoSA? Students must request release from CoSA classes through a contract, available in the CoSA office. The parent, coach/director, and CoSA teacher must sign the contract, and the CoSA Director must approve it. Not all contracts are approved, and the student is advised to check with the CoSA Director before committing to an outside activity. The CHS Attendance Clerk records these approved contract absences as excused.

Can my child still perform in a CoSA evening, school-day performance if they miss school?  Students must attend at least 4 periods during the Non-CoSA day (defined as periods 0 – 6).  Students who come to school, subsequently become ill and leave school may not participate in a performance.  Pre-arranged doctor appointments will not make the student ineligible to perform.

Can my student make up for a non-excused absence that was for an arts-related, off-campus experience? Students may make up a non-excused arts-related absence with an approved Weekend Make-up Day.  Complete the form, and submit it to the CHS Attendance Clerk within 48 hours of the absence/event.

CoSA Probation and Dismissal

All CoSA students have talents and abilities that provide them with the opportunity to fully participate and gain knowledge and skills from the CoSA experience.  If a student is not actively engaged in working to improve her or his skill set, the student will be placed on probation. If the student in collaboration with CoSA staff is still unable to contribute to and gain from the learning environment, then he or she will be dismissed from the program.
