General Information

For a general overview of the DF64 grinder, check out Portakeeper on Youtube. He has taken the grinder apart and used it extensively. He provides lots of good information about the workflow of the grinder and is honest about his usage.  James Hoffmann also has a review of the grinder but it is also a comparison to the Niche Zero grinder.

There are two burr options available with the DF64 grinder. Both are the same Italmil burrs, however one is steel and the other is steel with a titanium coating. The only difference between the burrs is the lifespan. The titanium coated burrs will last roughly 2-3 times the life of steel burrs.

There are two large forum threads for this grinder. There is a lot of content, and discussion on these forums. Most of the new things you hear on this page probably originated from one of two forums.

Purchasing the DF64 Grinder

There are a few different dealers of the DF64 grinder and where you purchase will vary depending on the country you currently live in.

The designer and manufacturer of the grinder sells them on Alibaba and will ship them worldwide. This was a good option at the beginning of this grinder’s popularity however as there is an increase in demands from resellers they will likely be slower to ship out your grinder if you choose to purchase from them. It is also unknown to what extent they will provide warranty support if an issue arises with your order.

Dial Indicator for Grind Setting

Let's be honest, the coffee bean for grind indication on the DF64 is the worst part about it. Luckily there are some simple solutions:

Sticker for Grind Setting

Pretty much every DF64 has a different point where the burrs touch (at least according to the grind setting numbers). If you would like to put a new sticker on your turn dial, you can print a new one with paper for stickers or vinyl.

You can also use a hair dryer to heat up your existing number dial, peel it off and reposition it where you can.

Resolving Pop-corning 

The most promising anti pop corning mods are made by Ben30 on Coffeforums. These are his designs. According to him, they both work well and generally accomplish the same thing.

1. This one adds a funnel to the bottom of the bellows and is similar to how the Lagom P64 solves popcorning.

Burr Upgrades

There is a lot of talk about burr upgrades on the DF64 and there are many options to look at. However there are a couple of requirements for burrs in the DF64. They need to have an outer diameter of 64mm and an inner diameter of 38mm.

Clump Crusher

There are some people who have taken out the standard clump crushing plate in the DF64 and replaced it (with modifications) with a clump crusher from a Mythos grinder. This one is a better design and should last longer than the stock DF64 plate. If you’re interested in this check coffee forums for more information on the mod.
