My dearest Pauly.

I wrote to Stef[1] yesday & tonight before going to bed, I must have a talk with you= I felt indeed a Sadman parting from my dear Rugby boys!

So glad to hear you have got your [remove?] into the Science side, it seems to me you will be taking the school [Cat?]: exam younger than Stef did?

Also v. pleased to hear yr. music master was content with you – when you have had some practices of the duets, get Stef to play them with you. Don’t forget, that I would like you both to play the Bach middle movement for a house competition –

It is awful the coal strike continuing/[2]

& v. cold fun for you all! No super warm baths – & long bathes– as at 3 Fitz Johns’!![3]

Do you know my latest plan, I am not going to Bagnoles now, I have postponed it till autumn, as there is too much to do here – I am glad, because besides other things, I can be in Rugby on speech day – So engage a room+ for 2 people at once– in the nice house aunt may was in –

Your little tailor has sent in the bill for yr. trousers, which I hope are beautiful, & hope your coat also has been well altered –

Today Mlle went to the Caledonian Market.[4] She says it was such a [low?] looking place, & a man was nearly [doing?] her out of 2/–! She bought choc= for me, & you – 2 [lbs?]= will be sent to you both tomorrow, so be on the look-out –

Daddy has so much to do, that in his last letter, he said nothing about going to Sth America – I knew he need have no anxiety about getting work – He is still in Washington.[5] Continue writing to the Corcoran Gallery of Art – But put on Envelope “please forward”/

John[6] is so happy with his bicycle – which however is too big for him – but he managed to stick on, & flies about the garden!

What a lot was going on last hols= really we must be quieter next hols!

Pat[7] likes his school, & today his blazer came back – it had to be made from for him – It is bright pink trimmed with black & looks so nice on him –.

He & I have reads together after Dinner & have just finished the life of Christopher Columbus – I am going tomorrow to Mrs Bowlby’s for the [Whitsun?] hols= just Sat – to Monday visit – Mlle with Pat, John going to [pie–mie?] on Hampstead Heath on

[2] On 31 March 1921, the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George (1863-1945), returned the coal mines to private ownership after they had been nationalised during the First World War. The mine owners demanded wage cuts, and, in response, the Miners’ Federation of Great Britain called a strike and halted the movement of coal.
