Dear Marczi

I got your nice, kind letter of the 7th of this month and was very interested in what you wrote. I was glad to read that you like the picture of the King of Greece [likely 7817] – I personally believe it to be one of my masterpieces. Tomorrow the King of Greece and his retinue are setting out on their tour of duty – we shall go out to cheer them – at the railway station. The situation is very difficult for artists here at the moment – and everyone is enormously envious of me, knowing how busy I am – the royal family are obliged, in their own interests, to favour British artists first and foremost. Much has changed here in the last few years – I wonder if you saw the issue of Pesti Hírlap – that had – my Nemzeti Szalon painting in it – a [illegible] by Siklóssy, and my portrait dedicated to Siklóssy [111404]^[1] – Would you say that the Károly Grill publishing house is the foremost one in Hungary? They wrote to me – they would like to bring out my autobiography in Hungarian.

At the beginning of this month, instead of 2000 francs – one thousand francs were sent to Munich in error – a few days later I wrote to my bank in Paris asking them to forward another 1000 francs immediately

To my surprise the following letter came from my bank – what on earth is the meaning of it? Did you leave it in Munich [sic] – that the money would be in your son’s name?^[2] Write at once – so that I can deal with it.

Return this letter – enclosed is another impertinent letter from a distant relation – burn it – did you receive the big reproduction of the Regent’s portrait [110886] from Pesti Hírlap? Yes – if possible – send the Corvin Chain picture, with all due care – So next year the money will go out in your son’s name –

On the 16th of this month there will be a gala concert – for hard-up members of the Árpád University [sic] student body^[3] – they have appointed me honorary president – I know what that means – I sent them a little bit of money^[4] – it is difficult to keep these people at a distance –

I am now devoting heart and soul to my big canvas^[5] – which makes me very happy – and I am busy with other things too. On the 20th of this month we are giving a dinner in honour of Count Széchényi and his wife – and numerous other guests are coming after dinner – he has always been very gracious to me, I had to do it.^[6] I don’t like Khuen-Héderváry –

We are well – everything is going well with Henry’s boy, thank God – his wife and child are coming here in 10 days’ time^[7] – spending two weeks here before going down to the country – they have to take great care of the baby – I am sorry you can’t come – Lucy and I might go to Austria for 10 days after Christmas, to a nice snowy place – and we could meet there – and you could spend 10 days with us amid the snow-clad mountains

Szerén^[8] wrote to say that she has been feeling weak again – did – Gábor^[9] and Dezső^[10] get the English illustrated paper with the picture of the Greek

A request for donations of 50 fillér, given as the nominal purchase price for a desk diary sent out with the enclosed request slip. The purpose of the initiative is explained as follows:

We are asking for donations of at least 50 fillér, upon acceptance of the desk diary sent with this slip. One hundred thousand such 50-fillér contributions could save the life of this philanthropical institution.

The portrait of our former President, the late Count Albert Apponyi, painted by Mr Fülöp László and presented to the Hungarian nation, is being made available in a beautiful full-colour reproduction, exclusive rights to produce which have been granted to our institution by the artist for the benefit of the sick and needy. The reproductions can be purchased for 3 pengő, by filling out the attached order form.

E hó 7 ről K. jó leveledet vettem, melynek tartalma nagyon érdekelt, örvendtem hallani hogy a görög király képét szereted – magam is úgy hiszem hogy kiváló munkáim közé tartozik –Holnap indul a görög királyi kíséretével – nagy felelésegű[?] útjára – mi künn leszünk őt üdvözölni – a Pályaudvaron – Itt az utolsó időben nagyon nehezek a viszonyok a festők részére – s roppant irigykednek reám – tudva mennyire vagyok elfoglalva – a kiralyi családnak kell a saját érdekükben az angol művészeket mindenekelőtt támogatni miért –tartózkodom – Itt is sok változott az utolsó években – vajjon láttad a Pesti Hírlap azon számát – melyben – a nemzeti szalon képem jelent meg – egy [illegible] Siklóssytól, s magam arczképe dedikálva Siklóssyhoz – vajjon mondhatnád e hogy a – Grill Károly könyvkiadó czég az első Magyarországon – ők írták – szeretnék életem könyvet magyarban kiadni?

E hó elején tévedésből 2000 frank... helyett – egy ezer frankot fizettek be Münchenbe – néhány nappal később írtam Parisba Bankomnak hogy továbbítsanak azonnal még 1000 frankot

csodálkozásomra a következő levél jött Bankomtól – vajjon mit jelent ez? Talán te meg hagytad münchenbe – hogy az összeg fiad nevére fog jönni írjál azonnal – hogy elintézhessen.

Küld [sic] vissza e levelet-mellékelve ismét egy impertinens távoli család levél – égesd el –megkaptad e a Kormányzó nagy reproductióját a Pesti Hírlaptól – Igenis – ha lehet-vigyázattal küld meg a Korvin láncz képét – Tehát a jövőben a pénz fiad nevére indul –

E hó 16. án díszhangverseny lesz – az Árpád Egyetemi hallgatók szegény sorsú tagjai részére – díszelnöknek tettek – tudom mit jelent – küldtem egy kis összeget – nehéz távoltartani –

Most szívvel lélekkel nagy képemen dolgozom – mi boldogít – s egyébként vagyok elfoglalva – E hó 20- Széchényi Gróf és neje tiszteletére vacsorát adunk – s számos vendég jönn vacsora után – velem szemben mindig tisztelettel volt megkellett tennem. Khuen Hédervaryt nem szeretem –

Mi jól vagyunk – hála Istennek Henry fiával minden rendben megy – 10 nap mulva ide jön neje s gyermeke – két hétre milelőtt le mennek falura – rendkívül kell vigyázniuk a csecsemővel – Sajnáljuk hogy nem jöhetsz – Lehet hogy Lucyvel 10. napra Karácsony után Ausztriába megyünk egy szép havas helyre – s ott találkozhatnánk – s velünk lennél a hótakarta hegyekben 10 napig

Szerén írt hogy ismét gyöngélkededt – vajjon – Gábor és Dezső megkapták e az angol illusztrált lapot a Görög
