2: After each person has shared what they remember, return to the head silhouette and inside the head, write your thoughts and reactions to the video. Did anything surprise you? Inspire you? Anger you? You will have three minutes to write.

After writing, turn and talk to your partner. As you share, you may find that you didn’t get to write down everything you were thinking. It is OK to include thoughts and opinions that you didn’t write down. Please remember that it is OK for people to disagree and to have different perspectives. The purpose is not to convince anyone that your thoughts or perspectives are right. It is helpful to think about how to express your perspective in a manner that is respectful and does not demean a group of people or a person.

3: After each person has a chance to share, a few people from the class will be asked to share with everyone. If you are going to share something your partner said, please ask their permission.

After the activity it is wonderful to keep talking about your thoughts and reactions with your peers and others. However it is not appropriate to talk about your partner and whether you liked or disliked their opinion.

Please remember that the ‘n-word’ used in this video is part of a historical record to help viewers understand the struggle that Lena Smith was facing. This word should not be repeated. It is offensive.
