⬠ Humfox Stuart

Description

Hull of a Fox Armored Car and a Humber Mk.IV 37mm turret. These vehicles were originally used by the Dutch and then inherited by the Indonesian Army after the end of the National Revolution. The Indonesian Army classified the Humfox as a version of the Stuart tank, so that’s most likely why its existence is rarely mentioned. Only 1 known Humfox remains as a display piece in the Pusdikpal (Equipment Education Centre) in Bandung

⬠ Chi-Ha

Description

Captured Japanese Type 97 Chi-Ha. One was obtained by the Indonesian Youths in Surabaya in November 1945. Currently displayed in the Brawijaya Museum in Malang. From the turret it looks like the 57mm variant and not the 47mm gun. The display tank doesn’t have the 57mm because presumably the cannon seems to have been removed from the turret and was replaced by a mock barrel.

⬠ Overvalwagen (Type B) AA

Description

An armored vehicle based on the 1940 Chevrolet COE trucks and was manufactured in Surabaya. The anti-air version is equipped with a .50 cal water-cooled browning and 4 additional 7.7mm vickers guns on each side of the hull. Was used in the defense of the Dutch East Indies and captured by the Japanese, and then saw service again during the Indonesian National Revolution. Several of the Overvalwagen were converted for use in railways by the Dutch. The remaining stock Overvalwagens were then transferred to the Indonesian Army after the end of the National Revolution and presumably all of them were transferred into armored rail vehicles as well. Two still remain as museum pieces, but both are of the rail variant.

⬠ M4A3E8 (105)

Description

M4A3 Sherman with HVSS suspension. The British (and then the Dutch) operated around 21 Sherman tanks during the National Revolution, and 3 tanks were subsequently destroyed by the Indonesians with captured IJAF cannons. It’s worth noting that there’s barely any images that show the tank in Indonesian service. What is fully known is that the KNIL transferred 9 Shermans of either M4A1 or M4A3 (75mm & 105mm) to Indonesia after the Round Table Conference. The M4A3 is the only suggestion because the m4a1 does not have any pictures of it being used. After some discussion the turret seems to be the 105mm rather than the 75mm. All of the Shermans are presumed to have been salvaged for scraps since there’s almost no trace of them left in Indonesia, except for the singular T14E1 ARV in Bandung.

Description

Improved version of the PT-76 with a D-56TS stabilized gun and other upgrades. They were among the first few types of tanks purchased by Indonesia in 1962 along with the French’s AMX-13s. Around 50 PT-76B were purchased from the Soviet Union. The PT-76Bs were assigned to the Navy Commando Corps in preparation for Operation Jayawijaya, the invasion of Papua, however this operation didn’t happen because on the day of the operation the Dutch had given up their control over Papua in the New York Agreement. The trucks were first obtained in around the 70s, they were originally used by the Americans in the Vietnam War. Vehicle is a right-hand drive but unknown whether it’s a license version by KIA from South Korea, source states it is a REO M35 so it’s likely to be a modification. The truck is used by many different branches of the Armed Forces and in addition participated in many different military operations throughout the years. This vehicle was used by the Paskhas (AFB defense corp) and was fitted with the 20mm Zastava M55 triple gun with a practical fire rate of around 700 rpm with a max elevation of around 83° and a depression of around -5°. ⬠ FV601 Saladin (Retrofit)

Description

Originally obtained in around the 60s along with the Ferret and Saracen with the role of a Fire Support Vehicle. Saladin was involved in securing the capital city during the 30th September failed coup. The Indonesian Saladin was retrofitted with a changing of the petrol engine to a diesel one and a semi-automatic Daimler pre-select transmission. This results in an increase of range and weight and a small decrease of speed. For the weaponry the retrofit introduces a periscope which is the same version as the one on the Scorpion tanks as well as a longer barrel version of the cannon. Additionally there is also a winch at the front hull. The retrofitted versions are still being used albeit sparingly.

⬠ AMX-13/75 FL-10 (SM1)

Description

The first 50 amx-13s were purchased between 1960-1965 to bolster Operation Trikora. The tank was domestically retrofitted in Bengpuspalad Central Equipment Workshop in 1995 based on the specifications of the AMX-13SM1 modernization of Singapore. It included a new Detroit Diesel 6V-53T engine and other modernization like the ZF-5WG-180 automatic transmission, new electrical system, and hydro-pneumatic "Dunlopstrut" suspension. The difference is that it is done locally and does not have the upgraded gunner sight thus cannot fire APFSDS, and also the hull was not reworked. The Indonesians have around 300 amx-13s of all variants and they are still continuing to be used and modernized today.

SBS LT (20mm)

Description

Light tank developed from the AMX-13 VCI. The only Indonesian tank with actual desert camouflage. Classified as a light tank but actually more like an APC. There are two versions, this one with the 20mm cannon and the other with a MLRS launcher. The 20mm is likely to be a Rh202 because that's the only 20mm autocannon that Indonesia uses, and the sources state that the gun is of foreign origin, whereas the rest of the vehicle is domestically made. The status of the prototype is unknown, although it's probably just shelved.

AMX-10P Marine

Description

AMX-10P with improved amphibious capabilities and modifications to increase the top speed in water developed for the Indonesian Marine Corps. The AMX-10P arrived in the 1980s. Around 80 units were obtained. It is armed with the 20mm autocannon fitted in the Toucan II turret. The tank is rarely mentioned or used in missions because according to the Marine Corps it is not up to standard with a handful of issues. Even though this variant has improved amphibious capabilities, they were not used in amphibious activities and only used in dry operations by the Marine Corps because of the vehicle’s tendency to flip over. One of the tanks has been preserved as a display piece in the Marine Corps HQ in Surabaya.

PT-76M

Description

A modernization/retrofit for the PT-76Bs. Due to the 30th September Movement and the fallout with the soviet union, spare parts for the Soviet tanks were limited. So it was decided that the PT-76s were to be retrofitted with western equipment instead. There’s two versions, one PT-76(M) retrofitted with the PT-2000 upgrade by NIMDA in the 90s, and this one, which is based on the virtually identical domestic upgrade conducted by PT Lumindo Artha Sejati. Changes include a switch of armament to the Cockerill mk3 90mm gun, new detroit diesel engine, and a new T157 tracks by Chaiseri defense, a Thai company. Even though the gun was changed it still cannot fire APFSDS, armament is the same as the scorpion, HE, HEAT, HESH and phosphorous smoke shells. The tank is also planned to be able to fire Falarick 90 ATGM in the future.

Nicknamed “The Devil's Car” by its opponents. The tank was purchased and delivered in 1974. Around 200 units of all variants were purchased, although only 58 are still in service. It is armed with the 90mm low-pressure MECAR gun capable of firing APFSDS-T, HESH, and HEAT, and HE. The vehicle is amphibious and can travel up to 80km/h even with flat tires. Harimau MT (Prototype)

Description

Collaboration project between Indonesian PT PINDAD and Turkish FNSS. This specific version is of the 2017 prototype before the production model improvements and hull reworks. The easiest way to tell the difference is that for the older pre-production version, the seam between the upper and lower glacis is rounded, as well as the upper glacis’s shallower angle and that there are no hump on the upper glacis for the better viewports. The tank was showcased in the 2017 Armed Forces parade. The tank uses a Cockerill 3105 turret with LRF and thermals, the same that can be found on the CT-CV105HP turret. It can fire HEAT, HESH, APFSDS, and Falarick 105mm ATGM.

Komodo 4x4 Mistral Atlas

Description

PINDAD Komodo 4x4 with the Mistral Atlas SHORAD launchers. The vehicle uses a rigid portal axle with bushing arm suspension and coil spring - telescopic shock absorber anti rolling bar. The Mistral Atlas variant unlike other Komodo 4x4s uses a manual transmission rather than an automatic one. One unfortunate drawback of the design is the gunner must operate the launcher out in the open. The spare missiles are stored under the gunner on the rear of the vehicle. Unlike the Simbad launcher the Atlas has a seat for the gunner. It has thermals and IFF and can be used alone without supporting vehicles. The vehicle was originally showcased in 2012, and they’re currently serving with the Air Defence Artillery Battalion 10 and 2 of Kodam Jaya and Kostrad respectively.
