Kindle Fire Tablets at the Neshobe School LibraryFile_001.jpeg

WHAT YOU NEED:

Kindle Fire Tablet

Charging cord (marked “NESHOBE”)

HOW TO:

Turn the Kindle on using the power button on the top right side of the Kindle. If the power has been turned off, you will need to press and hold the button until the Amazon logo shows up on the screen. If the Kindle has just been put to sleep, press the button once and it will wake up. Then swipe right to left on the screen.

The Kindle Fire tablets are pre-loaded with books from this year’s Dorothy Canfield Fisher nominee list. When the tablet wakes up, you will see book covers in the carousel. Usually, these are the books that have been loaded onto the Kindle, but sometimes they are samples of books sent by Amazon. The best way to see what books are intentionally on the Kindle is by tapping “Books” at the top of the screen. This will show you the covers of the books that are on the tablet.

To read a book, simply tap on the cover. This will open the book. It may open to a later part of the book. To get to to beginning, tap the center of the page and use the slider at the bottom of the screen all the way to the left.

To turn the page, swipe from right to left.

To change the font size, screen color, brightness, margin size, or spacing, tap the center of the screen and then tap “Aa View” at the top of the screen.

AUDIOBOOKS:

To access the audiobooks on the device, scroll to the right in the list of content at the top of the screen. Tap “Audiobooks” to see all the audiobooks that have been loaded on the device. Tap the cover of the book to open it, and it will begin playing automatically. You can plug in headphones at the top of the tablet, or you can listen with the speakers. Use the up and down buttons on the left side of the tablet to adjust the volume.

Some books offer Immersion Reading. This simultaneously opens the e-book and the audiobook, and highlights each word as the narration progresses. To access Immersion Reading, open the e-book, tap the center of the screen and see if there is a triangular “Play” button in the bottom menu. You can also open an audiobook with a picture of a book in the top right corner, open the menu (three horizontal lines in the top left corner) and choose “Switch to Immersion Reading”.

TO CHARGE THE KINDLE:

Plug in the power cord next to the power button at the top right side of the Kindle.
