Create your own Cell City!

Every cell has cytoplasm. Floating around the cytoplasm are small structures called organelles. Organelles are similar to the organs of your body. Each organelle carries out a specific function necessary for the cell to survive. Now imagine a cell as a city or other environment. The organelles may represent companies, places, or parts of an environment that you chose because they have similar functions or jobs.

Instructions:

  1. Choose a place to compare organelles of the cell with jobs, places, or companies that would be found in the environment you chose. Choose from one of the following environments or make up your own:
  1. Farm
  2. Mall
  3. Airport
  4. Our School
  5. Movie Theatre
  6. U of M Football Stadium
  7. Target Field
  1. For all of the following organelles make analogies for what the organelle would do in the environment you chose.
  1. On a separate sheet of paper write down the organelle, and what part of the environment it would be like and why.
  1. For example if I chose our school as my environment:

Organelle: Nucleus

Job: The front office because they control the whole school.

  1. OR you can make a detailed drawing of your environment and label the parts of the environment that would represent the organelles. Your drawing should be good enough that an explanation is not required for the reasoning behind the job/place you chose for the organelle.

Be sure to include the following organelles in your assignment:

  1. Nucleus
  2. Cell Membrane
  3. Endoplasmic Reticulum
  4. Ribosomes
  5. Nucleolus
  6. Cytoplasm
  7. Mitochondria
  8. Chloroplast
  9. Lysosome
  10. Vacuole
