29 January, 1918

My dearest Kate,

Rotten weather. Rain, rain, rain and mud galore. Up to our knees in it. Shifted back from the front line for a few days rest which I needed badly. The guns go off all day and all night but I don’t take too much notice now. I am eating a lump of homemade toffee. A Digger gave it to me.

How was Christmas? Did you like the lace I got you? Miss you all so much.

I was in the line on Christmas day. Rained all day and all night. Got wet through and covered with mud. So cold. Lots of fireworks though. Shells going off all around. Flames and flares. Makes a man keep his nut down. Food comes up to the front in sandbags. It’s always full of grit and fluff and string. Guess what we had for Christmas dinner? It was bully beef stew. Boy did I curse!

Got to go now. Hope everyone at home is well.

To my dearest Parents,

Rain, Rain, Rain, there is so much rain, guess what I got to eat today Chicken stew, I am tired of eating this stew everyday it’s so disgusting  and i can't eat it anymore .How are you guys. How is it over there. Today i was at the first line makes a man’s nut go down. How is winter there Its so cold here , rained all night here, it’s  very hard to sleep here. At the front line  i went all muddy  and wet, did you like the jacket i gave you guys for winter . I just wish those guns would go so I can have some rest for tomorrow . All the mud water everything is on me i am feeling angry.Make sure you don’t worry about me i'll come to you guys soon .

I am feeling as soggy as mud now because sleeping here is not nice it’s a risk.

Go to go now I am at the front line tomorrow as well as today it’s very hard. Need some rest now.
