Dear /u/purpleslug
At Questions to the Prime Minister this week, /u/eelsemaj99 told me that
“I would suggest is that the Rt Hon member to send a letter once Iran has broken their limits and we'll see about making a statement.”
This morning, Iranian media reported that Iran has now breached their enrichment limits as set out in the JCPOA. The International Atomic Energy Agency has also today confirmed that Iran has breached that limit. This is an action we completely condemn and believe the Foreign Secretary would also do the same. Therefore, as per the Prime Minister’s wishes, we are writing to you to request you make an urgent statement to the House on the matter within the next 5 to 7 days. Alternatively, should the Foreign Secretary have good reasons for not wishing to make a statement in the House publicly, we invite him to brief the Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, and the Major Unofficial Spokesperson for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs on the decision by Iran, the actions the Government is taking and the consultations that have been had with the P5+1 and other world powers on taking more coordinated actions, with that briefing taking place within the next week.
As the world today becomes a more dangerous place, the Government should recognise the importance of informing the House and opposition parties on actions the Government is taken to keep us safe where it is appropriate to do so.
We look forward to hearing back from you as soon as convenient on which of our offers you are willing to take up. Should you be unable to respond to this letter within 48 hours, we shall jointly demand a statement to the House from you via an urgent question.
Signed
