My dear friend,

I received here your nice letter, and the charming response to Mr Brooks you’ve sent me[1] – –

You must have had a lovely time in Italy –

How I would have appreciated to be in Rome with you ! And to study all ancient Rome. We must do that once !

What I did was more prosaic – I went for 15 days at Crous s/ Seine near Montaux – charming place – splendid air – in a magnificent view. and came down here after. I am going back to Paris in 2 days – and I do hope to see you there very soon.

Your picture – in connection with the great war will be so interesting[2] – splendid I feel sure – certainly I shall give you my sketch [110993] – and would love to come over to London[3] –

Armand de Gramont[4] has not been very well

[2] De László had planned to paint a picture for his own pleasure on a subject in connection with the First World War. He wished to depict: “not men fighting, but the still nobler part of suffering women at home; women of all classes in a chapel surrounding the burning candles for the fallen souls” (Rutter, pp. 372-373). The painting was never started, although many studies and sketches remained in the artist’s studio on his death.

[3] De László had requested her study portrait [110993] for inclusion in his exhibition at Knoedler’s: Knoedler & Co., London, Portraits by Philip A. de László, M.V.O. June–July 1933, see DLA020-0289, letter from Comtesse Marguerite de Mun to de László, 15 May 1933. Due to insufficient gallery space, the study portrait [110993] was ultimately not included in the exhibition, see DLA020-0290, letter from de László to Comtesse Marguerite de Mun, 14 June 1933.
