Rikers Debate Project Working Groups

This workstream focuses on handling RDP’s relationship with its legal and banking partners (Davis Polk and PNC, respectively), gaining/maintain tax-exempt status, and litigation/legal strategy.
This workstream coordinates with universities in order to recruit volunteers, gain resources, or potentially open up new branches.
This workstream handles RDP’s communications with the outside community, handling social media, the website, and potential media opportunities.
This workstream handles the organization’s political activity and legislative efforts, which are focused on increasing the well-being and quality of life of students, both dukring and after their incarceration.
This workstream focuses on raising funds for RDP’s operations.
This workstream focuses on putting together teach-ins, panels, and social events to introduce RDP to the community at large, including the public debates with our students.
This workstream focuses on making sure the GRVC and Rosie classes keep attendance, have a large resource of new cases to pull from, and develops the overall curriculum.
This workstream focuses on life for our students after they leave Rikers, including if they are sent to a different facility. The group also works to connect students with the different resources they might need as they reintegrate into society.
This workstream focuses on opening new debate classes on Rikers Island and elsewhere.

This workstream focuses on constantly evaluating RDP’s overall utility, focusing on designing metrics to determine the program’s impact on students.
RIKERS PROGRAMS COORDINATION
This workstream coordinates with other programs on Rikers Island to better share resources and communicate issues to appropriate DOC personnel. This group works to create new partnerships with the other NGOs and service providers on Rikers and coordinate across programs to improve the experiences of our students.
LEGAL RESEARCH AND PRO BONO PROJECTS
This workstream oversees Rikers Debate Project’s summer legal internship program. The group also identifies new areas where research is necessary and partners with attorneys who can support these projects on a pro bono basis.
This workstream focuses on developing materials for and planning the launch/maintenance of classes in Spanish. One of these classes will launch Summer 2017 on Rikers.
