Ensembles, Grade 6 6th Grade Band is intended for students who have previous instrumental music experience and are interested in continuing development of their musical skills. Sufficient instruction and experience on a band instrument to play band materials at the 6th grade level is a prerequisite. Beginners are accepted at the discretion of the director. In this course, students will learn musical skills and concepts through a variety of wind band literature. Musicians will develop their note reading, rhythmic skills, and musical vocabulary while focusing on tone production and instrumental technique. Students will work to develop performance skills including playing in tune, performing with expression, and responding to the conductor and to their fellow musicians. Assessments will include both formative and summative performance skill assessments. 6th grade band meets one period per six day cycle during our activities period. Band members are also required to attend one small group lesson each six day cycle in a small group held during school hours on a rotating basis. AP Music Theory / IB Music AP Music Theory: This year long course is designed for students with extensive musical background who have plans on continuing musical study at the collegiate level. Prior knowledge of harmonic analysis, scales, keys, intervals and keyboard skills is required prior to enrollment. In addition to advanced-level music theory, students will study musical form and music history, with extensive work in aural skills, melodic and harmonic dictation, music transcription and composition. The curriculum is designed to provide the necessary background for the successful completion of the AP test in Music Theory. IB MUSIC: Music functions as a means of personal and communal identity and expression, and embodies the social and cultural values of individuals and communities. Music, and all of its associations, may vary considerably from one musical culture to another: yet music may share similarities. Such richness offers a variety of ways to encounter and engage with a constantly changing world. Students can expect to experience opportunities to develop curiosity and understand both familiar and unfamiliar musical worlds. Through their study of music, they will learn to hear relationships of pitch in sound, pattern in rhythm, and unfolding sonic structures. Through participating in the study of music, students are able to explore the similarities, differences and links in music from within our own culture and that of others across time. Informed and active musical engagement will allow students to explore and discover relationships between lived human experience and specific sound combinations and technologies, thus knowing more fully, the world around us, and the nature of humanity. IB Music is a two-year course. | |
