Grade 6: Vocabulary for the Week of May 13, 2013

 

 Aim: to identify vocabulary words that will be added to the word wall

 1.cuisine (n)  a style  of of cooking, especially as characteristic of a particular country, region, or establishment

eg. The restaurant specializes in Indian cuisine .

2. nape (n) the back of a person’s neck

eg. He grabbed me by the nape of my neck.

3. composed (adj) having one’s feelings and expression under control; calm

eg. The woman tried to compose herself when she heard the bad news.

4. industrialist (n) a person involved in the ownership and management of an industry

eg. Mr. Wexler was an industrialist.

5. legacy (n)  an amount of money or property left to someone in a will

He left some neighbors a legacy to remember him by.

6. pile (n) a heap of things laid or lying one on top of another; a large amount of something

eg. I have a pile of work to catch up on; My books were stacked in a neat pile

7. spasms (n)   a sudden involuntary muscular contraction or convulsive movement

The little girl was having spasms during a seizure.

8. averted (v) to prevent something from happening; to turn away or aside; to avoid a confrontation

eg. The girl averted her eyes during each gory scene of the movie.

9. putrid (adj)  decaying or rotting and emitting a fetid smell

eg. The old house has a putrid smell.

 

10. pyrotechnic (adj) of or relating to fireworks

eg. The sun flickered in the window like a pyrotechnic display.
