Subject: Wij eisen een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren!

Geachte,

Ik schrijf u als bezorgde en betrokken Belgische burger. Ik wil uw onmiddellijke aandacht en steun vragen om de voortdurende genocide in Palestina een halt toe te roepen. Het lijden van de bevolking in Palestina neemt met de dag toe.

Allereerst vraag ik u om uw invloed te gebruiken om Israël te eisen om de blokkade van Gaza op te heffen, zodat onmiddellijke levering van noodhulp en toegang tot elektriciteit mogelijk wordt. Het is van het grootste belang dat burgers toegang hebben tot basisbehoeften, zoals voedsel, schoon water en medische voorraden.

Bovendien dring ik er bij u op aan om te pleiten voor een stopzetting van het gebruik van witte fosforwapens door Israëlische strijdkrachten. Het gebruik van witte fosfor als brandwapen in gebieden met burgerbevolking is verboden volgens het Verdrag inzake bepaalde conventionele wapens van de Verenigde Naties, zoals benadrukt door Human Rights Watch. Het gebruik van dergelijke wapens met een niet-onderscheidende werking is niet alleen in strijd met het internationaal recht, maar leidt ook tot ernstige schade.

Verder eis ik ook een militair embargo. De wapenhandel tussen België en Israël moet stoppen. Het VN-Wapenhandelsverdrag stelt dat de doorvoer van wapens verboden is naar landen waar een groot risico bestaat dat het materiaal gebruikt zal worden voor het plegen van genocide, misdaden tegen de menselijkheid of oorlogsmisdaden.

Samengevat wil ik niets minder dan een onmiddellijke en duidelijke oproep tot een permanent staakt-het-vuren en een onmiddellijke opheffing van de blokkade op de Gazastrook. Er moet een militair embargo met Israël komen en een intrekking van alle  financiering en steun. Het internationaal humanitair recht moet worden afgedwongen en elke inbreuk daarop moet worden benoemd en gevolg krijgen.

Ik hoop dat u uw invloed zult gebruiken om diplomatieke inspanningen te stimuleren die deze genocide een halt toeroepen en de eerdervernoemde eisen inwilligen.

Sujet : Nous exigeons un cessez-le-feu immédiat et permanent!

Cher,

Je vous écris en tant que citoyen belge préoccupé et engagé. Je voudrais demander votre attention et votre soutien immédiats pour arrêter le génocide en cours en Palestine. Les souffrances du peuple palestinien augmentent de jour en jour.

Tout d'abord, je vous demande d'utiliser votre influence pour exiger d'Israël la levée du blocus de Gaza, afin de permettre une livraison immédiate d'aide humanitaire et un accès à l'électricité. Il est impératif que les citoyens innocents aient accès à des besoins essentiels tels que la nourriture, l'eau potable et les fournitures médicales.

De plus, je vous exhorte à plaider en faveur de l'arrêt de l'utilisation d'armes au phosphore blanc par les forces armées israéliennes. L'utilisation de phosphore blanc comme arme incendiaire dans des zones peuplées de civils est interdite en vertu de la Convention sur certaines armes classiques des Nations Unies, comme souligné par Human Rights Watch. L'utilisation de telles armes à effet non discriminant est non seulement contraire au droit international, mais entraîne également des dommages graves aux civils.

En outre, je demande également un embargo militaire. Le commerce des armes entre la Belgique et Israël doit cesser. Le traité des Nations Unies sur le commerce des armes stipule que le transit d'armes est interdit vers les pays où il existe un risque élevé que le matériel soit utilisé pour commettre des génocides, des crimes contre l'humanité ou des crimes de guerre.

En résumé, je ne veux rien de moins qu'un appel immédiat et clair à un cessez-le-feu permanent et à une levée immédiate du blocus de Gaza. Il doit y avoir un embargo militaire avec Israël et un retrait de tous les financements et soutiens. Le droit humanitaire international doit être appliqué et toute violation de ce droit doit être nommée et poursuivie.

J'espère que vous userez de votre influence pour encourager les efforts diplomatiques visant à mettre fin à ce génocide et à répondre aux demandes susmentionnées.

4. Open letter to the media

Ik mail u naar aanleiding van de berichtgeving die jullie voeren over Palestina, die tot nu toe bijzonder eenzijdig is.

Terwijl Israël een genocide pleegt – zoals bevestigd door verscheidene mensenrechtennexperts- en organisaties, en geuit door het IDF zelf - en de éne na de andere oorlogsmisdaad pleegt (door scholen te bombarderen, residentiële gebouwen, ziekenhuizen, kerken, medisch en journalistiek personeel, etc.), wordt hierover ofwel niet gerapporteerd, ofwel enkel in een framing die de schuld onverkort legt bij Hamas, en waarbij desinformatie (bv bij de aanslag op het Anglicaans ziekenhuis, de onthoofde baby’s, de aanrandingen) klakkeloos wordt overgenomen. De grondoorzaak, met name de historische en in internationaal recht erkende context van apartheid en bezetting, blijft onbenoemd.

Ook het gebruik van neutrale taal draagt bij tot de dehumanisering van Palestijnse slachtoffers: Palestijnen ‘verlaten’ Gaza niet, ze worden verdreven. Ze ‘overlijden’ niet, ze worden etnisch gezuiverd en vermoord. Er ‘valt’ geen raket uit het niets op een ziekenhuis, het wordt doelbewust gebombardeerd. Dit is geen ‘conflict’ of ‘oorlog’, maar - als dusdanig benoemd door talloze (o.a. VN) mensenrechtenexperts & -organisaties - genocide.

Deze eenzijdige berichtgeving voedt het dominante narratief waarin Israël (de bezettende, onderdrukkende macht) wordt gevictimiseerd, en wordt voorgesteld alsof het slechts zou handelen als reactie of vergelding op Hamas, terwijl het in werkelijkheid al meer dan 75 jaar een beleid voert van onderdrukking, onteigening, en etnische zuivering, die nu een ongeziene intensifiëring aanneemt, waarbij het internationaal recht van de mensenrechten en het internationaal humanitair recht flagrant worden geschonden.

Journalisten zijn er volgens het Europees Hof van de Rechten van de Mens om als ‘watchdogs of society’ te opereren. Dit soort berichtgeving doet precies het omgekeerde: ze geeft een vrijbrief aan de genocide, misleidt de publieke opinie, en doet islamofobie en andere vormen van haat verder oplaaien, met dodelijke gevolgen (zoals laatst de hate crime op een Palestijns-Amerikaanse jongen in Plainfield, Illinois).

Ik, kennissen en vrienden proberen het deficit van de media op te vangen door de berichtgeving van de weinige journalisten die in Gaza nog niet zijn vermoord online op te volgen, alsook van journalistieke organisaties zoals IMEU, Eye on Palestine, etc. (ik kan desgevallend een lijst via social media bezorgen). Dit zijn bronnen die voor iedereen toegankelijk zijn, en die bij uitstek door jullie journalisten moeten worden gevolgd.

Media en journalisten wereldwijd zijn mede verantwoordelijk voor de genocide zolang ze geen neutrale, objectieve berichtgeving voeren.

Met grote urgentie vraag ik jullie om diligenter te zijn in jullie verslaggeving, de journalistieke code en deontologie te eerbiedigen, en het eenzijdige narratief rond de bezetting en de genocide te doorbreken.

Je me permets de vous contacter concernant la couverture que vous faites de la situation en Palestine, qui est jusqu’à présent particulièrement unilatérale.

Alors qu’Israël commet un génocide – tel que confirmé par plusieurs experts et organisations des droits de l’homme, et exprimé par l’IDF elle-même – et commet un crime de guerre après l’autre (en bombardant des écoles, des immeubles résidentiels, des hôpitaux, des églises, du personnel médical, des journalistes etc.) il n’en est pas ou peu fait mention, ou alors dans un cadre qui pose l’entière responsabilité sur le Hamas, et où la désinformation (par exemple l’attaque sur l’hôpital Anglican, les bébés décapités, les attouchements) est reprise quasi telle quelle. La cause fondamentale, c’est-à-dire le contexte historique et internationalement reconnu d’apartheid et d’occupation, reste tue. L’utilisation d’un langage neutre conduit aussi à la déshumanisation des victimes palestiniennes : les Palestiniens ne « quittent » pas Gaza, ils en sont chassés. Ils ne « décèdent » pas, ils ont assassinés. Les roquettes ne « tombent » pas de nulle part sur un hôpital, celui-ci est sciemment bombardé. Il ne s’agit pas d’un « conflit » ou d’une « guerre » mais – tel que nommé par de nombreux experts (e.a. l’ONU) et organisations des droits de l’homme – d’un génocide.

Cette communication unilatérale nourrit le narratif dominant où Israël (l’occupant, la puissance oppressive) est victimisé, et n’agirait qu’en réaction ou en représailles au Hamas, alors qu’en réalité il mène depuis plus de 75 ans une politique d’oppression, d’appropriation et d’épuration ethnique, qui prend à présent des proportions démesurées, où le droit international et humanitaire est bafoué de manière flagrante.

Les journalistes sont là pour endosser le rôle de « watchdogs of society » selon la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme. Ce type de communication fait exactement le contraire : elle ouvre la voie au génocide, trompe l’opinion publique, attise l’islamophobie et d’autres types de haines, avec des conséquences dramatiques (comme le dernier « hate crime » sur un garçon palestino-américain à Plainfield, Illinois).

J’essaie, avec des connaissances et amis, de combler ce manquement des médias en suivant en ligne la communication des quelques rares journalistes qui n’ont pas encore été assassinés à Gaza, ou celles des organisations journalistiques telles que IMEU, Eye on Palestine etc. (je peux si nécessaire fournir une liste de média sociaux). Ces sources sont accessibles pour tout le monde, et doivent en particulier être suivies par vous, les journalistes. Les médias et journalistes au niveau mondial sont coresponsables de ce génocide tant qu’ils n’adoptent pas un point de vue partial et objectif dans leur communication.

Avec un grand sentiment d’urgence je vous demande de veiller plus attentivement à votre communication, au code et à la déontologie journalistique, et à cesser ce narratif unilatéral autour du génocide.

7. Buy an e-sim for a Gazan and provide internet/phone access

The infrastructure needed to access the Internet in Gaza has been destroyed by bombing and the ‘Israeli’ government has blocked access.

eSIMs are virtual SIM cards which allow people to connect to the outside world, to communicate with their families, show what’s happening in Gaza and to get an education.

Over 300,000 eSIMs have been donated, with many people able to connect through one eSIM.

• Palestine Children’s Relief Fund is the primary humanitarian organisation in Palestine. They deliver crucial, life-saving medical relief and humanitarian aid on the ground.

• Medical Aid for Palestinians is on the ground in Gaza where they’re working to stock hospitals.

• Doctors Without Borders is donating medical supplies to hospitals and health facilities in Gaza.
  
• Anera is responding to the large humanitarian need in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem by delivering health/hygiene kits and food.

• The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is a relief and human development agency providing medical support, trauma relief and food assistance on the ground in Gaza.

10. BDS (boycott)

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) is a Palestinian-led movement for freedom, justice and equality. The first simple step that people can take is to boycott products of companies that are complicit in Israel's violations of Palestinian rights.It’s not always easy to avoid these brands, but informing yourself and getting active is key. There are a few key brands to avoid (targeted boycotting always works better than random boycotting): Pepsi Co, Lays, Starbucks, HP, Puma, Coca-Cola, Capri Sun…

@boycot.israelische.producten also gives an overview of which products to avoid and in which way they have been complicit (in Dutch).

🔍Look on the packaging for specific brands or manufacturers you want to avoid. For example, Nestlé, Unilever, etc.

By focusing your attention on product labels and specific brands, you can more effectively decide which products are linked to Israel. So we pay attention to the 3 pillars: country code, "made in Israel" label and brand/producer. With those 3, we cover everything!

Apps: you can download Buycott (€1,99) & Boycott (free) on IOS & some Android systems. These apps make it very easy to scan barcodes in store & to see where it was made/produced + it sometimes also gives the history of a product.

12. Raise awareness (social media tips)

It’s important to keep the conversation going about Palestine and to show what’s happening!

• Use reliable sources (e.g. the ones listed above).
  
• To avoid a shadowban, you can:

1. Insert random pictures or videos in between your Palestine content.
2. Add stickers, polls, emoji’s, music, filters... to your stories.
3. Interact with each other’s posts/stories (comment, like, save, interact with polls...).
4. Be creative when you write words such as P@les t*ne, Gen0c*de, G@ z@ .
5. Use viral hashtags (you can hide them in your stories).

• A lot of propaganda and false information is circulating. Make sure you fact-check.

• @DecolonizePalestine is an independent, self-funded educational project founded by two Palestinians living in Ramallah. Their website provides an introduction to Palestine, reading lists and more.

17. Join the Apartheid-Free-Zone campagne

The AVZ-campagne (website in Dutch) is in an initiative by Palestina Solidariteit vzw and Association Belgo Palestinienne.

By participating in the anti-apartheid campaign, public places can endorse the demand for justice and equality for the Palestinian people. At the same time, public places make a commitment to become places of integrity by ensuring that their operation does not support oppression in any way.

The AVZ campaign stands for active solidarity with the Palestinian people, and in the same line with all oppressed peoples worldwide fighting for justice.

OIP Landsystems (a Belgium based company) is owned by Elbit, an Israeli military company. Elbit is Israel's largest weapons manufacturer. Its weapons are routinely used in war crimes against Palestinian civilians and its surveillance systems are used in Palestine and along the U.S.–Mexico border.

Concrete action: on Instagram, repost this video with the hashtag #shutdownelbit to make everyone aware, and secondly to gain attention to Belgium’s complicity.

European banks (and other banks worldwide) are investing billions into companies in occupied Palestinian territory. Not only do they invest in it, most unethical banks also often don’t screen people or don’t really ask for what money on accounts is used for. The finances can be used to fund terrorism, exploit people in shady businesses, or run projects that are not eco-friendly.

Pressure where pressure is due: It’s high time for the banks to take responsibility! Geachte,

Gezien uw functie vertrouwen wij erop dat u op de hoogte bent dat op 26 januari een schip van het Israëlische ZIM Integrated Shipping de Antwerpse haven zal binnen varen. Over ZIM is publiekelijk bekend dat deze rederij militair materiaal transporteert naar Israël, ook is het door de Belgische autoriteiten geweten dat ZIM afgelopen jaar 39 keer Antwerpen binnenvoer waarvan bij zeker 8 van deze schepen militair materiaal aan boord was. Het gaat in totaal om minstens 246 ton munitie en 20 ton aan ontstekers. Afgezien van doorvoer zijn er ook feiten van export gekend, in februari vertrok een ZIM-schip richting Israel met 32 ton buskruit, afkomstig uit een Belgische fabriek. Hoewel Vlaanderen sinds 2006 een strikte beleidslijn heeft tegenover Israël (een verbod op uitvoer of doorvoer die neerkomt op “de versterking van de militaire capaciteit van de Israëlische krijgsmacht”), werd deze in het geval van het bedrijf ZIM genegeerd of omzeild. Door het toelaten van ZIM schepen in de Antwerpse haven gaat Vlaanderen in tegen de eigen beleidslijn en overtreedt het ook het Wapenhandelsverdrag.

Aangezien wij er niet vanuit kunnen gaan dat het schip dat 26 januari in Antwerpen aanmeert geen militair materiaal vervoert en de rederij al meermaals de wet aan haar laars lapte, eisen wij dat Vlaanderen de toegang voor deze schepen verbiedt. Wij vragen aan de autoriteiten om hun plicht te vervullen, hun verantwoordelijkheid op te nemen en alles in hun bevoegdheid en macht te doen om deze schending van de wet tegen te houden. We concluderen dat een totaal wapenembargo tegen Israël de enige valide optie is. Daarbij waarschuwen wij ook dat, indien de Antwerpse, Vlaamse en Belgische autoriteiten hun werk niet naar behoren uitvoeren, wij als geëngageerde en bezorgde burgers dit werk op ons zullen moeten nemen. Er werden reeds verschillende klachten ingediend tegen het bedrijf ZIM voor hun misdaden tegen de mensheid maar het tempo van de juridische macht en de urgentie van de situatie in Gaza verplichten ons beroep te doen op andere middelen.

Samenvattend: Wij vragen u vriendelijk, doch dringend, uw verantwoordelijkheid te nemen en ervoor te zorgen dat deze schepen Antwerpen niet binnenvaren, anders zullen wij genoodzaakt zijn in uw plaats actie te ondernemen.

23. BOYCOT EUROVISION/ISRAELS PARTICIPATION

Israel just announced their song ‘October Rain’, which is an undeniable reference to Ocotber 7th. So please speak out about the hypocrisy of this decision in light of Eurovisions past exclusion of Russia. First of all, Why is ISRAEL even a participant in the Eurovision Song Contest competition. Second of all, nobody wants to see, hear or have anything to do with Israel as the state is a violator of so many human rights during its genocide in Gaza! Israel is committing serious war crimes on a daily basis in Gaza & the West Bank towards Palestinians. And as of January 2024 Israel are currently in court (ICJ) for committing genocide!
