AUSD’s Superintendent Search: What You Need to Know

Atascadero Unified School District (AUSD) is in the process of hiring a new superintendent—but the search has lacked transparency and meaningful stakeholder involvement. Here’s what has happened so far:

  • In early September, Superintendent Tom Butler announced his retirement.
  • The district solicited a proposal from Leadership Associates, a search firm that handles 65% of superintendent searches in California. At the October 15, 2024, board meeting, the firm presented its services, quoting a cost of $25,000.
  • After discussion, the board hired Leadership Associates for $25,000 to conduct a nationwide search. The board could have chosen the San Luis Obispo County Office of Education to conduct the search for about $6,000.
  • In early December, the district surveyed stakeholders about the qualities they wanted in a new superintendent. This input was used to create a job description.
  • Since then, the district has provided no updates to teachers, parents, or community members about the hiring process.

Concerned about this lack of communication, teachers, parents, and union representatives (ADTA and CSEA) have repeatedly spoken at board meetings, raising concerns about both the selection process and EJ Rossi as a candidate.

In response, the board requested input on Rossi’s candidacy, and a survey was conducted. Within 48 hours, 100 responses were collected: 80 teachers opposed Rossi’s appointment, 16 were undecided, and only 4 were in favor.

Yet, despite overwhelming opposition and ongoing concerns about potential retaliation against those who speak out, the board has now moved to finalize Rossi’s appointment.

As of Friday, March 14, the agenda for the Tuesday, March 18, school board meeting includes Item 12.1.1—recommending the approval of EJ Rossi as superintendent, effective July 1, 2025.

Why Your Voice Matters

The board assumes parents are not paying attention and believes opposition to Rossi comes from only a small group of outspoken teachers—despite clear evidence to the contrary.

This is a critical moment. We urge all stakeholders—parents, teachers, and staff—to attend the board meeting on Tuesday, March 18, and demand transparency and accountability.

Join us at 6:30 PM outside the District Office on Tuesday, March 18.
