A Moment of BAN

“Rebellion without truth is like spring in a bleak, arid desert.”

- Khalil Gibran

In the Beginning

Tractate Bikkurim 3:1

How does one set aside firstfruits?

If one goes down to his field and sees a ripening fig or a ripening cluster of grapes, or a ripening pomegranate, he ties a reed rope around it and says:

Let these be firstfruits [though they are still attached and not yet fully ripe.

This is deduced from the verse which states: “And now behold I have brought the first of the fruit” (Deuteronomy 26:10)

Time to Smile

Kid: “Ruthless.”

Biblical News - Hello from the Hashmonites...

A cache of silver coins was discovered during salvage excavations at a 2,100-year-old agricultural estate in Israel in southern Israel’s Kiryat Gat region. The coins had been placed in a crevice against a wall of the estate. Olive presses and wine presses suggest that the family grew olive trees and vineyards. Ritual baths, vessels made of chalk, and bronze coins minted by Hasmonean kings were also found.

The 16 silver coins include one or two tetradrachms or didrachms minted in the city of Tyre from every year between 135 and 126 B.C... Hiding places connected by tunnels to cisterns and storage pits were found under the floors of the house. An opening in a ritual bath led to a hiding place that contained artifacts that date to the Bar Kokhba rebellion, which occurred in A.D. 132.

Daf Bite  –

The Mishna lists four basic types of nezek (damage) for which a person will be required to pay restitution. The Gemara on daf (page) 4b quotes baraitot that expand the number of types of nezek by including examples that fit into the broader categories presented by the Mishna. Rabbi Oshaya enumerates 13 types of avot nezikin (including, for example, people who borrow objects or are given things to watch and then do not return them or allow them to get lost or stolen); Rabbi Hiyya finds 24 avot nezikin (including, for example, robbers and thieves).

Another category included by Rabbi Hiyya is examples of hezek she-eino nikkar - damage that was done that cannot be seen. The examples are cases where someone made someone else's tithes tameh (ritually defiled) or mixes tithes in with regular produce, or libates his wine to an idol. In all of these situations, although there is no apparent change in the object itself, it no longer can be used and therefore has no value. In such cases, if the person did the damage on purpose he will be held responsible, but if it was accidental he will not have to pay.

 טִרְדוֹנִי - tirdoni :); and instead of אוֹבְּסֶסְיָה say טֵרָדוֹן - teradon:)

On the Parasha & Beyond…

B’midbar - Praising the Excluded

ואתה הפקד את הלוים על משכן העדת "And you shall appoint the Lewiyim [Levites] to be in charge of the Tabernacle of Testimony" (BaMidbar 1:50). Moshe Rabbenu, 'a"h, had previously been told not to count the Levites in the census for the army.

According to the Midrash (Bereshith Rabba, 1:12), anyone who sacrifices himself a little (by bringing himself closer to G-d), will be brought a lot closer. At the time of the incident of the Golden Calf, when Moshe Rabbenu, 'a"h, said, "Whoever is on G-d's side, come to me", the Levites all went to him. For this G-d rewarded them that they alone would be in charge of His house.

(Rabbi Ya'aqob Menashe / ATorahMinute)

Parasha: B’midbar - B’midbar (Numbers) 1:1-4:20

Historical Context: Bnei Israel's 40-year journey continues. Midbar Sinai (Sinai Desert) at Ohel Moed (Tent of Meeting). Creation Time: 2449 (1475 bce) on the first day of the second month, in the second year after the departure from Mitsrayim.

Parashort: In the Sinai Desert G-d says to conduct a census of the twelve tribes of Israel. Moshe counts 603,550 men of  age 20 to 60 years; the tribe of Levi, numbering 22,300 males age one month and older, is counted separately. Beyond the Levite circle, the twelve tribes camped in four groups of three tribes each. This formation was kept also while traveling. Each tribe had its own Nassi (leader), and its own flag with its tribal color and emblem.

Haftara: B’midbar - Hoshea (Hosea) 2:1-22

Haftit: The Prophet Hosea predicts that in the future Messianic period, the Jewish people will enjoy Hashem’s blessing of growth, unity, and redemption. The Haftara begins with a promise that there will be so many Israelites that you won’t be able to count them. A gathering of the exiles will occur. The Haftarah ends with the promise that Hashem will take Israel for himself in love, righteousness and faith for all time.

Connection to the Parasha: In the Haftarah, the prophet Hosea predicts that the population of Israel will grow like the sands of the ocean. In the Parsha, torah reading, we hear about the many Jews that traveled in the Sinai Desert to the Holy Land. So the connection is that both Haftarah’s and Parsha’s usage of the word sand, and it’s being uncountable. (haftorahman.com)
