Trip 2

Mileage

  1. Bike Shop

Destination:  Downtube Bicycle Works

What I learned/observation:  26F is a new personal low temperature riding record.  The balaclava and headgear covered all but the area around my eyes.  At speed, the cold wind “bit” the exposed skin!  This was my first ride on snow/slush covered streets.

Destination: Downtube Bicycle Works

What I learned/observation:   Clammy mittens and balaclava are not so warm!  Need to carry spares for these longer rides with breaks.  Buy at least one additional pair of glove liners.

  1. Breakfast or Lunch

Destination:  Liza’s house for breakfast

What I learned/observation:  23F replaces yesterday’s personal low temp cycling record.  Donned my new Terry winter tights…nice warmth and just enough wind resistance.  The PDW rear blinky seemed anemic after sitting in the cold.

  1. Coffee or Dessert

Destination: Ultraviolet Café (DARK)

What I learned/observation:  I just wore my normal winter jacket which was fine for such a short hop.

Lighting:  Cygolite Mitycross 400, Planet Bike Blinky “3H” with self-leveling helmet mount, PDW “Danger Zone” tail light, Planet Bike rack mount tail light.

  1. Dinner

Destination: Val’s house (Return ride DARK)

What I learned/observation:  I strapped a moderately large toaster/convection oven onto the rear rack using bungee cords and a bungee net.  Although the load stayed on the rack during the ride, it listed dramatically to one side.  I need a different approach for hauling large objects!

  1. Grocery Store

Destination:  Honest Weight Food Coop

What I learned/observation:  The splatter pattern of slush from my front wheel on the front part of my drivetrain tells me I need to add a mud flap.  I also need to streamline my post-shopping bike-side routine when it’s cold like this.  (loading panniers, re-mounting lights, unlocking the bike, etc.)

Destination: Honest Weight Food Coop

What I learned/observation: The PDW rear blinky seems to be working much better in the cold with fresh batteries!

  1. Any store that is not the grocery store

Destination: Sheila’s Wines & Liquors (DARK)

What I learned/observation: The flash photo I took before the ride showed me that my bike gear is more reflective than I realized!  Two bottles of wine fit well in the Topeak pannier.

Lighting:  Cygolite Mitycross 400, Planet Bike Blinky “3H” with self-leveling helmet mount, PDW “Danger Zone” blinking tail light, Planet Bike rack mount tail light.

  1. Library (also includes book reading)

Destination: Albany Public Library, Main Branch

What I learned/observation:  17F with 3F wind chill – latest personal record.  Full neoprene mask paired with Ski goggles kept my face warm.  My glasses fogged up when I stopped, the goggles did not.  I was able to finish my ride without glasses.  The goggles didn’t interfere noticeably with my range of vision.  They worked well with my EVT Safe Zone Helmet Mirror.  I was comfortable enough to take a long way home.

  1. Work

Destination:  SI Group (Bike/Bus/Bike) (morning trip DARK)

What I learned/observation:  Left bags attached to bike…easier than lugging them onto the bus.  Evening ride to bus stop was into a stiff headwind.  Feet started feeling cold.  Add an extra layer in boots next time.

Lighting:  Cygolite Mitycross 400 Headlight, Planet Bike Blinky “3H” with self-leveling helmet mount, PDW “Danger Zone” blinking tail light, Planet Bike rack-mounted tail light.  Spare Headlight:  Magic Shine MJ-808E (not needed).

  1. Wild Card

Destination:  Carmen’s house to deliver late Xmas gifts to her older boys

What I learned/observation:  Gabriel (age 4) does NOT like quick visits, especially when the visitor brings fun bike gadgets into the house!  Adding Peeps bunnies to the late Xmas packages was a hit.  (Christmas with a nod to Easter)

Miles: see Errand 6-Trip 2    Date: Feb 16, 2013

Destination:  Val’s house - to accompany her (by car) to a doctor’s appointment and to serve as her driver for the trip home.

What I learned/observation:  My hands were still warm from my morning ride!  Rode over in my down parka and was overheating by the time I arrived.  Was glad I had a better option packed in the trunk pannier for the return home.
