Black to the Land Coalition is a 501c3 Nonprofit incorporated in 2020 with a mission to enrich the lives of Black, brown and indigenous people through outdoor recreation and nature-based educational activities.
Our events include but are not limited to hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, kayaking, foraging, farming, and cultural traditions rooted in nature. Beyond recreation, Black to the Land is committed to cultivating leaders and critical thinkers through deep and lasting connections to the natural world.
Role Overview
The Treasurer is the financial steward of Black to the Land Coalition, responsible for maintaining budgets, expenditures, revenues and the overall accountability in all fiscal matters. This role ensures the organization’s financial health by managing funds, maintaining accurate records, preparing reports, and advising the board on financial decisions.
We’re looking for someone who not only brings technical expertise in nonprofit finance, but also has the energy and persistence to “herd cats” as we grow our financial infrastructure. This is a hands-on role that combines leadership, attention to detail, and seeing tasks to completion. Bonus if you have a love for community and the outdoors.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate financial records using QuickBooks and other financial tools.
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, including invoicing.
- Prepare and present financial reports at every board meeting (which happen 4x annually).
- Develop and oversee organizational budgets in collaboration with the board.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial best practices and legal requirements.
- Support the development of sustainable financial systems and processes.
- Provide clear, transparent financial information to board members and funders.
- Work closely with the Fundraising Chair and Executive Committee to align finances with fundraising and program goals.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of nonprofit finance, bookkeeping, and financial reporting.
- Someone who comes highly recommended by our beloved Detroit community.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks and invoicing.
- Strong organizational and communication skills; able to manage multiple priorities.
- Outgoing, persistent, and gregarious personality, comfortable with follow-up and building systems from the ground up.
- Ability to translate financial data into accessible information for board and community members.
- Passion for outdoor recreation, environmental justice, and supporting others in connecting with nature.
Time Commitment Board positions are volunteer based, the expectations are as follows:
- Attend quarterly board meetings (2-4 hours each).
- Attend monthly finance committee meetings (1-2 hrs each)
- Dedicate 4–6 additional hours per month to financial management and reporting.
- Be available for periodic check-ins with the Executive Committee as needed.
