Attention All UW Law Students! Unique Pro Bono Project Opportunity to Work on Sex Offender Removal Cases. App Due March 8

Position: Law Student Volunteer, TeamChild

Open to: All UW law students

Time Commitment: Volunteers are expected to dedicate approximately 4 hours/week to the position and will have the option to negotiate a remote work arrangement.

Duration: March 27, 2017 is a tentative start date. Volunteers are expected to complete their work within 8 to 10 weeks.

Description of Activity: In partnership with the UW Chapter of Street Youth Legal Advocates of Washington (SYLAW), TeamChild seeks four law student volunteers to work directly with its staff attorneys on sex offender registration removal cases. The volunteers’ work will involve legal research, managing discovery and records, and drafting pleadings.


Description of Organization: TeamChild is a nationally recognized non-profit legal aid agency serving vulnerable youth across Washington State. The mission of TeamChild is to uphold the rights of youth involved, or at risk of involvement, in the juvenile justice system to help them secure the education, healthcare, housing, and other support they need to achieve positive outcomes in their lives.


Recommended Skills/Prerequisites: Demonstrated commitment to juvenile justice issues.

Type of Supervision and Training: Volunteers will be assigned to a TeamChild staff attorney who will provide direct supervision. Volunteers must attend a 1.5-hour orientation at the TeamChild/Seattle office.

Benefits/Compensation: TeamChild will provide training, mentoring, and experience, but no monetary compensation is available. These volunteer positions offer students a unique and rare opportunity to gain real world experience working with advocates who are subject matter experts in juvenile justice issues. Volunteers may also walk away from the experience with a legal writing sample.
