LatePass Guide for Instructors

  1. LatePasses allow students to extend the due date on a past due assignment by themselves, without having to reach out to the Instructor for an extension. To automatically give students LatePasses upon enrollment, from the course homepage (which is the first page you see when you click on a course name), click Course Settings:

...expand the
Additional Options folder. Enter how many LatePasses you want students to get when they enroll in the course, and enter how many hours you would like the LatePass to extend the due date. Click Submit at the bottom to save:

  1. You can always give more LatePasses, or change how many hours a LatePass extends the due date in the Roster, by clicking Manage LatePasses:

  1. By default, all of our assignments are set up to allow Unlimited use of LatePasses on every assignment. If desired, you can make a change to this setting by going into the settings for a particular assignment:

...in the
Time Limit and Access Control folder, you can turn off the use of a LatePasse on a particular assignment, or limit the number of LatePasses that can be used, or restrict the use of LatePasses by a certain date:

  1. If you want to set a penalty for work done while using a LatePass, you can do that in the Settings by expanding the Grading and Feedback folder, and setting the penalty in the appropriate box:

  1. Students would simply click UseLatePass to use a LatePass on a past due assignment, it would look like this to the student:

Students would then see this screen, explaining how long the LatePass extends the due date by, and how many LatePasses will be needed. Students click the Yes, Redeem LatePass(es) button.Image showing the Redeem LatePass screen where students must confirm that they want to Redeem LatePass.

...and the assignment then moves on the calendar accordingly, based on how much the LatePass extended the due date. For example, in this example, 2.1 was due on 8/30/24, I used 1 LatePass to extend it 48 hours, so now 2.1 is 48 hours later on the calendar, on 9/1/24.

  1. If a student goes into Review Mode / Practice mode, they will no longer be able to use a LatePass. For past due assignments, if students don’t click on Use LatePass, and instead click on the past due assignment name, they will see this warning screen that explains if they click the button labeled Practice, they can no longer use a LatePass. They can still use a LatePass on this screen by clicking on Redeem LatePass (in this specific example, it is Redeem 4 LatePasses).

In the event that a student goes into Practice mode by clicking the Practice button, they would see another warning:

  1. If the student continues into Practice mode, then later wants the ability to use their LatePass again, you as an Instructor can clear the blocking of the LatePass in the gradebook. Click on Gradebook, then the assignment in question:

…and click Clear Block:
