Excellent proof of concept happening this week.  We created realtime documentation on Dozuki for the OSE Lasersaur Laser Cutter build in Austria.

http://opensourceecology.dozuki.com/c/OSE_Lasersaur_Frame_Development_Board

As Marcin built the machine he took photos of each step and posted them on Trovebox., out photo sharing site. At the same time he also put a text explanation of the steps in a spreadsheet on Google docs.

Then back here  in the US we took all that info and created the How-to guides on Dozuki.  Essentially in realtime we now have How-to guides posted.

This is not blog worthy: Plumbing pipes are being dug out - but the rain is making it difficult.

We did some infrastructure improvements despite the rain. The stove has been reworked and replaced and one of the exterior rooms has been partially cleaned out.

Sad to see Dan Benamy depart, but he will most likely return. Great contributor.

This week - Marcin is in Austria! Chris is preparing to trench to the microhouse. This will allow us to run water, electric and internet.

The Feast information here.

Marcin and Dan Benamy continue to work the backhoe.

Infrastructure Improvements by Mark Applegarth who is an amazing handyman OSE sourced from Maysville, MO.

1) Removed rotting wood from undersink, replaced and painted with mold resistant paint - also replaced water filters

2) Painted and re-screened front doors - also installed them correctly (they were backwards, ha)

3) Installed the OSE Dishwasher!

4) The stove is out for repairs (in the workshop), welding done by Cody Harrison (one of our great DPVs).

This weekend, Gary (Maysville Local) stopped by to asses whether he might be able to clear the weeds at FeF. This would be exciting - ongoing coordination to complete this task.

Also, Alan Reed, a Cameron plumber came by to asses OSE’s plumbing situation - we hope to fix the drain issue in the kitchen, which would contribute greatly to the HabLab’s comfy factor.

Chris R. is back, completing the microhouse. Mark Applegarth, Dan Benamy, Cody Harrison and Rob Kirk have worked all weekend on the house. The siding looks amazing.

I am working with Shirley on our taxes, which appear to be relatively painless thanks to Aaron Makaruk’s organizational expertise and accountability wrt to 2012’s bookkeeping. I will update once complete.

Focus shifted to design and prototyping work as DPVs tackled the Backhoe Pivot dilemma. Using laser cut cardboard pieces, the team was able to construct and test scaled versions of  multiple possible solutions. This rapid prototyping capability is a key feature that is being integrated into our rapid engineering product design process. Link to pictures and video on wiki.

Microhouse update: Microhouse construction is still underway. The roof will be completed on Thursday. Architect Chris Reinhart will be returning on October 17th to continue the build.

Became a Hammerspace member and utilized their Laser Cutter to make scaled paper tubing and plates for future rapid prototyping efforts. OSE was able to use scaled modeling to overcome design concerns for the Backhoe prototype. Scaled models can also be used to develop more efficient work instructions that will decrease fabrication and prototyping time.

  • People who arrived late last week and into this week for the Microhouse build - John Motloch, Seth Jenkins, Chris Reinhart, Thomas Devick (helping with the build and proving to be a wonderful cook - going above and beyond feeding everyone), Noah Devick, Rob Beddingfield, James Wise, Catherine Austin Fitts, Cody Harrison, Dan Benamy (arrived today)
  • People who have been here - Lucas Warner and Emmett McGregor
  • 501(3)(c) - OSE got approved - we had been operating under an umbrella organization and finally received our IRS Determination Letter - special thanks to Aaron Makaruk who helped facilitate the original application submission
  • Lucas Warner leaves us this week (Oct 3). He has become the cornerstone to all operations that run smoothly. For this microhouse build he was key to getting LifeTrac 6 completed and has spent the past couple of days using LifeTrac 6 and the Soil Pulverizer to pulverize soil that he then expertly lifts up (using LifeTrac 6) and dumps into the Compressed Earth Brick press.
  • Special thanks to James Slade - he was at OSE a couple weeks ago working on the CEB press and his efforts have paid off big time. The CEB is working great - everyone is impressed with how the bricks hold up - you can lift them directly off the line and place them into one of the microhouse walls.

Spent last week figuring out Microhouse bed logistics, sourcing bolts for LifeTrac 6 and then making due with the bolts we had on hand.

FeF also received two truckloads of gravel last week - amidst LifeTrac 6 building.

Marcin will have more information, but Microhouse gravel arrived Sept 23 and I am sourcing a concrete pourer for Sept 24. Otherwise, Marcin is compressing bricks (approx. 1500) incase it rains on Sept 28th.

Tractor is together and tested well this morning! Needs some minor adjustments and some finishing touches as far and welding some pins in place and organizing the hydraulics. Lift height is almost 10 feet, dump height looks really good from what we can tell, turns very easily, brakes work ... etc etc etc! Overall it looks great, performs well (so far), looks MUCH more polished than LT5, smaller footprint overall, seems to be a great success.

Thanks for the support these last two weeks couldn't have done it without the team effort!

Special thanks of course to Lucas, Rob and Emmett. Many, MANY nights of 1-3 am, 16+ hours days non stop! Not bad for having an average of 2.5 people through the build. A little less than 7 days total for less than 3 people is pretty darn good! Special thanks to Marcin for knocking out the Hydraulic schematic and the wheel mounts. Thanks to Audrey and Katie for the bolt replacement and the hydraulics!!

Had everything been put together prior to the build, we are fairly confident that we could hit the assemble in a day milestone....... in the future of course....

Many thanks, great job everyone!!

LifeTrac 6

Highlights from LifeTrac 6:

If you would like some highlights of the Tractor Build, here are some points from my notes:

1)  Parts -- We were able to overcome obstacles we had encountered in the past of obtaining our steel order after precision machining the parts on time. We were also able to outsource transportation from the machinist, which proved to save both manpower and reduce costs.

2) We worked with our supplier to define our requirements; the precision machining of the steel was cut to our specifications -- we had not problems with hole alignments, which increased the speed of the build.

3) We were able to leverage best practices from LifeTrac 5's build: we used the Phoenix Method to create work instructions (named after Summer 2013 DPV Jordan Phoenix). Other best practices include developing a cut list that optimized steel lengths, thereby reducing waste, creating a parts warehouse organized by modules and dedicated space for construction.

4) We had a Documentation DPV, Emmett McGregor, (who also helped with the build). Having two documenters facilitated a dedicated documentation effort. We hope to produce improved video instructionals from this effort.

OSE Grounds Improvement -- In 2013, OSE laid a gravel foundation as part of an infrastructure improvement initiative. These roads and pathways will not only improve the quality of life for volunteers and staff, but will improve logistics operations for parts delivery, prototyping capabilities and access to parts storage.

Microhouse progress -- Prep work is completed for the pouring of the foundation.

Hi Lisa, On Friday we had some success organizing a steel pick up from Omaha, NE to Maysville, MO on Monday of this week. Previously,Gary and DPVs had to rent a Uhaul to ship the steel themselves. The significance is that despite logistics challenges, OSE is improving. The steel arrived on time.

This week, we are expecting a DPV who will be focusing on documentation. (Emmett Mcgregor)

Also, through John Brushwood of Brother’s Wedding, we were introduced to Jason Fuston, a local machinist who is helping us knock out some final steel cuts. Again, this is a huge logistics improvement to find a machinist located just 8 miles from FeF.

DJ Turner, producer at dj@filamentfeatures.com, should be recognized for picking up the slack in the kitchen four nights in a row. As evening set in, DJ would slip away from the action to prepare dinner for the crew. He knocked out this time consuming task without begrudgery, just determination to keep the crew moving forward. I was thankful and impressed by his nature and ability to make spaghetti impressive using ‘whatever’ he found in our pantries.  Cinnamon is his secret ingredient. MJ Comment - this is lovely - but to me it seems to miss core goals. Is this the type of material we should be reporting? I think this points to a need for a clear Communications/Media Strategy where our branding is crystal clear. - Katie Comment - Yes, absolutely need a media strategy. I do like to give a face to OSE sometimes. It will allow people to engage and identify with us, getting the balance of core goals, personal experiences, technical updates...agree with your point and recommend we find a balance

OSE Executive Staff are foregoing the originally planned retreat (an event focused on team building) to accomplish planning and scheduling this week. In addition, Jordan Phoenix, who is the Founder and Director of Project Free World, provided advice on media strategy, outreach and scalability.

As members of our first “class” of DPVs leave Factor e Farm, the focus has shifted to gaining feedback in order to improve our processes. A Post-DPV survey has been launched and we are seeking feedback to understand what we are doing well and what we can improve upon.

On that note, the Dedicated Project Visits page is being updated and the application process has been streamlined to improve transparency and efficiency.

The Latakoo site is successfully up and running.  We’ve uploaded more than 20 hours of footage shot during the recent 6in60 and Spark builds.  Interviews with Marcin have been transcribed by a feature on the site.  Remote editors have  been accessing  the  material and cutting material for inclusion in our videos.

The first of the edited stories are being completed and will be posted this week.  These are the, “no holds barred” inside accounts of the 6 in 60 build with the good and the bad highlighted in the stories.

Also, the Dozuki documentation site is coming together with excellent graphics, including a detailed infographic on every machine.  (we should feature the one about the CNC Torch table done by our new Lead Graphic Designer, Jean-Baptiste Vervaeck, in Santiago, Chile.

Operations Manager

Last week, The Spark & Tom arrived, followed by James Slade, Jason Smith, Savanna Slade, and Our School at Blair Grocery. The total amounted to 21 people. Highlights from last week were DeRonta Langand’s (from Our School) mastery of the kitchen. He prepared southern style fried chicken, complemented by Tom Griffing’s gumbo.

Durante Chappell (from Our School) showed exceptional expertise during the build, surprising DPV’s and myself with time saving solutions to here and there. He would see someone struggling and quietly offer advice in a very humble, but clear way. It was always Greatly appreciated.

Highlights this week - Lucas Warner, Leandra Forman, Cory Shenky, [Jordan Pheonix (just left yesterday due to a scheduled obligation he had to make, but was working with them up until he had to pack and leave)] are currently pushing through the final milestones needed to finish the tractor. Their resilience is amazing. The timeline for this build is being pushed by externalities that they cannot control. Rather than give up, they are painstakingly working through all the hold ups to completion without a bit of resistance or even a thought to throw in the towel. They are thoughtful and calm...showing the highest levels of professionalism in a time where frankly, some complaining would be acceptable. They don’t complain. Very mature.

All highlights this week are directly attributed to the stamina and character of the people involved in this challenge. I am amazed and while the circumstances are not ones I’d like to repeat...I am grateful to be working with people like these.

Once the Tractor work is finalized, we are lookingforward to some rest. But we also welcome Miguel Castro and John Stager (working on the Hydrafabber) as new DPVs and are saying goodbye to Leandra and Cory.

  • Marcin was able to finish the Ironworker on Wednesday and have a proof of concept cut (AWESOME!)
  • Backhoe was not finished due to some serious issues with getting the pivot to align... great lessons learned though. Also, have the majority of it completed, approx one more full day and it will be operational.
  • Due to the Back Hoe we weren't able to begin the Microtrac. Have suspended the 6 in 60 for the moment to concentrate on making the Spark tractor a great finished product. Will continue at the culmination of the Spark Tractor.

  • Complete Design and build of Spark Tractor

Last week, completed some logistics tasks...sourced a printer! While seemingly small, I have realized that all these little things, not having a working printer or filing system, are huge obstacles to getting anything done. Made huge headway wrt our filing system. The OSE office is nearly organized.

Working to set up as much of an accounting infrastructure as possible before the end of the week. Yesterday we had a great True Fan, Randy, come out to give some pro bono accounting advice. Contributions like this one will save OSE money, but also help encourage and facilitate an environment where ‘do it yourself’ is the ‘go to’ response.

Last week spent a lot of time completing peripheral, but essential, workshop tasks.

Spent a ten hour day picking up 5000 lbs of steel, enjoying St. Jo traffic at the most inopportune time, just prior to picking up the steel and before closing time. Although these are long days, 9AM - 12AM, everyone has been churning out tasks with great attitudes. Working with these interns and DPVs has been phenomenal.

Goal to complete the Backhoe and Ironworker tomorrow and off to pick up more steel, long day in the Uhaul.

Decided upon and procured Project Manager software. While this may seem simple, this decision is the beginning to creating a backbone in OSE’s ability to schedule with proper resource management and allocation.

This week, I am beginning to input all the required information into the PM suite. It will take time to set up, but already we are making headway. ED and I are meeting regularly to discuss the most efficient process of development. Using that process, OSE will be able to effectively and efficiently manage current, local operations, creating a foundation to scale.

I finished my first week at OSE, AND that said, I am really happy with my decision to trek out to wonderful Missouri. The team has been working hard over the past couple of months. It feels good to finally join in. Together, we’ve got it.

Jordan Phoenix, also seen here, has been working hard on prototyping. In his free time he has been working just as hard to bring back our Facebook. If possible, please give him a shout out!

We have also had some more people join us our here at FeF: Caleb Bennett for a DPV and Rob Kirk our Documentation Manager

Last week I finished the drive from DC to MO, found an apartment in St. Joseph, MO and became a Missouri resident!

This week I am getting a sense of current operations and creating a system to develop OSE Protocols. I am also excited to move forward with Open ERP. This program will help OSE manage projects, tasks, and contacts. Overall, my highlights will pertain to organizing, organizing, organizing, which I love!

Last week I secured a groundbreaking new video collaboration system through Latakoo.  This will allow remote video collaborators around the world to help document OSE projects.  I also moved forward with Dozuki to work with their tools to create clear and highly organized “how to” manuals for our machines.
