A Moment of BAN

“A new study shows that new studies

are not to be relied upon.”

In the Beginning

On one Twelve B’Adar (12 of Adar), many years ago, when the Romans ruled the land of Israel, it was discovered that the king's daughter was hurt in the city of Lod. The Romans were sure that one of Lod’s residents was responsible for what happened and decided to inflict punishment on the entire City.

In Lod lived at that time two righteous brothers who decided to save the people of the city. So they went to the Roman minister Toranius, approached him and told him that they hurt the king’s daughter. And so it was, because of their dedication all the inhabitants of Lod were saved. The day declared a happy feast day called “Toranius Day - יום טוריינוס.”

The Talmud tells us that the sages were forced to cancel this feast day, because after many years trouble occurred to the people of Israel on Twelve B’Adar.

(daat.ac.il / talmud: ta’anit 18)

This leap year 5776, Twelve of Adar falls on Sunday, February 21st (Adar Alef) and also on Tuesday March 22nd (Adar Bet)!

Daf Bite  –

The first Mishna in the seventh perek (chapter) of Massekhet Gittin discusses a case where a man who is suffering from a condition called kordeyakos instructs messengers to write a get - writ of divorce - for his wife. The Mishna rules that in such a case theget should not be written.

In the Gemara, Shmuel explains that kordeyakos is a condition that comes from drinking new wine that came directly from the winepress and has not properly fermented. The source of the term kordeyakos is in Latin, where it refers to a heart disease. Nevertheless, in our context it does not mean a physical disease of the heart.  According to both the Sages and the ancient Greeks, the heart was the seat of human intellect.  Therefore, the term heart disease was used to describe mental illness - in this case, temporary insanity. Thus our case is one where the husband cannot think straight because of his condition, which is why we do not take his instructions seriously.

Rav Question –

Will there be animal sacrifices in the Third Temple?

A Story - of a Turkey

A prince once became mad and thought that he was a turkey.  He felt compelled to sit naked under the table, pecking at bones and pieces of bread, like a turkey. All the royal physicians gave up hope of curing him of this madness. The queen and the king grieved tremendously.

A sage arrived and said, “I will undertake to cure him.” The sage undressed and sat naked under the table, next to the prince, picking crumbs and bones like him.

“Who are you?” asked the prince after some time. “What are you doing here?” “And you?” replied the sage. “What are you doing here?”

“I am a turkey,” said the prince.

“I’m also a turkey,” answered the sage.

They sat together like this for some time, until they became good friends. One day, the sage signaled the king’s servants to throw him shirts. He said to the prince, “What makes you think that a turkey can’t wear a shirt? You can wear a shirt and still be a turkey.” With that, the two of them put on shirts.

After a while, the sage again signaled and they threw him pants. As before, the sage asked, “What makes you think that you can’t be a turkey if you wear pants?” With that, the two of them put on pants.

The sage continued in this manner until they were both completely dressed. Then he signaled for regular food, from the table. The sage then asked the prince, “What makes you think that you will stop being a turkey if you eat good food? You can eat whatever you want and still be a turkey!” With that, the two of them ate regular food.

Finally, the sage said, “What makes you think that a turkey must sit under the table? Even a turkey can sit at the table.” Soon they both sat at the table eating good food.

Not long after the prince was completely cured.

This Week on Tuesday - Purim Katan

Purim Minor

In regular years, the 14th of Adar is Purim, the festival that celebrates the salvation of the Jewish people from Haman's evil decree in the year 3405 from creation (356 BCE according to Seder Olam Raba). In a leap year -- which has two Adars -- Purim is celebrated in Adar II, and the 14th of Adar I  is designated as Purim Kattan, the "Little Purim." There are no special observances, however, associated with Purim Kattan, other than the omission of Tachnun ("supplications") from the daily prayers and a prohibition against fasting or holding eulogies on this day. The Code of Jewish Law cites an opinion that one should increase in festivity and joy, but rules that there is no obligation to do so; "Nevertheless,a person should increase somewhat in festivity... for 'One who is of good heart is festive always' " (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 697:1). Haftarat T’tsave – Yehezkel (Ezekiel), Chapter 43:10-27

Haftit: Ezekiel has a prophecy where he “sees” the divine presence re-entering the Holy Temple. This takes place 20 years after Ezekiel had the prophecy of the “Ma’aseh Hamerkavah” or that of Hashem’s throne lifting itself up and out of the first Bait Hamikdash. He is about the experience the vision of Hashem’s presence returning to the Holy Temple. (haftorahman)

Connection to the Parasha: The Torah portion discusses the Building of the Mishkan, Tabernacle.  It also deals with the sacrifices that were brought in the Mishkan. The Haftarah of Tetsaveh contains the prophet Ezekiel’s description of a future Bait Hamikdash. (haftorahman)

Speechless in the Parasha - T’tsave

The parasha details the clothes of the priests. Details tend to make people bored and get distracted. One way to stay focus is to imagine! What did the Kohen Gadol had on his head?

Jewish World - Sudan Jewry

Unbeknown to many, there was once a community of Jews living in the Sudan. This community, like most living in Arab countries, was driven to extinction in the last 50 years and its descendants dispersed to Israel, France, Switzerland the US.

The modern community grew and thrived after the British under Lord Kitchener re-conquered the Sudan in 1898. It was concentrated mainly in Khartoum. The country came under Anglo-Egyptian rule. Some converts returned to Judaism. By the middle of the 20th century the community included some 350 Jews, mainly of Sephardic background, who had constructed a synagogue and a Jewish school.

The community suffered persecution in the wake of the Arab-Israeli wars. Between 1948 and 1956, some members of the community left the country, and it finally ceased to exist by the early sixties.

But an earlier community, before the arrival of the British, was decimated when Jews were forcibly converted to Islam.
