Psychosophy Subtypes

Introduction

I made this document for a few reasons.

First of all, I was curious to discover for myself how the subtypes came to be.

On top of that I felt like the origin of the subtypes, and generally what they are and are not, weren’t explained well in the well known subtype document. And also the singular interpretation of the subtypes we had in that one document was very limiting. Which was the cause for the third reason to happen.

The third reason being that people were taking those specific subtype descriptions too literally and also misunderstanding how the subtypes in psychosophy work, assuming they work the same as Enneagram subtypes. And I was guilty of this at some point. So I wanted to change that and make my own document with my interpretation of the subtypes, hopefully creating more nuanced views and helping people understand the subtypes in general. For this reason I tried my best to incorporate the nature of the core placement into each subtype description.

Ending note

How are the subtypes made

In Psychosophy, each placement (1, 2, 3, 4) has a set of defining traits. Some of the traits are shared by two placements, and the opposing traits by the other placements. This creates a dichotomy, where there are two opposites (dichotomies are used in plenty of systems, a known one is introvert/extravert in Jung/MBTI/Socionics). The three dichotomies that possess this quality are strong/weak, result/process, and introverted/extraverted, also known as ‘aggressive/passive’. The first two are explained in detail in Syntax of Love, the other one is mentioned throughout the book.

This is most likely where the concept of subtypes originated from, as it is not part of the original theory.

Now the theory goes that for each placement one of these three dichotomies is enhanced, or more prominent than the other two. Therefore creating three subtypes for every function.

Dichotomies

Strong/Weak

The difference between strong functions (1, 2) and weak functions (3, 4) is the easiest to spot. In the order of functions, there is a clear division between those we prefer and those we prioritize less. A strong function is one used with ease, one you find important, and one you’re more likely to influence others with. A weak function is the opposite. It’s something you don’t have the ability to influence others with, but you can be influenced in. It is an aspect you consider weak, lacking, inefficient, although there can be a lot of denial regarding the third function, so you may not admit it is a weak function.

Result/Process

The result (1, 4) and process (2, 3) dichotomy is also an important one. As the name suggests, result functions are those which when they are used or expressed, the result is more valuable than the process. Whereas for the process it is opposite, they value the process more than the result. Another aspect of this dichotomy is that the result functions are less likely to want to engage with others in terms of the function, whereas processional functions want interaction as much as possible. This is not to be confused with Introverted/Extraverted.

Introverted/Extraverted

Now the introverted (1, 3) and extraverted (2, 4) dichotomy is harder to get information on because there is not a definitive section, however there is still a clear difference. Another name for this is the aggressive/passive dichotomy. It is said that the 2nd and 4th functions (for example 2L and 4L) look the same outwardly.

The 2nd and 4th are more passive and tolerant of external expression of the function in that placement. The introverted functions are less tolerant of other people’s expression in these aspects, and are more likely to judge others in this aspect or ignore it altogether. The aggressive functions are generally more focused on themselves whereas the passive functions are more likely to adapt to others.

Other important information

Now that we have covered what the subtypes are and what the different dichotomies entail, it is time to get into how to type yourself. First of all, I want to get out of the way that the subtypes are not a way to type your psychosophy type. As I said, the subtypes are an extension of the core function and unlike in enneagram, they don’t affect the core placement or distort it.

It is likely that you relate to every subtype, as every dichotomy is present in the core function. Another reason placements present differently is because placements have influence on each other. The core function will be the same, but depending on the way the other functions are stacked, they may present differently. 1E will present differently in EFVL vs ELFV. And subtypes may be more common amongst specific types because of this (see archetypes)

I have seen a lot of people use the one other document as a full proof source for how the subtypes act, which should not be the case as it is a subjective interpretation of how the enhanced dichotomy presents. It is not an accurate representation of the full placement.

I want to emphasize again that the subtypes are an enhancement of one of the three dichotomies that every placement possesses. This is also why 1x-1 or any other double number does not exist in psychosophy subtypes, unlike attitudinal psyche.

Another thing I take issue with is the idea that for example 1E-3 is a more insecure 1E because of the subtype being a 3. This is not the case as it is just an enhanced dichotomy that the 1st and 3rd function share. I’d go as far as to say 1E-4 is the 1E that appears like 3E in the stereotypical sense.

I’ve also seen a lot of people ask the difference between for example 1V-4 and 4V-1, when the core functions are nearly complete opposites except for the result dichotomy. You cannot be a subtype of a placement you don’t relate to, even when you do relate to the subtype.

Notation

There are four main notations for these subtypes and I will describe, explain and give an example for each one.

The first and most common one being the subtype numbers in brackets after your core psychosophy type. The first number corresponds with the subtype for the first placement and so forth. Examples for this are:

LPWE(4231) and FLEV (4443)

The second way is having your subtypes attached to your psychosophy type in subscript or superscript. Again, the placement of the number corresponds with the subtype of the placement of the function. Examples for this are:

EWPL³¹¹² and VELF₂₃₄₄

The third way is having a number in superscript or subscript after each function. The numbers indicating the assigned subtype for the function they are right to. Examples of this are:

L²E¹V¹F² and E₃L₄P₁W₃

The final way is writing down each individual subtype. Examples of this are:

1V-4 2F-3 3E-2 4L-1 and 1P-2 2W-3 3L-1 4E-3

If your type is for example EFVL (or EPWL if you prefer psychosophy letters) and your subtypes are 1E-3, 2F-3, 3V-1 and 4L-1 you can write it down like:

EFVL(3311)

EFVL³³¹¹

EFVL₃₃₁₁

E³F³V¹L¹

E₃F₃V₁L₁

1E-4, 2F-3, 3V-1 4L-1

And every variation with EPWL instead of EFVL.

Self typing

So now that it’s clear what not to do, what are the best ways to type yourself? First and foremost, type yourself based on who you are, not who you want to be or try to be. Be honest to yourself, especially when it comes to the third placement. For your main psychosophy type I mostly recommend just reading the entirety of Syntax of Love first. Once you decide which type fits best, you can try to decide what dichotomy is most present for each of your placements. If you don’t know how exactly it would look, this doc is made just for that.

If you don’t feel like reading the full book there are some sites and docs, however many people don’t realize that the placements and dichotomies are not all that matters since the functions interact with each other when in a type. I do recommend reading the full type descriptions from “Syntax of Love”.

My advice for any self typing is just to read from a few different sources, weighing the original most, to see what the middle ground or core of a type is.

I’ll put some sources I like and used for this doc below.

The main source I used for this document is the book ‘Syntax of Love’ although subtypes are made by someone from the bestsocionics website, which I used as well. Both are linked below.

FAQ

Despite most of the answers being available in the important information section, I still wanted to do a frequently asked questions section to make sure everyones’ questions are answered.

How much do subtypes affect your type?

Short answer: barely.

Long answer: the subtypes are a theory made way after the original theory was out and the creator of it was dead. It is based on the dichotomies or traits of the types. Because of enneagram being a very popular system people assume subtypes can be as influential as in enneagram when in reality it’s simply a fun theory about extended dichotomies. When people use subtypes to support an argument for or against a contradiction it shows that they (understandably) misunderstand subtypes. Because in reality the subtypes do not change the core placement at all. The only way the core placements are influenced is by how they interact with one another in a type.

Do you need to relate to every subtype to have that placement?

Short answer: only the parts that go for every subtype.

Long answer: the subtypes do not change the core placement, so all subtypes are supposed to apply to you. However, since the other document about subtypes describes the subtype part only, and rarely mentions the actual core placement, it is logical for you to relate to the other subtype descriptions less. The descriptions in this document apply to every subtype, but one of them will fit more than the others. So if you only relate to parts of a subtype that doesn’t go for the core placement, you are likely not that subtype or placement. However, sometimes placements are placeholders and you may relate to only one of the dichotomies. In that case a subtype might be more relatable than the core as a whole, but it is important not to use subtypes as a tool for measurement.

Why don’t subtypes with the same number, like 1E-1 for example, exist?

Short answer: the number doesn’t mean much, it just implies a dichotomy.

Long answer: the subtype theory is based on the traits that are shared between two placements, creating dichotomies. And that in everyone one of those traits is more prominent per placement. The easiest way to write that down is by adding the number of the placement that the trait is shared with. The idea that for example 1X-3 is a more insecure or ‘3ish’ first placement is mostly untrue. The 3 in for example 1E-3 just points to the introverted dichotomy which the first and third placement share. Dichotomies only exist if there is a polarity, there cannot be a dichotomy in one placement. There are traits that only one placement has, however these are not taken into consideration for subtypes.

Is it important to learn subtypes or can I just not use them?

Short answer: they are not important.

Long answer: subtypes are not part of the original theory but got popular online. So you could see them having the same level of importance as loops or wings have. However the dichotomies are part of the original theory so you could argue it is implied as well. You definitely don’t have to use them, but they can be pretty fun if actually understood.

How can I tell the difference between for example 1V-4 and 4V-1?

Short answer: learn to understand the core placements before learning subtypes.

Long answer: learning the difference between 1V and 4V or whatever placements you insert is so important. It is not possible to know your subtypes if you don’t know your full type. This is the case for nearly every system (the only exception I can think of is DCNH). The only thing 1V-4 and 4V-1 have in common is the result dichotomy. Other than that they are nearly opposites. And that is the case with every other subtypes you have this question for. The more well known subtype descriptions make it seem like they’re nearly the same. And although the description isn’t bad, they never clarify anywhere that you have to know your type before subtypes, which spreads the misinformation that 1V-4 and 4V-1 are very similar. In this specific case I also recommend reading the descriptions in this document. The main difference between 1V and 4V is that 1V has a strong, powerful character that knows what they want and how to get it, taking the lead when they can, whereas 4V is unbothered about power or desire, following along with higher will

placements.

Are subtypes a good way to type yourself or understand the difference between placements?

Short answer: not really.

Long answer: although subtypes may help you understand placements if you look into the dichotomies themselves and how subtypes came to be, the subtype descriptions that most people use do not accurately convey the basics of the placements. Typing yourself with subtypes only is also not recommended. Although I tried to incorporate as much from the core placements as possible, it is important to understand that subtypes are just that, subtypes. Especially when it comes to the well known subtype descriptions. As when I typed myself based on those descriptions alone I landed on FELV(4121) when my actual core type is ELVF.

Archetypes

An archetype is the type that has, compared to the other respective types of that system, the most resemblance to another type from a different system. This section is a list of what subtypes I think are most likely to occur for each psychosophy type, based on the descriptions in this document. This does not mean that it is required for a type to have a certain subtype. While writing the descriptions I saw correlations, and I wanted to share them. Feel free to draw your own conclusion about archetypes and correlations too, this is just my interpretation.

My subtype descriptions

Non function specific descriptions

1st Function

The first function possesses the strong, result, and introverted dichotomies. Also called the confident function.

1X-2, Strong 1X

This placement is easily seen to be very strong. These people are usually aware of their confidence with their first function. They know how to use the abundance of the first function to influence people whilst still remaining self focused. This subtype is also prone to humble bragging and might be seen as snobbish by other placements, specifically 3X, of the same function. This function is clearly very important to the owner and they will not be afraid to express it, (or rather lack the ability not to).

1X-3, Introverted 1X

This subtype is the least tolerant of the expression of other people out of all of them. They have a natural righteousness regarding the function, and they only care about the way they engage with it. With the addition of the result dichotomy these people are pretty much only concerned with their own placement. This is not a bad thing however, as they’re usually the best at dealing with the abundance of the first function.

1X-4, Result 1X

This subtype is the least likely to search for interaction with others regarding the function. They are most focused on getting the result they desire whenever they use their function and are barely interested in dialogue. They go for what they want regarding the function and that’s it. This makes them very self-sufficient.

2nd Function

The second function possesses the strong, process, and extraverted dichotomies. Also called the flexible function.

2X-1, Strong 2X

This subtype is most inclined to help others regarding the function. They genuinely enjoy sharing the function with others and helping them in this aspect. They tend to be the best at giving advice that truly considers the other person. They strive to influence people with this function as they know this function to them is a great strength. The person with this subtype is very confident in this function, yet still flexible.

2X-3, Process 2X

This subtype is the most (inter)active. They absolutely love sharing whatever function is in the position and feel at ease doing so. They get completely swept away in the process of having a dialogue or interaction with others regarding this function. Despite feeling confident in the function, they truly see others’ expression of the function as equal. They also feel most comfortable when the function is constantly changing. They love the flow of it.

2X-4, Extraverted 2X

This subtype is a fantastic listener. They are truly engaged in how others experience or express the function, without being shaken by it at all. They enjoy watching how others deal with the function and usually know a lot of different viewpoints on it because of that. They easily adapt to others’ expression of the function in this position. This subtype is very likely to be mistaken for being the 4th function from an outside perspective, however the 2nd function is very interested in the process of the aspect, and is more confident in their function.

3rd Function

The third function possesses the weak, process, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as the insecure function.

3X-1, Introverted 3X

This subtype is most prone to projecting. They feel insecure in their placement and therefore they will criticize other people’s expression of this placement. Despite the third placement being a processional placement, this subtype is most likely to keep things to themselves because they do not trust others with their vulnerability, they are afraid of judgment. They’re the most stubborn against letting other people influence them, despite their efforts not working out most of the time.

3X-2, Process 3X

This subtype is the type to test the waters. They appear the least cautious out of the 3rd placement subtypes. They are more comfortable with exchange than the other subtypes. They are a lot more cautious than the 2nd placement alternative, but they’re still the most daring out of the 3rd placement subtypes. On the rare occasion they feel confident in expressing themselves, they find themselves enjoying interaction with others in this function. This subtype is also most likely to notice the smallest of changes in their respective function, of both themselves and their environment.

3X-4, Weak 3X

This subtype is the most impotent, against their will. They really struggle influencing others with this function despite their wishes. This subtype feels specifically incompetent about their function. The insecurity of the third function is usually the most obvious in this subtype because they simply feel powerless. On top of that, this subtype is least likely to actively try to prove this function to not be weak, because they feel there is no influence here.

4th Function

The fourth function possesses the weak, result, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as the unbothered function.

4X-1, Result 4X

This subtype is the laziest. Or the least caring. The fourth placement is the one you care for least, and when the resultative dichotomy is enhanced, this function is super subconscious and in the back of the mind. They really do not care to engage in the function too much, especially in interaction with others. And when they do engage in the function, they do not care for the process, they just want to skip the process.

4X-2, Extraverted 4X

This subtype is the most easygoing. They don’t feel very strongly about the aspects of the function so they tend to go along with other people's expression of it. They are easy to convince and get along with when it comes to their fourth function. They will easily agree with others or do what is most convenient in general, rather than think of it themselves.

4X-3, Weak 4X

This subtype is the most apathetic. They absolutely do not care for the function and tend to easily forget to use or take care of it. They aren’t interested in influencing others with it nor do they have the ability to. They can be swayed and influenced in this function with ease. The function is probably easy to spot in a person with this subtype as they pretty much completely ignore this function.

Emotion (E)

The emotional function is all about emotions, feelings, moods, experiences, love and heart reactions.

1st Emotion

1E possesses the strong, result, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as confident emotion.

1E-2, Strong 1E

Strong 1E or 1E-2 is the type most inclined to emotional expression.

Emotions are very important to them and they thoroughly enjoy feeling all that they feel. They are very aware of their emotional strength, and it’s comfortable for them to express this. They often cling to their emotional expression and understanding as their proudest and most confident aspect.

This is also the subtype that is most likely to emotionally support others with their emotions, and they usually take pride in the fact that they do. But they still focus on their own emotions, and in their expression they do not desire monologue, they just want to be able to express what they feel. Unlike the 2E-1, who is mostly focused on dialogue as well as not fully expressing themselves and rather adjusting to the situation or atmosphere.

This subtype usually also has a very great appreciation for art, music, poetry or anything that they deem beautiful or use as a form of extensive self expression.

1E-3, Introverted 3E

Introverted 1E or 1E-3 is the subtype that is most critical of the emotional expression of others. They feel their way of emotional expression is most important and the best. Although it may seem harsh, they are usually very well developed and knowledgeable emotionally, so it’s best not to take their advice to heart.

Despite the many stereotypes, 1E-3 is the subtype most likely to express what they want regardless of what people say. Because with the enhancement of the introverted dichotomy, they distrust others' opinions of their emotions. The 3E-1 uses their distrust as a reason to never express their emotions in front of others, whereas 1E-3 uses their distrust as a reason to express their emotions regardless of what people will think of them.

However, they might still be inclined to express their emotions where others are not around. But this is because they aren’t interested in getting comments on it as they are confident in their expression, rather than being afraid of judgment like 3E (specifically 3E-1) would be.

1E-4, Result 1E

This subtype is the most reserved. These people are not very interested in talking about their emotions. They do not care for the process, they just want to have that emotional outlet.

Expressing emotions can be in the form of talking about them, however this subtype will not be having in depth conversations about their emotions and how they are developing. They will go into a monologue or write a paragraph (less common for ELxx) in order to have expressed what they wanted to and get the result, which is usually a feeling of relief.

This subtype is most likely to be brief with their expression. When you ask them how they are they will reply with a short and honest answer. They are not emotionally shallow at all, however they do not care to have dialogue about their emotions.

This subtype also might appear to change mood rapidly. This is due to the fact they want to be done with an emotion as soon as they notice it is there, and when they have expressed it they can easily move on.

2nd Emotion

2E possesses the strong, process, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as flexible emotion.

2E-1, Strong 2E

This subtype enjoys learning about emotions the most. They are very interested in researching human emotions and experience, preferably through real life experience and interaction.

This subtype can be a fantastic therapist or mentor because they are very emotionally wise, and are interested in others emotions as well as their own. They are very emotionally intelligent and know exactly when to express what emotion according to the situation. They tend to be very animated because of this.

They are great at emotionally controlling situations. When someone breaks down at an inconvenient time they will know how to calm the situation down without making anyone feel embarrassed. They are the least burdened to deal with emotional immaturity because they are so strong in the emotional atmosphere but still have that passive dichotomy, unlike 1E.

2E-3, Process 2E

This subtype is the most flirty. These people absolutely love to play emotional games, including flirting. They just very much enjoy having any kind of interaction of emotions, especially playful ones.

They are not very direct with their emotions, but unlike 3E, it is because they are mostly interested in having emotional interaction and connection. And when you’re direct about your emotions, to them it feels like the fun is gone. This might make them seem more mysterious, but in a charming or intriguing way.

This subtype is usually very aware of the emotional atmosphere and knows exactly how to play in on it. They love sharing experiences and might ‘troll’ a bit (emotionally) to see how it influences people, or if it catches them off guard.

2E-4, Extraverted 2E

This subtype is the most emotionally supportive. These are the people who are willing to help anyone emotionally at all times. They are very attentive to other peoples’ emotions and whenever someone feels bad they are most likely out of all emotion subtypes to assure them, help them, offer emotional support, etc. These people will offer help, on an emotional level, wherever they can. When someone needs help they will make sure to put their own issues aside. When they notice someone in need emotionally they will not hesitate to help.

These people are very careful about when they express their emotions in order to keep everyone else happy, as they know they can deal with their emotions themselves.

They are also most accommodating to others’ emotional needs. Unlike the 4E-2, which is unbothered towards their own emotional needs and therefore easily accommodates others, the 2E-4 knows that they can help themselves either way and are attentive to the emotional atmosphere. Therefore they will accommodate the emotional needs of other people.

3rd Emotion

3E possesses the weak, process, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as the insecure emotion.

3E-1, Introverted 3E

This subtype is the most closed off. They keep their emotions to themselves. They don’t like to admit it, but they are terrified of being judged for their emotions and feeling weak.

They deeply (consciously or not) envy others who freely express their emotions, and that results in them carefully analyzing and criticizing others’ emotionality. This subtype is the most likely to make snarky remarks about people expressing any kind of emotion, out of all the emotion subtypes.

This subtype will never cry in front of others and might be conscious of expressing anger, fear,  or happiness as well. However, being a process emotion type, they will still be interested in discussion of emotions. This will most likely not be about their emotions, but rather what they nitpick about other peoples’ expressions.

3E-2, Process 3E

This subtype is the most likely to engage in conversation regarding emotions. They love studying the way other people express themselves and may try to mimic it as well. They tend to be interested in this without knowing and admitting it, as they still strive to have their own emotions.

Despite being very insecure about the way they express emotions, this subtype might talk about or express their emotions if that means furthering the interaction. This might make them more flirty and daring.

This subtype is most likely to pay extreme attention to every subtle emotional reaction people have. They are very careful with their own reactions as well, and are most sensitive to changes in the emotional atmosphere. This makes them prone to withdrawal if any emotional reaction is off. Out of all the emotion subtypes, this subtype is most likely to analyze their (and others’) emotions into oblivion, and spend large amounts of time evaluating them.

3E-4, Weak 3E

This subtype is the most withdrawn. They feel very insecure in their emotions and really don’t want to show anyone. They often feel quite helpless in their emotions and easily envy others who are more emotionally competent or expressive than they are.

This subtype may want to try to engage in emotional back and forth, but they really struggle to. And if they do, they often get out of it feeling more insecure about their emotions, wishing they could be more expressive.

They are more likely to seem apathetic on the outside, like they don’t care for their emotional world. However they care more than they like to admit, they just tend to struggle so much with it that they have kind of given up on their emotions. Being confronted with them is very painful, so they try to avoid it, and not fight back or project (a 3E-1 would fight back and project).

4th Emotion

4E possesses the weak, result, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as unbothered emotion.

4E-1, Result 4E

This subtype is the least emotionally concerned. This subtype really does not want to spend a lot of time reflecting on or evaluating or even feeling their emotions. They genuinely think it is a waste of time and they prefer to spend time on their other functions.

When they struggle emotionally they know how to self regulate in order to be done with their emotions as quickly as possible. This may make them seem like a strong emotion type, however a strong emotion subtype is more significantly influenced by their emotions in day to day life. Whereas this subtype is still very much an unbothered emotion type.

This subtype is not easily bothered by emotions. Instead they simply let their emotions pass and get on with what they were originally doing, which they much prioritize.

4E-2, Extraverted 4E

This subtype is the most comforting. Although they do not care for emotions much at all, people with this subtype are very accepting of the way other people may express their emotions. Possibly because they care so little for their own emotions.

This subtype is most likely to comfort a friend if they need it, or be emotionally responsive in general, even if they don’t know the right way to do so. They will not go out of their way to talk about emotions, and in their daily life they do not spend a lot of time evaluating their emotions, but when a friend is in need of support this subtype won’t leave them hanging.

On the outside people with this subtype may look more friendly or engaged when it comes to emotionality. This is because they don’t put much effort into an emotional atmosphere and just adapt to whatever is convenient or accepted in their current environment.

4E-3, Weak 4E

This subtype is the most apathetic. They know that emotions are not their strong suit, and they are aware of their struggle with properly helping others in emotional situations. However they also don’t feel like improving this.

This subtype is the most likely to simply give up if they try to emotionally express themselves but fail to do so properly. They get reminded that emotions are not of much importance to them in the first place, and they don’t care to put effort or time into them too much.

They might seem ‘emotionally constipated’, or like they lack empathy like a 3E, however their emotions do not bother them like they bother a 3E. They simply really don’t care for their emotions.

Logics (L)

The logical function is all about mind, reason, intelligence (weak logics ≠ dumb). The ability to mentally see the essence of things, the connection between them and accurately describe them.

1st Logics

1L possesses the strong, result, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as confident logics.

1L-2, Strong 1L

This subtype is the most confident. Logic is their very strong suit and they love to share their world view with people. However they do this for the sake of expressing their opinions, not as an invite to discussion.

These people show clear confidence whenever they do enter a debate, and are most likely to enter a debate despite not being open to a change of opinion. This is because they believe they can help other people by introducing their correct ideas.

They are also most certain of their ideas, no matter if they are correct or not. This makes them the most prone to reading and writing. They are sure of their opinions and want to share them with the world in a way that doesn’t lead to challenging of their ideals, making them the type to write.

1L-3, Introverted 1L

This is the most pretentious subtype. People of this subtype are most likely to discard other peoples’ opinions and worldviews. Although they don’t enjoy discussion, if they participate in discussion, they are not doing it for the sake of discussing, they are usually doing it to let other people know that they are incorrect.

This subtype is very critical of any ideas that do not fit in with their worldview and will easily say no to any opinions that question them, because they believe they do not need to be questioned as their opinion is already correct.

They are also least likely to come to an agreement with other people that don’t share their ideas and opinions. They don’t care to convince, they just want to impose their correct ideas onto others.

1L-4, Result 1L

This subtype is the most impenetrable. Once they form an opinion on something they do not feel it is necessary to change it. They have a set few ideas and they live by that. This subtype is not interested in convincing and does not want to be convinced either.

On top of that, this subtype does not care for discussions. They believe it has absolutely no point to discuss, and are very unlikely to engage in any sort of discussion. They strongly believe that they have found their own opinions through research, and that discussions will not change their perception.

The only time these people will ‘engage’ in discussion, is to express their point of view once and for all, or to maybe consider the conclusion of the discussion. This might make them seem unbothered about intellectualism, but this is not the case. They are simply more interested in having a finalized opinion than discussing.

2nd Logics

2L possesses the strong, process, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as flexible logics.

2L-1, Strong 2L

This subtype is the most teacher-like. They are the type to want to influence people with their logic and are willing to explain something over and over in order to help someone understand, or to convince the other person in conversation of their opinion.

People of this subtype appear to have the most stable and strongly formed opinion out of the 2L subtypes. This is because the 2L-4 is most accepting of other peoples’ opinions, and 2L-3 is most interested in the process of forming an opinion rather than having one. The 2L-1 is most prone to want to influence and convince people.

This subtype seems to be more firm than the other two. They do not state their opinion as a fact, but they seem to be more oriented toward influencing and convincing.

On top of that this subtype is the most intellectually focused. They are more likely to read books and articles. Whether it be on a topic of interest, or any given topic that they stumble into.

2L-3, Process 2L

This subtype is the most talkative. They will join any discussion they can without any fear of being wrong. Even if they don’t know much about the subject, these people will listen in and make something up along the way. They may find it hard to write down their thoughts, and they are most prone to coming to a completely different conclusion as they write.

These people are also most prone to ‘troll’ a bit. They are constantly searching for a conversation or exchange of opinions and love to throw in random things to spark a discussion. Even if they do not believe in it, they might share a controversial opinion just to see what people think and create discussion or discourse.

These people are not afraid to change their mind as they are constantly searching for new viewpoints on any topics, even the ones they know a lot about. This may make them appear to not have a developed opinion or like they are easily influenced, but this is not the case. They usually have a worldview they are willing to defend strongly, but they are interested in constantly developing knowledge and challenging themselves.

2L-4, Extraverted 2L

This subtype is the most impartial. Despite being strong in their logic, they are very open to new opinions and may not assert or impose their own opinion on someone else. They like to go into debates where they don’t know a lot or haven’t really formed an opinion, as they feel very at ease forming, accepting and reproducing opinions.

This makes them more prone than the other subtypes to take on an opinion someone else may have if they find themselves agreeing with it. Making them very intellectually flexible. This can often result in them ending up as a translator between two people with opposing opinions, as they are able to see any side.

This subtype is also the most fearless. But not in a daring sense, they are simply rather relaxed and confident forming and sharing their opinions. They don’t feel shame in being wrong or talking about something they don’t know about.

3rd Logics

3L possesses the weak, process, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as insecure logics.

3L-1, Introverted 3L

This subtype is very frustrated. They very desperately want to form their own opinion on things, and be able to express it freely. However, being weak logics, they are prone to letting others influence their thoughts. This gives them a sense of frustration.

On top of that, they get frustrated with themselves and others when someone, especially someone who is less intellectual than them, talks so freely about their opinions. They feel like they have so much to say, but they are too afraid to let it out.

This leads them to criticize other peoples’ worldviews and opinions a lot, albeit in their head. Generally, 3Ls are often very knowledgeable on a lot of things. And when someone gets their facts wrong they want nothing more than to correct them. In a rare case they might have the confidence to do so. But when they don’t, this ends up in even more frustration. Sometimes they cope with this by complaining about it to someone else.

3L-2, Process 3L

This subtype is the most curious. The 3L is naturally the most curious subtype, but with the process dichotomy enhanced, they are even more curious. They might spend hours and hours researching a topic so they can be sure they know enough to be able to discuss it, despite being very insecure.

Even if the 3L is too afraid to talk, the 3L-2 is always listening to other people discussing, carefully analyzing everything they’re saying and trying to absorb the information. They may secretly hope that there comes a point in the discussion where something is brought up which they have confidence making a remark about. If this comment is well received they will feel very validated for sharing their knowledge.

This subtype is constantly engaging in intellectually stimulating things like puzzles or philosophy or any games that require a big amount of thinking and intellectualism. To challenge themselves, prove themselves and  try to overcome their feeling of envy towards people who are more expressive of their knowledge and opinions.

3L-4, Weak 3L

This subtype is the most self conscious, logic wise. They are painfully aware of their lack of ability to influence the opinions of other people, despite wanting to do so really badly.

They doubt themselves a lot when it comes to their logic and opinions and often feel inadequate, despite usually being knowledgeable. They subconsciously really fear expressing their opinion and are terrified of being wrong.

Whenever they see someone who does in fact influence others in their logic, they tend to get a deep, subconscious sense of envy. All they want to do is be able to express their knowledge and openly discuss it, but their fear of rejection is too big. This causes them to stay quiet most of the time.

4th Logics

4L possesses the weak, result, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as unbothered logics

4L-1, Result 4L

This subtype is the most anti-intellectual. They are not interested in forming an opinion on things. This causes them to just quickly create or share an opinion when asked and then not put any thought into it again.

They are not interested in discussions, debates, intellectual challenges and exchange of worldview. They feel as though those activities are a waste of time. If they do participate in a debate, they are only doing it for the result. They wait for others to talk it out to see what the conclusion is and take that as the truth.

This subtype tends to go into monologue whenever they do share an opinion. However, since they are not very interested in logic, their opinions might seem to be lacking consistency or sense, and seem like a conspiracy theory rather than a logical argument.

4L-2, Extraverted 4L

This subtype is the most likely to copy. They easily take on others’ opinions or accept them as the truth, causing them to contradict themselves more often. They don’t enjoy spending time thoroughly analyzing a topic before they draw their own conclusion, so instead they just believe what others say without putting much thought into it. This makes them appear gullible.

When this subtype expresses their opinion, it is often not their own. Since they do not care about logic, and the extraverted dichotomy is enhanced, they easily accept an opinion as their own. If you are the first to introduce them to a topic, they are likely to take your word for the truth on the situation.

Another quality this subtype has is that, like 2L, they have no fear in drawing conclusions even if they turn out to be incorrect. Whereas 1L and 3L are careful when drawing conclusions or expressing their opinion, this subtype specifically is fearless about sharing their opinions. They are unbothered regarding the subject anyway, so why would they care about any criticism they get.

4L-3, Weak 4L

This subtype is the most easily convinced. Due to their indifference towards logics, they easily accept new views if someone has a decent argument. They’re not very interested in arguing back so they’ll just take on what you have to say. They are easy to influence. But this also means that they may switch opinions easily, because if someone else comes with an argument after you convinced them, they will adapt to that point of view or argument instead.

This subtype is the most skeptic, but not in the way 3Ls are skeptic. They are skeptic in a way that they don’t see the point in spending time on philosophizing or rationalizing, and therefore may discard logical claims easily.

These people truly just stick to what they are taught instead of putting effort into creating their own arguments and worldviews. They are easily swayed and very logically inconsistent.

Physics (F)

The physical function is all about the physical body and everything to do with it. Habits, labor, life, pain, fights, sex, physical preferences and appearance (in ‘Syntax of Love’ it is mentioned that appearance is only accurate for 70% at most, and it’s not an accurate way to type yourself. It is also unclear if it differs per subtype. Therefore I will not be talking about it).

1st Physics

1F possesses the strong, result, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as confident physics.

1F-2, Strong 1F

This subtype has the thickest skin, figuratively. They are not bothered much by physical discomfort or pain of any sort. They can easily eat spicy food or hear a loud noise or bump their foot against the table without making a sound. They are very resistant towards any physical damage. As well as not being jealous (not envious) of their partner on a physical level.

This also means they are less adept with physical details. They may be somewhat tone deaf, in a literal sense, or not be able to tell apart different color shades or food brands. To them it all looks, sounds and tastes the same. They don’t tend to notice the subtle differences.

They are confident and quick to do physical tasks (as long as there is a promised result) and as a child they tend to want to be able to do all sorts of physical crafts. However unlike the 2F(-1), they don’t care about the process, they simply want to understand mechanics and such and they are quickly able to replicate, as they are so confident and fearless in the physical area. And despite their laziness, they are the most interesting in sport, especially bodybuilding or fighting sports.

1F-3, Introverted 1F

This subtype is the most possessive. When something is theirs, it’s theirs and if someone takes it from them they are not afraid to resort to violence.

They also believe that they are the best at their craft, which is often true. They don’t like to work much but they are good at what they do. And their habits and tastes usually only attune to them and other 1Fs. They want expensive or bold clothes, they want loud sounds, bright colors. And they don’t really care how others respond to it.

They are also sexually dominant. They do it for their pleasure and they want to decide what happens. Whether they give or take, it’s about them and not their partner.

1F-4, Result 1F

This subtype is the most efficient. They don’t do anything if there is no result. They only work if they’re paid, they only have sex if they have an orgasm, they only work on themselves to look good, when they’re hungry they eat, etc. They are often unhygienic as a result because they only care for what looks good and not the process.

These people always search for the easiest way to get what they want. And when it comes to money they obviously might get into gambling. Whether this be in a casino or simply by playing the lottery, they would rather get money easily than by working, even if it means they lose their money. However they do respond aggressively to physical losses, but since their physics is above their logic, they do not think about that in advance.

They are prone to have only one child if any, as the child is the result and having another one will only be an option if that gives them something.

2nd Physics

2F possesses the strong, process, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as flexible physics.

2F-1, Strong 2F

This subtype is the most coach-like. They love using their flexibility of physics to teach and assist people. They tend to be trainers, instructors, or coaches because they stay active themselves and actively help others while doing so.

They’re also great at helping others physically. Whether it be by letting them borrow clothes if they’re cold, cooking for them when they are sick or tired or simply comforting them with touch. This makes them the most fit to take care of the elderly, sickly, poor, and disabled who struggle physically.

They’re confident in their physical ability and will take on physical challenges or extra work if asked of them. They are hard workers and don’t mind a challenge. Whether it be dared to a game of arm wrestling or taking the work of a colleague calling in sick.

2F-3, Process 2F

This subtype is the most active. They are constantly finding physical activities to do. These are the people who wake up at 6 in the morning to go on a walk, then do yoga, go to work until 6 in the afternoon, cook, work out, do mindfulness and then rest. And they don’t have a specific goal, they simply love the process. They seem like they never take a break but they love doing it.

This subtype is also the most touchy. They love interacting with the world and other people. Out of every physics subtype, this one is most likely to have physical touch as their love language. But not just people, they have fine taste for textures that they love touching and food that they love eating. They just love being in touch with everything around them.

Especially in combination with 1V (first will) this subtype is most prone to being workaholics, mostly in a physical sense but also working. They are always busy doing whatever they can, preferably hands on.

2F-4, Extraverted 2F

This subtype is the most accepting physically. Since they are confident and flexible in their physics, they will easily adapt to other peoples’ habits and physical schedules or preferences. If someone likes a food that they haven’t tried, they will gladly try it.

They are very easy going when it comes to their tastes and touch which may make them seem 4F, but the 4F is rather unbothered whereas the 2F-4 does it with care. They are confident in their physical abilities and enjoy exploring it. Despite this they are also peace makers and don’t like fighting, but will use their ability to fight if necessary.

They are also most likely to physically accommodate. They are very good hosts in a sense that they will always ask someone if they need something or if they want something to drink. They are very attentive of peoples’ physical needs and may have medical kits, period products or extra water, food, or money on them just in case someone needs it.

3rd Physics

3F possesses the weak, process, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as insecure physics.

3F-1, Introverted 3F

This subtype is the most superficial. Because of their insecurity about the physical world they are easy to judge peoples’ appearance or habits. They might say something like “Is that really what you’re wearing?” or “Why would you eat that?”. They are so focused on trying to keep themselves healthy that they easily tell others off for not being like that out of pure insecurity. They desperately crave to be right in their own physics and attempt everything to appear strong or healthy, however they are fragile and insecure on the inside and will project that onto others.

This subtype is also most prone to engage in purity culture or wait for marriage. They have set that as a standard for themselves and may unconsciously judge others for not doing the same. As well as in fights, they don’t initiate them but when forced against their will, they will fend for themselves as hard as they can.

3F-2, Process 3F

This subtype is the most sensitive. They notice every subtle texture, sound, and light. As well as any small changes in them.

They are also the most obsessed with physical things. They are constantly and frantically on the search for the best skin care, the best diet, the best makeup. And they are also obsessed with keeping clean and healthy. They are constantly finding ways to keep themselves busy and active. They may overdo it as well which will only result in everything against what they are trying to do (for example, they may brush their teeth so much that the enamel will wear down, making them brittle).

3F-4, Weak 3F

This subtype is the most physically weak (as the name suggests). They can’t handle pain at all and feel a lot of discomfort on a daily basis. They can feel others pain as their own and just looking at or hearing someone in pain is too much for them.

They are easily insecure in any of their physical abilities or appearance (being insecure doesn’t make you this subtype). Seeing anyone with higher physics is very confronting to them as they feel so physically incapable.

They are very fragile, both physically and figuratively. And they find it very hard to do any intensive tasks despite attempting to be very active as other third physics people.

4th Physics

4F possesses the weak, result, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as unbothered physics.

4F-1, Result 4F

This subtype is the laziest. They don’t care much about their physical needs and what they need to do, they’d rather get out of the way quickly. This doesn’t have to mean they do it as soon as possible. Some of them wait until they truly have to eat or work out or anything of the sort, and be over with it quickly.

This subtype only does things for the result. They only take care of their hygiene or diet if they for example want to lose weight. Usually the goal has to do with other functions, specifically the insecure one. Or anything else they are insecure about (if they are made fun of by peers they may wear makeup to attempt to stop the bullying or to fit in).

This subtype will usually take whatever job is available to them that will give them enough money to live comfortably.

4F-2, Extraverted 4F

This subtype is the most adaptable. They will do whatever is most convenient to the people around them. Of course most of the time they may have their own preferences and boundaries, but they allow whoever they are with to do what they want since they don’t have much regard for their body and habits. You wanna eat pasta? Okay. You want a green wall instead of blue? Okay. You have a specific sexual fantasy you want me to fulfill? Okay.

This subtype is least likely to be lazy out of the 4F subtypes as well as maybe looking like a different physics placement. This is because they just adept and follow what is ordered or what is most wanted by others (physically).

4F-3, Weak 4F

This subtype is the most easily used. They have little to no self worth about their body and life, not in a sense of insecurity, but rather they don’t take care of it at all. This makes them most prone to suicidal tendencies.

They are the people you can get to do anything, they do all the dirty work and they don’t really mind. They have no real tastes or habits to hold onto and their body tends to be weak as well. They don’t put any effort into taking care of it either.

They don’t seek luxury and they aren’t good at complex crafts. They don’t enjoy doing sports much. They don’t or barely have any attachments to the physical world at all.

Will (V)

The volitional function is all about spirit, “I”, power, desire, management, character, personality, and temper.

1st Will

1V possesses the strong, result, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as confident will

1V-2, Strong 1V

This subtype thoroughly enjoys being in a leader position. They are good at leading others and know it. They will always take on a leadership role when they get the opportunity. They truly exude confidence and tend to have strong and bold personalities. They have a strong desire to leave a legacy and make an impact on the world, and this is something that comes naturally to them.

These people are the most likely to have a big influence on other people and the world. They exude confidence and have a natural ‘dominance’ specifically in group settings. Even in groups where other people may have higher social status or an advantage of any kind.

1V-3, Introverted 1V

This subtype is the most ruthless leader. They can be pretty sly and know how to make connections. These people are very politically aware and tend to be very tactful about the type of connections they make. They crave being in power and know how to get there.

They have a big thirst for recognition and honors. They want to make a name for themselves and leave a legacy behind. These people strongly desire to be recognized for their work and they’re not afraid to make it that way. They don’t need any external validation to make up for an insecurity like 3V, but they have a strong focus on honors and titles and tend to be very vain.

People of this subtype can also be very demanding in having people submit to their will and desire. They are very autonomous and make sure that they are in charge of what they do.

1V-4, Result 1V

This subtype is hierarchical. They are extremely black and white when it comes to hierarchy and will, without a doubt, place themselves on the top each and every time. They are at the top and they make it known.

They have a tendency towards tyranny, as they are not at all interested in the process or dialogue of power. Democracy is uninteresting to them and therefore they are focused on a simple division of power where only they are at the top.

This subtype is not easily swayed by attempts from others to take charge or maneuver and manipulate their will and desire.

2nd Will

2V possesses the strong, process, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as flexible will.

2V-1, Strong 2V

This subtype is the most democratic. Out of the 2V subtypes they are most likely to take on a leader position when asked. And they are very considerate leaders at that. Although they much  prefer to feel like everyone is in an equal position, they also know how to lead and will make use of that quality if necessary.

When making a decision they know how to find the best option and listen to what the people want. They take charge in a way that doesn’t feel like you are being bossed around. They are also great at taking responsibility.

They truly desire to influence people in a good way. And they naturally are great at giving people a boost of confidence, or helping them stand up for themselves.

2V-3, Process 2V

This subtype is the most fluid. They are confident enough in who they are and what they want, but in a way that they accept any changes to that. They know that people change and naturally allow themselves and others to do so.

These people have a very collegial feel to them. They feel like a partner, an equal. They don’t like to put themselves above or below another. They naturally and almost unconsciously always try to make the dynamic equal, as they have a natural sense for how the hierarchy is built. They do not see the world in black and white at all, they see all the layers to peoples’ identity and hate putting them in boxes or categories.

They know how to take their time to make an important decision and they don’t like to quickly jump to any conclusions (mostly regarding situations and choices, theoretical conclusions depend on their logic placement).

2V-4, Extraverted 2V

This subtype is the most agreeable (not necessarily Big 5). From the outside they’re extremely hard to tell apart from a 4V as they are both incredibly respectful and kind, however this subtype is very inclined to listen to what others want and accept them as people.

They are the most likely to naturally and genuinely cheer people on for doing something they want to do or being themselves or achieving a great goal. They are sincerely happy and supportive when other people achieve great things, get praised, or receive a position of power, even if said thing is part of their goals and desires as well.

They care a lot about being respectful and if someone else is not they are not likely to tell them off. They will try to continue being a good example or carefully encourage kindness.

3rd Will

3V possesses the weak, process, and introverted dichotomies. Also known as insecure will.

3V-1, Introverted 3V

This subtype is the most judgemental. They tend to judge other people for their goals, desires and frankly for who they are. This judgment usually comes from a deep, internal and usually unconscious sense of envy or feelings of unworthiness that they project onto others.

These people are also the most power hungry. They try to make up for their sense of inferiority by attempting to become superior. They are not great leaders, but they hate to admit this.

People of this subtype are also very autonomous. They want to make decisions for themselves. They want to be themselves. Even if they really struggle with this, they feel insulted when someone attempts to help them. This is usually because it makes them feel weak when they allow others to do something they struggle with.

3V-2, Process 3V

This subtype is the most hypervigilant. They are constantly aware of every dynamic and specific power dynamic around them. And they are very sensitive to them as well. They hate both leading and being lead and try to always be equal to everyone even if that’s not realistic.

They are also prone to picking apart peoples’ personalities completely. Because they feel like the pillar of their identity is unstable, whether they are conscious of this or not, they are very attentive to the way other people are and behave. They like to observe and listen to other people and they are usually good at spotting weaknesses.

They also hate being forced to make decisions, especially rushed ones. They always want to figure out every consequence before making any big decisions.

3V-4, Weak 3V

This subtype is most prone to feeling guilty. They are extremely insecure about any desire or goal they have and feel a sense of dread when thinking about actually pursuing them.

They hate how easily they are influenced by others and how much peoples’ words get to them. Since they do not have a good sense of identity, any remark someone makes about how they are perceived will send them into a spiral.

This subtype is also most likely to withdraw. They might feel completely weak and useless and this frustrates them to no end. Everyone seems to be better than them at everything. They are painfully aware of their lack of influence and whenever someone points it out they can’t shake off the feeling that they cannot achieve anything they want to.

4th Will

4V possesses the weak, result, and extraverted dichotomies. Also known as unbothered will.

4V-1, Result 4V

This subtype is the most unbothered. They do not care much for who they are and what they do, and when they decide on something there is not much thought put into it. They are not interested in changing their decisions a lot and are decisive in a sense that they’ll choose if needed or let other people choose for them and then stick to it.

The following is true for every 4V, but specifically this subtype. They do not see, or are not interested in seeing how a hierarchy can have layers, and therefore they always put themselves in the lower tier out of the two tiers they do see.

They are not interested in discussing who they are, what their goals and desires are and how they manage things. When they are asked they’ll just state something simple about themselves and leave it at that, not caring for the rest of the conversation or how others are in these aspects.

4V-2, Extraverted 4V

This subtype is most easy to pass through. They are very soft and open people, who outwardly appear very respectful and docile. They do not go against the crowd at all, they simply adhere to what is convenient.

These people will not feel like they have a strong role in society and therefore will accept any norms or standards they are put into with no resistance. They do not try to stand out or make their own decisions, they will go along with what they are assigned.

These people will adapt to anything they need to. They do not care to make their own life path or influence anyone else’s. They will take on others goals and aspirations, and go along with decisions others make.

4V-3, Weak 4V

This subtype is the easiest to influence. They don’t care to have a strong sense of identity. They know they cannot influence anyone else, and are totally okay with this. You can tell them who they are and they will freely accept it, it doesn’t matter to them so they might as well believe you.

They cannot be bothered to make decisions for themselves, let alone others. Their life path is up in the air and they are very susceptible to the influence of others. If someone tells them that they should have a certain job or make a certain choice or have a certain trait, they will abide by it.

These people obey without questioning. They will follow literally anyone and are very easily influenced. They do not feel any desire to impact or boss around others at all either.

Ending note

I did not expect this to be as difficult of a task as it was.

My first struggle was the fact that not even the most knowledgeable of people knew where the Extraverted/Introverted dichotomy originated from. So I had to dig very deep to get a grasp of what it meant.

After that, it was pretty hard to actually write a somewhat equally long paragraph for each subtype which encapsulated the core placement and the dichotomy. Whilst also trying to make the subtypes realistic to modern day life and having it be my own interpretation of them.

I often struggle to find what information is important and what can be left out, as well as feeling insecure about my ability to explain things clearly and accurately.

One of my biggest fears in this is not achieving what I wanted to achieve by making my own document, despite there already being one. Which is, among other things, to clear up confusion or misinformation about Psychosophy subtypes.

I did find myself really enjoying imagining how every subtype would act, and for most of them I have an assigned word that I describe them with (although some are quite unserious). In all honesty I also thoroughly enjoy feeling like a superexpert in some part of a system.

Even though PY subtypes don’t really matter when it comes down to it, I still find it a very interesting theory. And being able to recognize the traits or dichotomies in a placement through subtypes is great. Writing this doc did really help me understand psychosophy better, as I truly had to think about how the traits manifest in the types.

I would like to thank everyone who proofread, offered to help, gave their feedback or opinions (positive and negative), was excited, learned something or in general, took the time to open and read this document. A special thank you goes to Christina aka @typhoelogy on tiktok, for being my grammar police :)

Thank you for reading.
