Dear Parent, Guardian and Student,

This registration booklet contains information that will be valuable as you assist your son/daughter in planning his/her educational future. Included are course descriptions, graduation requirements, and departmental information to guide you in the process.  We encourage parents to take an active role in their children’s education and believe that communication between school and home is important. To that end we invite you to attend the many activities scheduled throughout the school year such as open house, financial aid night, extracurricular events and other monthly scheduled parent/community meetings. Watch for dates and times in the local newspaper.  Please be assured that we will make every effort to provide your son/daughter with a schedule that corresponds with his\her goals and plans for the future. Running Start Option with FVCC

Lincoln County Campus

Libby High School and the Lincoln County Campus of FVCC have recently agreed to offer Juniors and Seniors a unique educational opportunity. Juniors and Seniors of LHS can now earn college credit while enrolled in high school.  This program is designed to serve high school students who have the proven ability to face academic challenges and responsibilities. This program allows students the opportunity to earn college credit at an affordable cost.  Books and fees will be the obligation of the student and his/her parent as well as a discounted cost for tuition.  The Libby School District will cover most of the costs for tuition.

No credits earned within this program will count toward or satisfy high school core requirements, just electives. Decisions on schedule and class offerings will be made on a semester-by-semester basis. Check with the Guidance Department for the most current information. Applications for the program will be available in the counseling office of Libby High School and the Student Services Office of FVCC-LCC.


REQUIREMENTS

High School students, in order to graduate from Libby High School, must show evidence of satisfactory completion of approved credits during their four years of attendance.

BUSINESS/ COMPUTER EDUCATION COURSE OFFERINGS

Accounting I                                                                                                                 

Full Year: 1 Credit

Course Objectives: Accounting, like learning a foreign language, is “the language of business”.  Accounting professionals are the lifeblood of any organization.  Despite the tough economic times, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics projects that accountant and auditor employment will increase by 18% by 2016-faster than the average for all other occupations.  Accounting 1 is an introduction to financial accounting concepts.  A study of the accounting cycles of service organizations and merchandisers emphasizing the recording of business transactions, and the preparation of financial statements for such organizations.  Emphasis is also placed on the accounting principles relating to the measurement, valuation and reporting of assets, liabilities and equity, and related internal control considerations.

Accounting II

Accounting II is a comprehensive, one-year course designed to bring the real world of accounting at an advanced level into the classroom.  Students will experience the accounting cycle of service and merchandising businesses, bank activities, payroll, depreciation, etc.  The objective of this course is to provide an overview of accounting concepts, methods, and definitions that were learned in Accounting I, as well as simulation practice on the computer with higher accounting concepts.

Computerized Accounting

One Semester: ½ Credit

Computerized Accounting utilizes the computer in maintaining accounting reports, making management decisions, and processing common business applications with primary emphasis on a general ledger package.  Students will gain real life skills by learning to use QuickBooks and Peachtree.

Computer Applications

Computer applications is a one-year course covering the Microsoft Office Suite and is required for all Freshmen.  Currently the class is using Office 2010.  The class covers such programs as Microsoft Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), Access (database), PowerPoint (electronic presentations), and FrontPage (web design).  Keyboarding and editing skills are reinforced in daily assignments.  Communication and document processing skills are integrated throughout the course using workplace simulations.  Students will also have the opportunity to learn ethical/safety issues while learning about the Internet, E-mail, and Web search.

Computer Science

Computer Science is the study of the use of computers to process information.  This course will introduce computer structures and organization, computer networking, and computer programming.  Students should have a fundamental understanding of computer operations and have a desire to explore various intermediate to advanced functions of a computer.

Desktop Publishing

This one-semester course provides skill development in the electronic procedures of producing and editing publications.  Students will create, format, illustrate, design, edit/revise, and print publications.  Improved productivity of electronically produced newsletters, flyers, brochures, reports, advertising materials, pictures, and other publications are emphasized.  The course focuses on the implementation of Corel Design, In Design and Adobe Photoshop applications.

Documentary Filmmaking

One Semester: ½  Credit

Prerequisite(s): Computer Applications, Video Production

This one semester class is an advanced video production course.  Students learn to use programs such as Apple’s iLife 09 software suite, LiveType, and Final Cut Express.  The course focuses on further development of storylines and scripting. Video production and editing is done using Final Cut.  Advanced custom audio creation and editing is performed in GarageBand, for example creating and blending voice and music to create promos and voice overs.  Student’s final product will be a full length documentary film that effectively incorporates all storytelling and video production techniques.  Students also gain a general understanding of Apple computers and their operating environment.

 

Financial Planning

This course provides a hands-on approach with personal and business finance activities. Students will research and chart progress of stocks and funds through the Internet. Using real life simulation, students will learn about budgeting, personal finance, financial careers, investing, and other financial necessities.  Students will also review the monetary and credit systems in our economy.

Intro to Business

This course explores the foundations of business operations and prepares students for future educational opportunities and employment.  The class incorporates real business experiences with interactive business technology.  Coverage in this course includes economics, small-business management, social responsibility and business ethics, technology, entrepreneurship, financial operations, banking, credit, risk management, personal financial management, consumer decision, and insurance.  Students in this course will also research and keep informed of current business events and their effect on today’s business world.

Law and Justice

This course is designed to provide a basic overview of laws dealing with business and personal rights.  Emphasizing areas of business that students will come into contact with in everyday situations and in potential jobs. Students will be introduced to general civil and criminal law, contract law, property law, credit and debt regulations, employment rights, ethical issues, and commercial law. Students will experience legal issues through discussions of current events.  Students will participate in a mock trial.

 

Marketing                                                                                                                

One Semester, One-half Credit

A beginning course in marketing which stresses the marketing function’s contribution to any organization.  Standard business and non-traditional aspects of marketing are explored.  Subject matter includes economics, marketing foundations/functions with emphasis on selling, promotion, product/service management, pricing and distribution.  In addition, this course will explore human resource and leadership development.

Video Production

One Semester, ½  Credit

Prerequisite(s): Computer Applications  

This one semester class introduces the fundamentals of video production using Apple’s iLife 09 software suite.  The curriculum introduces pre-production skills such as storyboarding and planning camera angles.  Video production and editing is done using iMovie and custom audio creation and editing is performed in GarageBand.  Students also gain a general understanding of Apple computers and their operating environment.

Web Design

This class is designed to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts of Web page design and layout.  Students will learn basic HTML structure and formatting, Web page creation using the Macromedia Studio 8 Suite, and proper Web page layout.  Upon completion of the course, students will possess the knowledge and ability to ethically produce basic Web page creations.

 Culinary Arts                                                                                 

Semester: ½ Credit

The course covers the principles of basic food preparation, meal management, and safe use of small and large kitchen appliances, application of nutrition principles, and consumer skills.  Students will prepare a variety of foods including meats, breads, microwave cooking, and salads.

Independent Living (Home Economics)

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12 Second Semester

Prerequisite(s): None

A practical course for students who will be living on their own and have a limited background. Included in the course will be units on food preparation and meal service, consumer buying skills, housing choices, clothing, and basic sewing. Sweatshirt kits, which teach basic pattern layout and construction, are featured in this course., we will cover the following topics: citizenship, examining careers, getting and keeping a job, budgeting your paycheck, checking and savings accounts, credit and credit cards,, smart shopping for the myriad of things we buy (including, but not limited to groceries, clothing, professional services).

Textiles, Apparel and Quilting

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite(s): None

This course may be taken three times with increasing levels of difficulty required. This course features basic machine sewing and quilting techniques as well as the opportunity to create soft sculpture and furnishings. (IE: curtains).  A minimum of 2 (1 quilting and 1 clothing) projects are required.  Color, design, job opportunities and quilt history are covered. Fabric production and care, clothing selection and care, construction are also covered.  This class is for students who wish to expand beyond the regular clothing class and investigate and express their creativity with fabrics. Counts as Fine Arts Credit for College prep diploma.

This year long class develops leadership and teambuilding skills necessary for the work environment.  This class also focuses on civic and social activities, as well as personal growth.  Class officers attend a leadership conference in Helena in the month of October.  Any person who wishes to compete in the Career Development Conference in May must be involved in school banner, interview techniques, telephone techniques, and job applications to name a few.  This course also requires that students submit an electronic profile and job shadow.  Students taking this course and working during the school day may earn one-half credit per semester.

Applied Music

Applied Music is a class in which students are taught how to read music while exploring four different families of instruments and how their written music is notated.  Students will learn to play a brass instrument, percussion, guitar, and also learn how to read vocal music.  This course will also include elements or basic theory of music.  No public performances required.

Band (Concert)

Students will prepare music for public concerts, the Northwest Band Festival and the District and State Music Festivals during this course.  Students in Symphonic Band should have already played their band instruments for the equivalent of two or more school years. Students will need to have a band instrument at the very beginning of the course. Some instruments are available to be checked out from the school. Through the rehearsal and performance of music, the following skills and concepts will be taught at the high school level during both the marching band and symphonic band portions of the course.

Band (Jazz)

Students will prepare music for public concerts, dances, school and community events, the Northwest Band Festival, the District and State Music Festivals and Jazz Festivals during the course. The course will meet from 7:00 am to 8:00 am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There may also be some extra rehearsals and performance outside of the class time. Through rehearsals and performances, the following skills and concepts relating to jazz and other contemporary music styles will be taught at the high school level.

Concert Choir

Full Year: 1 Credit

Concert Choir is made up of those students who have good singing skills and some degree of sight reading skills. The choir sings relatively difficult music and strives for perfect performances. The choir gives at least four performances per year in addition to clinics, festivals and periodic trips.

History of Rock and Roll

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Levels 9-12

Prerequisite(s): None

This class explores the different types of music and musicians from 1940 through 2010.  Students will learn how Jazz music inspired Rock and Roll music by listening to and watching video clips of artists (bands) from each decade, listening to their music, reading and studying the bios of the musicians, and ending with a culminating project of a favorite Rock and Roll artist or band.

 

FINE ARTS

Drawing

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Levels: 9-12        

Prerequisite:  Art Fundamentals

This course will introduce a student to the various media (tools) available and how to use them in the creative process of drawing.  The class will focus on training the eye, application of the Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Value, Texture and Color) and Principles of Design (Emphasis, Balance, Harmony, Variety, Movement, Rhythm, Proportion and Unity), perspective, drawing the human figure, understanding the control of the light source.  This class is important in establishing self-confidence and one’s ability to produce stronger drawing and painting skills.

Painting

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Levels: 9-12

Prerequisite:  Art Fundamentals

This course will introduce a student to the tools and techniques used in painting.  The student will incorporate their knowledge of shape, value and color (studied in Art Fundamentals) with their newly developed skills.  They will develop further knowledge of Composition and presentation of their work.  Some understanding and skill development of matting their artwork will also occur in this class.

 

Photography

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Levels: 9-12

Prerequisite:  Art Fundamentals

This course will require the student to provide their own digital camera with battery, memory card and ability to download photos onto the school’s hard drive plus the instruction manual to the camera.

The students will learn some history of the development of the camera.  They will also learn the basic 35 mm camera functions to better understand how their digital camera operates.   Applying the Elements of Art and Principles of Design that they learned and practiced in Art Fundamentals, the students will begin to use that knowledge in a new artistic medium: Photography.  Students will be learning new terminology and will be exploring experiences - on campus.  They will be training their eye to see the world through a camera lens.  They will learn timing in capturing images as well as presentation of their work while understanding cropping and matting.  They may explore the possibilities of a career in photography.

 

Pottery I

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Levels: 9-12        

Prerequisite:  Art Fundamentals

A basic course in clay studies, includes both hand-built and wheel thrown Pottery.  Glazing, kiln loading and firing are discussed and put into application.  Coil, slab and combination hand-built techniques will be explored.  There may be a nominal fee for clay and special request glazes.  Basic tools are provided.

 

Pottery II

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Levels: 9-12        

Prerequisite:  Art Fundamentals and “B” or better in Pottery I

Students who have successfully completed Pottery I are eligible to advance into Pottery II.  Pottery II students may repeat and refine beginning assignments or complete new assignments that have been coordinated and pre-approved by the instructor.  Attention will be place on constantly improving skills and project difficulty levels.  Research into concepts, designs and techniques will be encouraged.  Pottery II students may be mixed in with the beginning Pottery classes but not vice versa.


FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE OFFERINGS

French I

Full Year: 1 Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite(s): None

This course will be focused primarily on understanding spoken and written French.  Emphasis will be on communication and not on grammar.  Early on in the course, students will be able to use many basic expressions to communicate and respond in the beautiful language that is modern French. French history and culture will also be presented so that students may appreciate the contributions of French culture to the modern world.

French II

Full Year: 1 Credit

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite(s): French I

Second year French will pick up where French I ended and continue on into more advanced spoken and written French. Emphasis will be on being able to express oneself comfortably on a variety of topics. Communication will be the focus, although a bit of grammar will be included to help appreciate rules of usage.

Spanish I (not offered at this time)

Grade Level: 9-12

The first year covers the basic skills of language learning through a communicative approach. The student is introduced to Spanish/Latin American culture through film, music, CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), etc. Emphasis on oral production and comprehension.

The second year continues the basic skill of language learning through a communicative approach. Students will use all four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) everyday in class.


HEALTH ENHANCEMENT COURSE OFFERINGS

Health Enhancement 9

Full Year: 1 Credit

Prerequisite(s): None

The primary goal of Libby's health enhancement curriculum is to expose students to as many of the components of the health enhancement state curriculum guide as time allows. There are ten areas in this guide: 1) mental and emotional health, 2) family and social health, 3) growth and development, 4) nutrition, 5) personal health and physical activity, 6) alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, 7) communicable and chronic diseases, 8) consumer and community health, 9) environmental health, 10) injury prevention and safety.

The ninth grade curriculum spends most of the time in lifetime and dual sport activity, and injury prevention and safety with the American Heart Basic Life Support curriculum. Fitness is emphasized. Communicable and chronic diseases are also covered at the ninth grade.

 

Health Enhancement 10

Full Year: 1 Credit

Prerequisite(s): None

Exposure to the state health enhancement guideline in the ten health area components continues in the tenth grade level. (See description under ninth grade) Lifetime team and dual sport skill continues to build from units introduced at the ninth grade and include tennis, golf, archery, orienteering, bowling, badminton, weight training, and table tennis; plus team sports floor hockey, volleyball, and soccer.

Health issues emphasized include nutrition, family and social health, alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, consumer health, physical fitness program design and communicable disease.

Students need to have successfully completed Health Enhancement 9 before registering for Health Enhancement 10.

Physical Conditioning

Full Year (1 Credit)

Grade Level: 11-12

 Prerequisite(s): None

Students will be exposed to the general principles of conditioning to include nutrition and anatomy. Specific activities will include: running, stretching, aerobic, weight training, and flexibility exercise.


LANGUAGE ARTS COURSE OFFERINGS

All students, ninth through twelfth, must pass English all four years in order to graduate.

-All ninth grade students are required to take Freshman English. Students should register for English 9 or Advanced English 9 per teacher recommendation. In addition, they may take certain English electives. (Refer to the descriptions.)

-All tenth grade students are required to take Sophomore English during the entire year. Students should register for English 10 or Advanced English 10 per teacher recommendation. In addition, they may take certain English electives. (Refer to the descriptions.)

-All eleventh grade students will be in Junior English. Students should register for English 11 or AP English Language and Composition by teacher recommendation. In addition, they may take any English electives.

-All twelfth grade students will be in Senior English during the entire year. Students should register for English 12 or AP English Literature and Composition per teacher recommendation. In addition, they may take any English electives.

English 9

Full Year: 1 Credit

Prerequisite(s): None 

This course will include the study of literature, grammar, writing and life/study skills. The literature study includes the short story, non-fiction selections, the novel, and drama. The writing units will involve composing complete sentences and paragraphs that follow one another in an orderly way. This course will also include a research paper done in conjunction with the physical science classes. Grammar study will present a general review and deal with specific grammatical areas.

Advanced English 9 **

Full Year: 1 Credit

Grade Level: 9

Prerequisite(s): “B” or better grade in 8th Grade English and/or teacher recommendation

**Honors Course

The advanced English section will present the same material as the standard section only on a greatly intensified level. Because of the more intensive level of study, the course will carry high grade points. Students who choose to take this course must be willing to put forth the extra effort and time that an intensified course requires.

English 10

Full Year: 1 Credit

Prerequisite(s): None 

This course is an exploration of world literature using the short story, the novel, poetry, and drama selections. Creative writing will be emphasized at this level. Skills in formal speaking and test taking are covered. Vocabulary is developed through use of Greek world clues. Grammatical skills are diagnosed, and appropriate skills are taught.

Advanced English 10 **

Full Year: 1 Credit

Grade Level: 10

Prerequisite(s): “B” or better grade in 9th Advanced English or B+/A- from Standard 9th English and/or teacher recommendation

**Honors Course

The advanced English section will present the same material as the standard sections only in greater depth. Because of the more intensive level of study, the course will carry high grade points. Additional literary selections are taught, and much more is expected of the advanced student in writing and speaking activities.

English 11

Full Year: 1 Credit

Grade Level: 11

Prerequisite(s): None  

This course chronologically surveys American literature. Persuasive essays, comparison and contrast, and research essay writing will be emphasized at this level. Skills such as public speaking, essay testing, critical listening, and the media will also be covered. Latin word clues are presented for vocabulary development. Specific needs in grammar will be assessed, and determined needs will be taught.

AP English Language and Composition **

Full Year: 1 Credit

Grade Level: 11

**Honors Course

Prerequisite(s):  “B” or better in Sophomore English and/or teacher recommendation

This year-long, one-credit course engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Because this class substitutes for English 11, American Literature provides the majority of reading material. Students will study Latin word clues and usage skills. Students prepare for the AP exam given in May of each year. AP provides a college-level English option for students interested in language, rhetoric, and analytic, persuasive, and expository writing. Because of the  more intense level of study, the course will carry high grade points.

English 12

Full Year: 1 Credit

Grade Level: 12

Prerequisite(s): None 

This course chronologically surveys British literature. Critical/analytical writing is emphasized at this level. Business- related writing skills and formal speaking are taught. Additional Latin word clues are presented for vocabulary development. All grammar concepts are comprehensively reviewed.

AP English Literature and Composition (AP Senior English)

Full Year:  1 Credit

Grade Level: 12

**Honors Course

Prerequisite(s):  “B” or better in Junior English and/or teacher recommendation

By using a chronological survey of British literature and supplementary readings, college-bound students will concentrate on composition (both imaginative and rhetorical) in the completion of study for the standardized AP exam given in May. Students will study Latin word clues for vocabulary development. Identification and use of literary terms in analysis of literary works require more attention than grammar review.

Mythology (Elective)

Semester: ½  Credit

Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite(s): None 

Mythology studies what myth is, what myth does, why it is important, how it develops and how it teaches the similarities among different cultures through various readings beginning with the Greeks and moving through Roman, Arthurian, Norse, Hindu, Egyptian, and others as time permits.

Yearbook: This year-long, one credit course is designed to teach students the aspects of journalism, through yearbook production, from an academic as well as a practical approach. Students will learn all aspects of yearbook production including brainstorming, journalistic theory and terminology, interviewing, writing, and designing pages. Students will learn desktop publishing programs and photography skills. Written recommendation of current English teacher and a completed application from Yearbook Staff adviser will be necessary for consideration.

MATHEMATICS COURSE OFFERINGS

Some important considerations to keep in mind are:

1. Many trade schools and the military are requiring Algebra I.

2. Advanced Algebra is required for a college prep diploma.

3. A student going to college should take some math class their senior year.

4. Three math credits are required for graduation. (3 full years) (3 full years for college prep must include Advanced Algebra)

5. Calculators are used extensively. Students purchase their own. (Algebra, Geometry and Applied use a scientific calculator and Algebra II, Trigonometry and Calculus use a Graphing Calculator). Generally, a student entering ninth grade should take Algebra I if their previous year's grades were above a “B” average.  They should take Pre-Algebra if their grades were poor. Some typical high school schedules are shown below, but many others are possible. Consult a math teacher or counselor.

Algebra I

This class stresses working with positive and negative numbers, solving equations, simplifying, multiplying, and factoring polynomials, simplifying radicals, solving word problems with equations, and graphing of points and lines. The studies of variables and abstract thinking prepare the student to take Geometry and Advanced Algebra. Study skills are needed for this class.

Applied Math

The focus of the class will be on life skills math. Topics will include common applications of math in formulas, business, percents, ratios, problem solving, graphing and plane geometry. Math content will be varied. Calculators and computers will be used.

** Honors Course**

This is a college preparatory class for students planning a career in engineering, mathematics, science, or pre-med. Exposure to topics covered in traditional first year calculus.  Several topics from Advanced Algebra will be studied in more depth including solving equations, complex numbers, logarithms, and analyzing functions. Other topics will include vectors, trigonometry, and limits. Students will make extensive use of technology and develop good study skills. Survivors of the class will be well prepared to succeed in college calculus.  (Integrals, derivatives, area and volume of 3-D solids).

Geometry

Geometry is a study of shapes like lines, points, planes, triangles, squares, etc., and their properties and relationships with one another. It is also a course in deductive thinking or logic. Plane Geometry

This is a course with all of the content of geometry without the theory component. Diploma after passing this course.

Pre-Algebra

The class begins with a review of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Skills needed for later studies in Algebra are covered and most applications are chosen from all areas of mathematics. Topics include positive and negative numbers; graphing, simplifying, and evaluating phrases; solving equations and word problems; the basic terms and symbols of geometry; measurements of perimeter, area, and volume; right triangles and statistics. This class is designed to prepare a student to take Algebra 1. Study skills are needed for this class.

Statistics/Trigonometry

Students will be introduced to topics that are used in many professional applications but are not exclusively for college mathematics major. Applications include data analysis and predicting. The material covered will include probability, permutations, statistical curve fitting, modeling, normal curve, and logarithms. Some trigonometry topics will include graphing functions SOHCAHTOA, the laws of sines and cosines, and identities.

Biology

The first half of this course focuses on the basic concepts of biology and fundamental life processes. The chemistry of life, energy processes, cell theory, reproduction, genetics, and evolution, are all explored. The second half of the course introduces classification, and then systematically investigates the various groups of living things including bacteria, protists, fungi, animals and plants. Laboratory work including dissection is an integral and required part of the course.

Advanced Biology

Full Year 1 Credit (Honors Course)

This course is designed for the student who desires additional preparation in biology and the process of science. The scientific method is a major focus, with students involved in long-term projects and research. A stream survey on Libby Creek will take place in the fall and a long term plant breeding project in the winter.  Other major topics include molecular genetics, botany, and the anatomy, physiology, and ecology of birds.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a quantitative science course in our college preparatory sequence. Chemistry uses laboratory studies to develop major chemical concepts. Chemistry students complete these studies; perform mathematical calculations based on laboratory data, and use chemical theories to explain real world phenomena. This course highlights the relationships between chemical science, technology and current societal issues. Topics covered include mole concepts, phase changes, periodicity, atomic and molecular structure, nuclear chemistry, chemical nomenclature, chemical stoichiometry, kinetic theory and the gas laws.

Advanced Chemistry

One Semester ½ Credit ( Honors Course)

Advanced Chemistry is a course for students planning to pursue a science career at the college level. Students in this course will complete the study of concepts not covered during the first course. Topics will include chemical equilibrium, solubility, acid/base chemistry and an introduction to organic chemistry.

Environmental Science

Environmental Science is the science course that meets the third year science requirement for non-college-prep diploma students.  Environmental Science provides in depth coverage of environmental Earth science concepts while helping students sharpen critical thinking and decision making skills.  This course serves as an introduction to and covers broad aspects of environmental science and environmental studies.  For all cases, the resulting environmental impacts are studied in detail.  Specifically, this course examines the risks associated with growth in a developing world; environmental impact of population growth on natural resources; mineral and resource extraction; water resource uses; and renewable and nonrenewable sources for power generation.

Human Anatomy and Physiology

This course is designed for students desiring specific preparation in the structure and function of the human body.  It is highly recommended for those seeking further education and employment in the medical/health related fields.  The course begins with animal development from a zygote to the fully formed body and a study of the tissues.  Body systems are then explored including skin, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, and reproductive systems.  Dissection of fetal pigs as well as other lab activities is required.

Physical Science

This class is a survey course in the areas of basic chemistry, elementary physics, and Earth science.  First semester topics include the nature of science, technology and society, energy, heat and waves, sound and light.  Second semester classes study matter, atomic structure and classification, radioactivity, chemical bonds and reactions, along with completing a science fair project.   Hands on laboratory experiences are an integral part of this course.  This course is required for ninth graders.

Physics

This class is for the college-bound senior who is planning a career in any science or engineering field. During the year students cover such topics as motion vectors, energy, mechanics, electricity, optics, and sound. This course treats the physical laws of nature in a quantitative nature.

Research Science

Research Science is designed to expand students’ abilities to think scientifically by conducting their own detailed research projects in the area of environmental health.  We will focus on real world issues of air quality including PM2.5, radon, carbon monoxide and asbestos in our own community of Libby.  Examples of environmental tragedies at home and abroad will be examined. This course is extremely helpful in preparation for the college experience in virtually any subject area requiring independent research.

Geography/ Montana History

Geography: An investigative multimedia course focusing on why people live and work where they do, and how they adapt to their environment. Broken into urban living, manufacturing and farming, cultural geography, political geography, and habitat and resources will be covered in this class.

Montana History:A survey of Montana from past to present beginning with an in-depth analysis of Montana's geography, Native Americans, and the arrival of non-Indians on the Montana landscape.  Other topics explored are exploration and fur trapping, gold rushes, cattle industry, hard-rock mining, lumbering, homesteading, and local heritage.  This is a required course for 9th grade students.

Global Studies

Full Year: 1 Credit (Required for CP Diploma)

Global Studies will offer a survey of western civilization for the first semester. Second semester will examine contemporary issues in the world. A special emphasis will be placed on Asian history and cultures, and current Soviet-US relations. A short paper will be required each semester, along with readings and geography work.

Holocaust

Semester: ½ Credit (Elective)

This course will first study the topic of hatred and specifically the “Longest Hatred” of Jews.  A thousand years of stereotyping, scapegoating, prejudice, discrimination and persecution.  This leads to the changes German Jews dealt with in the 1920’s and 1930’s.  Well entrenched into German society, the lives of Jews changed as neighbors were now enemies, the anti-semitic propaganda expanded, and the push for the “perfect” German race started.  From prejudice to discrimination and movement into ghettos to the concentration camps, the Nazi lie machine was put into full force to accomplish the “Final Solution” for Jews and other groups identified as undesirable.  Instruction will explore a very personal look at the conditions these groups endured during World War II.  Students will embark on a deeply psychological look at the motivation of intimidation, submissiveness, apathy and compassion.  There is a final study on the limits and possibilities of forgiveness.  Ultimately, the course will study how this is a story of hope for humanity.  History, geography, psychology and sociology are the Social Sciences covered in this comprehensive look at the shocking events we call the Holocaust.

Psychology

The objective of psychology is to introduce the student to the huge field of psychology and to help them understand their role in the world of biological, social, and environmental psychology.  This course will offer students an opportunity to learn more about themselves in areas of personality, learning, growth and development, adjustment, and mental illness. Students will have an understanding of how personality is formed and changed, understand theories of learning and methods for efficient studying, and become aware of problems and causes of mental illness.

Senior Government

First semester will deal with the study of national, state, and local government. Students will participate in mock legislature and the study of basic economic concepts along with the study of taxation and the individual's role as a taxpayer. The concluding portion of the course will deal with the study of comparative political systems.

**Honors Course**

A well-designed AP course in US Government and Politics will give students an analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. This course includes both the study of general concepts used to interpret US politics and the analysis of specific examples. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute US politics. While there is no single approach that an AP United States Government and Politics course must follow, students should become acquainted with the variety of theoretical perspectives and explanations for various behaviors and outcomes. Certain topics are usually covered in all college courses. The following is a discussion of these topics and some questions that should be explored in the course.

Students will be preparing for the College Board AP exam.

Sociology and Economics

Sociology is the study of man in his environment. In this course, we will study human beings as they exist and react in society. How do our surroundings affect us as we grow through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood? Where does the family fit into this process? Are we affected by poverty and crime?

Economics - This is a macro-level study of Economics. Students will be exposed to the concepts of supply and demand, opportunity costs and the factors of production. A study of business types (including Libby's) will also occur. We will study the Stock Market and participate in a Stock Market game. Major elements of economics at a macro level will be studied and the class grade is determined by an accumulation of "Econ" bucks the students receive for their work. Come and "earn" a grade!

U.S. History

This course is required for graduation and is offered at the 11th grade level. The course emphasizes the following eras of American History:

**Honors Class**

AP U.S. history is a college-level course. Its format follows that of survey classes in many colleges and universities. College credit may be obtained if a student scores well on the AP exam given in May. The course emphasizes a critical approach to the study of history. Historiography or the study of differing viewpoints of major historians is studied in great depth. The use of critical thinking skills plus the application of comprehensive persuasive writing are an integral part of this study of United States History.


TECHNOLOGY/ INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION COURSE OFFERINGS

Technology and Industrial education prepares a student for entrance into an occupational trade or for further training in a vocational/technical center, a community college, or a university.

Auto Technology I (currently not offered)

Semester: ½  credit.

Prerequisite(s): None

A beginning course for students who wish to learn automotive systems and services. Auto units such as tune-up, braking systems, suspension systems, working principles, and maintenance will be studied. Students will have an opportunity to work on an automobile, but their work will be limited to teaching units. Students will work in groups and will be allowed one auto stall per group. Approximately 30% of class time will be devoted to theory. Students are to provide work clothes.

Autos Technology II (currently not offered)

One Semester, One half credit.

Auto II is an advanced automotive class intended for students who would like to learn about computer systems, electrical systems and transmissions. Units to be covered include engine rebuilding, advanced tune-up, and diagnostic testing.  Auto II will have a limited enrollment of 20 students.

Basic Car Care

One Semester: ½  Credit

Prerequisite(s): None

An introduction to the automobile covering basic operation, systems service and maintenance, basic repair, and parts replacement. Basic car care is open only to students who have a driver's license and access to an automobile to work on. This course is an introductory course.

Drafting I/ Auto Cad

Drafting: A beginning course recommended for grades 9 and 10, which covers a wide range of drafting techniques and procedures. Students will learn: 1) to develop working drawings of shop projects, 2) the proper use of board drafting instruments and machines, 3) to draw and read multi-view drawings, 4) to sketch, 5) to

develop layouts and patterns, and 6) to read shop drawings. Some computer drafting will be included.

Auto Cad:                                                                                                                                                                                        AutoCad is a beginning course which includes the basic principles of drafting on a computer.  In AutoCad, students will learn how to make orthographic (plan view) and isometrics (3D view) for simple and complex objects.  Students will also design house plans using the 3D Home Architect program.  Must have had Drafting

Molten Metals

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12 Second Semester

Prerequisite(s): None

A beginning course which covers metal casting and machine shop. This class is designed to provide first time experiences in metalworking, and may help you decide on an occupation. Students will be working with molten metal and will be operating the metal lathe, milling machine, surface grinder, metal shaper, drill press, and cut-off machines.

Sheet Metals

Sheet Metals is an introductory metal working class consisting of sheet metal work. Basic skills in blueprint reading, planning, layout, cutting, bending, and assembly will be developed. It is recommended that Molten Metals be taken one semester and Sheet Metals be taken one semester.

Small Engines

A beginning course for students who wish to learn auto mechanics. Auto units such as tune-up, working principles, and maintenance will be studied. Welding I

A general review of various welding processes with practical instruction in the development of specific welding skills. Both arc and acetylene theory and practice will be included. Safe use of all welding equipment will be stressed. Welding is a life skill course and is designed for the student who may later need to use welding in life. Students are required to furnish welder’s gloves, cotton work clothes, and a welder’s cap.

Welding II

Prerequisite(s): Welding I

A continuation of Welding I with more advanced welding techniques and practice. Welding will include arc, oxy-acetylene, tungsten-inert-gas (TIG), gas-metal arc (MIG), and cutting with plasma arc and duplicating machines. A welding project is required and must have instructor approval. You will be required to have welder’s gloves, cotton work clothes, and a welder’s cap.

Woods  I                                                                                           

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite(s): None                                                               

A woodworking course designed to teach the proper use of hand tools and power machinery to construct individual or group projects from a plan or working drawing. Safety, blueprint reading, and skill development in using the equipment is emphasized. Such units as layout, shaping, turning, and wood finishing are included. A group project and an individual project will be required.

 

Woods II

This is an advanced woodworking class with emphasis on advanced projects and cabinet making. Woods II is only open to those students who have successfully completed Woods Technology I.

Academic Time

This 35 minute time slot in our day is set aside for all students to use as ACADEMIC study time.  Students are required to bring work with them to class and be prepared to study.  Grades will be given on the basis of work ethic and any required activities that are assigned.  If students are caught up with their homework, in all their classes, they must bring a required reading book from one of their classes to stay busy and not be disruptive, (this might mean reading and outlining chapters that they are currently studying or checking through PASS on their grades).

Independent Study

Semester: ½  Credit (Elective)

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite(s): Teacher/Administrative Approval

A prerequisite for Independent Study is a student who is capable of independent work and who has a curiosity about a topic that he or she would like to pursue. Topics may be school-based (library study, science research, etc.) or non-school-based (community, science, social study, etc.) Procedures: the student shall develop a plan of study and at the beginning of a semester; attempt to locate a teacher who will agree to be the supervisor. The supervising teacher may modify his plan of study, help with it through the semester, and evaluate progress. It must fit into the student and teacher’s schedule and be administratively approved.. The student must be enrolled in the required number of courses in addition to Independent Study. No advanced registration for this course may be made.

Library Aide

Semester: ¼  Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite(s): Teacher Approval

Any student wishing to assist in the library may apply in person to the librarian. There will be only one aide each period. A Pass/Fail grade and credit will be given. Aides will be instructed in their duties and responsibilities, which will include the following: 1) To be able to carry out circulation procedures accurately and neatly. This includes checking materials in and out, working with passes, and other clerical duties. 2) To be willing to learn and complete other assigned tasks as directed. This includes filing, shelf reading, shelving books, and library organization. 3) To be able to conduct themselves in a friendly, but businesslike manner with the students and faculty. This also includes setting a good example of how to act in the library center as well as watching for developing problems. 4) To give assistance to students and faculty within the limits of their knowledge. This includes knowing the general layout of the library and acting as a guide. 5) To direct students and faculty to the librarian or secretary for further assistance.

Office Aide

Any student wishing to assist in the Front Office must apply in person to the Front Office Secretaries or the Assistant Principal. Student Office Aides will earn one-quarter credit per semester and be graded on a pass/fail basis. Aides will be instructed in their duties and responsibilities which include: 1 ) To be able to carry out clerical tasks as directed accurately and neatly. This includes filing, record keeping, delivering messages and other routine office tasks. 2) To be able to conduct oneself and to work with students and faculty in a businesslike, but friendly and helpful manner. 3) To answer the phone in a businesslike manner, knowing how to handle all incoming calls. This includes transferring the call, paging, and taking accurate messages. 4) To give assistance to students, staff and the public within limits of their knowledge and to direct them to the secretaries, counselors or the Assistant Principal for further assistance. 5) To uphold the policies of Libby Senior High School and set a good example to other students.

Teacher Aide

The student who wishes to enroll in an aide will be required to engage in a variety of activities and will be directly responsible to their sponsor teacher. In general, aides will be expected to fulfill the following qualifications: 1) be willing to learn and complete, accurately and neatly, assigned tasks as directed; 2) to conduct themselves in a friendly and businesslike manner with students and faculty. (Only 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students will be eligible to be an aide in other schools in the district.)

Traffic Education

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: Must be 14 ½ (class can only handel 18 students on an “oldest to youngest basis”)

This is a two-part course consisting of classroom instruction and “on street” driving instruction. The classroom part of the course is designed to make students familiar with correct driving procedures, driving regulations, and other things that affect driving, such as attitudes and emotions. The “on street” part of the course allows the students to put the procedures they learn in the classroom into actual practice. This part of the course, consisting of 18 hours, is completed outside regular school hours. Students should know that they may be required to make some concessions and sacrifices in order to complete the “on street” instruction.   Requirements: Students taking Traffic Education ordinarily must be 14 ½  years old to qualify for the course.  Class roster is made up from oldest to youngest students.

 


INTERVENTION CLASSES

Libby High School is an RTI School (RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION). We have 3 tiers of support for kids who struggle academically and need extra help:

-Tier I interventions are for the majority of our student body.  These interventions are usually based on our after school program (homework helper & math tutoring) as well as our Academic Time that every student has each day.

Academic Intervention (Tier II)

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: Teacher/Administrative Approval

The students learn how to be more critical learners and work on becoming more actively involved in their learning while building basic skills.  We work on reading skills needed to read the different textbooks, the students work to build their vocabulary and learn how to figure out the meanings of new words using the clues in the text, basic math skills are reviewed if that is an area of concern, and students work on improving their writing.  After we work on specific skills during the first part of the class they get time to get help on assignments, they are struggling with, from other classes.

Behavior Intervention (Tier II)

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: Teacher/Administrative Approval

 The students focus on the behaviors that are impeding their ability to be successful in the classroom.  We use the 7 Habits of Successful Teens, Being a Better Student, School Connect, and Who Moved My Cheese for Teens as our curriculum.  The students learn to be more in control of their actions, learn to advocate for themselves in an appropriate manner, learn to communicate with adults and their peers in a more positive way, work on study skills, set goals, and most importantly learn to take responsibility for their actions by making choices that are well thought out and proactive rather than making quick, reactionary decisions.

 

Core Skills and Study Skills (Tier II)

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: Teacher/Administrative Approval

Students learn how to be better students so that they can do well in the classroom.

They learn reading strategies, learn how to be better note takers, work on becoming more organized (lockers, notebooks), learn time management, test taking strategies are reviewed, student learn to use their strengths (learning style) and are provided strategies to help them if they are in a class that requires a different learning style.  The students also learn to self advocate and communicate with their teachers.

 

HS English Intervention (Tier III)

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: Teacher/Administrative Approval

Students work on improving their reading and writing skills.  An adapted version of the core English curriculum is used so that the students are reading and writing based on their level of performance using.  The students will also use Reading Plus, a computer program, that works on their vocabulary development and reading comprehension. They are also exposed to Real World material in order to become proficient at reading directions, understanding labels, following directions on a map, filling out forms properly, following a recipe, writing a formal letter, completing a resume and application, etc…

HS Math Intervention (Tier II)

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: Teacher/Administrative Approval

Students work on basic math skills the first 20 minutes of class.  After that they are given help with daily math assignments, reviewing for a quiz/test,  or practicing problems together and walking through the steps of solving multi-step problems.

 

HS Math Intervention (Tier III)

Semester: ½ Credit

Grade Level: 9-12

Prerequisite: Teacher/Administrative Approval

Student work to improve their basic math skills including adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing using rational numbers.  They use Catch Up math or Aleks which are both computer programs that adapt to the student’s abilities.  They also work on real life math skills with money, telling time, measuring, ect….

  Communication arts is a full year writing and grammar program.  Students will review the 8 parts of speech and must already possess the basic writing skills of sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling and grammar. With strong basic writing skills, students will advance to intermediate-advanced skills in writing varied sentence structures within a composition.  Major writing assignments include: expository, narrative, descriptive, research, argumentative, poetry, and letter writing.  This curriculum follows the guidelines for the Common Core Standards.

7th Grade  Geography

Description:..This course is dedicated to a study of the world around us. The students will use maps, globes  and other geographic tools to acquire and process geographical information. They will learn the five  themes of geography:   location,  place, human/environment interaction,  movement , and regions.  They also will  explore the six essential elements : the world in spatial terms,    places & regions ,  physical systems , human systems , environment & society , and  the uses of geography.

   This course will use the 7th grade Prentice-Hall Literature text covering a variety of genres: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and the oral tradition. Students will be taught concepts and strategies in connection with the text and be able to apply them to other selections in reading and other core classes. Selections will focus also on vocabulary. Students will read independently, with a partner, or practice listening skills.  Writing in response to literature is required on all selection tests and benchmarks. Students’ reading levels are closely monitor with the iSIP test.  This curriculum follows the guidelines for the Common Core Standards.

7th Grade Science

    In this course students will study the nature of science.  Students will learn the scientific method and how to use the method to solve problems.  Students will learn about measurement and how to use measurement to make science more exact.  Students will learn about matter, the make up of and how matter changes.  Students will study different solutions and how to identify solutions.  Students will study motion, learning about speed, acceleration, and velocity.  2nd quarter will be devoted to biology.  Students will study the cell and how it is the key to life.  Students will study cell and organism reproduction.  The second quarter will conclude  with a look at genetics.  3rd quarter will be a study in human anatomy.  Students will study different body systems and learn how the human body works.  4th quarter will be a study of botany for the first 4 weeks.  The year will conclude with a unit on weather, and the ecology of the Earth.

The class begins with a review of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Skills needed for later studies in algebra are covered and most applications are chosen from all areas of mathematics. Topics include positive and negative numbers; graphing, simplifying, and evaluating phrases; solving equations and word problems; the basic terms and symbols of geometry; measurements of perimeter, area, and volume; right triangles and statistics. This class is designed to prepare a student to take Algebra 1. Study skills are needed for this class.

Middle School Finance

This class introduces students to the world of finance.  The will be introduced to checking and savings accounts, credit cards, paychecks, the Federal Reserve, advertising techniques, comparison shopping, and budgeting.  This is done through a variety of activities, including lectures, group activities, note taking, and Google Docs.

7th Tech Tools

This class focuses on keyboarding and Internet use.  Students spend a quarter of each class period keyboarding.  They will learn to discern between reliable and unreliable information found on the Internet.  Time will also be spent on copyright, Internet Safety, and research.  Students will be introduced to handheld devices, such as iPads.  

8th Tech Tools

This course focuses on the continuation of keyboarding skills along with the development of general computer skills. Students develop Microsoft Word formatting skills by editing a childrens story book. The course also includes a unit in Microsoft Excel where the students buy and sell stocks and track their progress with formulas and charts. The course ends with the students working in small groups to create an anti-drug radio ad using Apple’s GarageBand.

8th Grade Art Exploratory

Art Exploratory is a continuation of 7th Grade Art. In this class you will learn additional art fundamental skills and techniques.  You will also learn about art history and the role of the artist.  Projects allow for creativity and expressing yourself through artwork.  A wide variety of art mediums will be used.

Advanced Art allows students to learn more about art and be introduced to more types of art mediums. Students will be encourage to develop their personal artistic style. Woods Exploratory

A beginning woodworking class designed to be hands-on and project based.   The student will learn basic woodworking by using hand tools and some power equipment.   An emphasizes will be placed on safety.  


INTERVENTION CLASSES

Libby Middle School is an RTI School (RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION). We have 3 tiers of support for kids who struggle academically and need extra help:

-Tier 1 interventions are for the majority of our student body.  These interventions are usually based on our after school program (homework helper & math tutoring) as well as our Academic Time that every student has built into their day.

This course is designed for students who have struggled in regular math classes. It is designed to work at a slower pace with more individualized assistance for those who need it. This intervention course is designed to accompany the MS Math course as support and clarification for students who need additional assistance and score in the Tier 2 range on their Math ISIPS or have failed at least one quarter of MS Math.  This course supplements the MS Math Text and provides lessons and class work for students who are missing key basic facts in their math knowledge base.  Also used with this intervention is the Catch-Up Math Program online.

Tier 3 Communication Arts

This course is designed to be taught in conjunction with Tier 3 Reading and to provide skills based learning to students who are behind in their grammar/punctuation/sentence structure/writing skills by at least two years or more.  These students would have scored in the Tier 3 level in Reading on their ISIP scores.  This course provides intensive intervention in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and writing skills.  The goal for most students in this class is to bring up their ISIP and Benchmark scores in order to attend Grade Level Communication Arts with a support booster the following year.

MS Life Skills (Tier 3)

This intervention is provided to students who have specific study needs that are not met by any other course.  It is a one on one period of time with a teacher to work on specific skills needed to become a successful student.  It also provides tutoring for core classes as needed in a very small group environment.  (Only offered if necessary in any given semester).This intervention is provided to students who show a strong need for Life Skill Training.  The curriculum for this intervention includes, but is not limited to Circles 1 and 2, Think Social!, Communication Skills, Overcoming Obstacles, and The 10 Principles of Positive Behavior.  Students in this class will learn communication body language, how to engage a person in conversation, how to track the speaker, how to be a good audience, how to ask questions appropriately, how to identify the people in their lives (self, family, close friends, acquaintances, public servants, and strangers) and communicate with those individuals appropriately, how to identify themselves in an emergency situation, who to give personal information to and who not to, how read a newspaper, respond to an ad, look up a number in the yellow pages, call and ask for a service, in addition to other life skills needed on an individual basis.

Tier 3 Middle School Math

This is an intense intervention course for students who are at least two years or more below grade level in Math and have scores in the Tier 3 range in the ISIP Math Test and the Math Benchmarks.  The curriculum used for this class is the Triumphs 7th and 8th grade Math Program and the Catch-Up Math Program online.  Students who are below the Triumphs level in Math are using the direct instruction Corrective Math Program.  The goal for most students in this class is to bring up their ISIP and Benchmark scores in order to attend Grade Level MS Math with math booster the following year.

Tier 3 Reading

Grade Level: 7 - 8

This course is designed to be taught in conjunction with Tier 3 Communication Arts and to provide skills based learning to students who are behind in their reading skills by at least two years or more.  These students would have scored in the Tier 3 level in Reading on their ISIP scores.  This course provides intensive intervention in Reading, word parts, prefixes, suffixes, root word vocabulary, oral reading, reading comprehension, main idea, supporting statements and summarizing.  The goal for most students in this class is to bring up their ISIP and Benchmark scores in order to attend Grade Level Reading with a support booster the following year.  Also used in this course is Reading Plus Online.
