2014 Position Descriptions

The Homestead at Seven Arrows is a small diversified working farm in partnership with Seven Arrows East, a yoga retreat center on the Navesink River in Locust, NJ. Headed by former urban farmer, beekeeper and author Meg Paska, the farm boasts a varied but co-operative assortment of livestock and crops, all of which lend to the productivity and success of the other.  The farm and retreat aim to provide an environment of learning and support to those seeking a lifestyle that integrates social, spiritual and agricultural engagement.

We are currently seeking apprentices for Autumn 2013 and Spring 2014 for the following unpaid positions:

Garden Apprentice (3 Positions for Spring 2014):

Garden apprentices positions start March 15th and continue until October 15th. During this time frame, participants will learn about sustainable and intensive market vegetable production by the season from starting seedlings  to maintenance, trellising, season extension and harvesting practices. Apprentices should feel confident in their ability to start and manage a small market garden independently by the seasons end. Applicants must have full physical mobility and be capable of lifting 50lbs or more.

Position is for 10-15 hours a week. Days are mostly flexible but  must be in shifts of 5 hours or more, with at least two Wednesday shift a month for CSA Harvest . Apprentices will receive a full CSA share of the available produce being grown at the farm during the time of their involvement.. Staff meals are included. Lodging is not available at this time.

Livestock Apprentice  (2 Positions for Spring 2014):

There is a diverse group of livestock currently living at the farm: dairy goats, ducks, heritage breed turkeys and egg-laying hens, rabbits, livestock guardian dogs and honeybees. Applicants for this position should be ready and able to get up close and personal with all of them. From daily care (milking, grooming, collecting eggs, feeding and watering) to weekly duties such as mucking out stalls, trimming hooves and claws, and health inspections, even the occasional cull, apprentices are expected to be able to tackle any of the jobs without hesitation.  This position requires that the apprentice has an inherent respect for living things and aims to create an environment for  farm animals to thrive and demonstrate their natural behavior.

Positions for Spring begin February 15th and continue until  August 15th. Applicants are expected to commit to 10-15  hours weekly in 5+ hour shifts and must be able  bodied and capable of lifting  50 lbs or more. Days are mostly flexible but  must be in shifts of 5 hours or more, with at least two Wednesday shift a month for CSA Harvest.

Apprentices will receive a full CSA share of the available produce being grown at the farm during the time of their involvement.. Staff meals are included. Lodging is not available at this time.

Infrastructure Apprentice (2 Positions for Spring 2014):

Infrastructure apprentices will work alongside garden and livestock apprentices to make improvements to and create functional structures for livestock, garden and composting. This is included, but not limited to fence construction and repair, outbuilding improvement and repair, and construction of temporary animal housing, Applicants must have 2-3 years of carpentry experience.

Positions for Spring begin February 15th and continue until  August 15th. Applicants are expected to commit to 10-15  hours weekly in 5+ hour shifts and must be able  bodied and capable of lifting  50 lbs or more. Days are mostly flexible but  must be in shifts of 5 hours or more, with at least two Wednesday shift a month for CSA Harvest.

Floral Apprentice (2 positions Spring 2014):

Seven Arrows will be partnering with a New York City-based floral designer in 2014. Apprentices will work alongside the designer to select cultivars, prep garden beds, plant and maintain and create arrangements from cultivated and foraged  flowers.  Apprentices will also assist in the management of the flower CSA and work with the retreat manager to create seasonal bouquets for the retreat house.

Positions for Spring begin February 15th and continue until Nov 15th. Applicants are expected to commit to 10-15 hours weekly in 5+ hour shifts and must be able  bodied and capable of lifting  50 lbs or more.  Days are mostly flexible but  must be in shifts of 5 hours or more, with at least two Wednesday shift a month for CSA Harvest.

Apprentices will receive a full CSA share of the available produce being grown at the farm during the time of their involvement. Staff meals are included. Lodging is not available at this time.
