23rd. June, 1931.
Dear Sirs,
With reference to the cheque for £78.15.0. which Mr. P.A. de Laszlo forwarded to you on October 28th last,[1] being commission on a “head and shoulders” portrait which he painted of Mrs. Wadia [10061], of Grosvenor House, he desires me to inform you that it was subsequently discovered that Mrs. Wadia was introduced to him some time before his Exhibition took place at your Galleries[2] by a friend who had been already painted by him, and that the cheque in question was sent to you in error.
Shortly after the cheque was sent to you Mr. de Laszlo was in communication with Mrs. F.J. Nettlefold regarding painting her portrait [10330], and did not write to you concerning the commission paid on Mrs. Wadia’s portrait as he thought it could be adjusted when settlement was being made for Mrs. Nettlefold’s. He therefore wishes me to forward to you the enclosed cheque of £47.5.0. being 15% commission on three hundred guineas which is the difference between the honorarium of 500 guineas for Mrs. Wadia’s portrait and that of 800 guineas for Mrs. Nettlefold.
Mr. de Laszlo desires me to enclose for your perusal two letters in original in substantiation of the fact mentioned above, and which kindly return by the bearer of this letter.
Yours faithfully,
Secretary.
