The children will learn to identify steps in the life cycle of of a plant.

 

What do you think you would find inside the fruit? 

  1. Provide children with various types of fruit.
  2. Ask: What do you think you will find inside the fruits?
  3. Remove the seeds, wash and dry them.
  4. Have the children examine the seeds using a hand lens.
  5. Divide the class into groups.
  6. Have the groups sort the seeds into different groups.
  7. Have each group sort the seeds by different categories.
  8. Display Flip Chart page 18.
  9. Have the children answer the following questions: Which pictures shows a seed? Where would you put the seed so it will grow? (In soil) What does the seed turns into once it begins to grow? (Seedling) Why do you think this plant is called a seedling? How doe the plant changes when is fully grown? In addition to leaves, what else appears on the vine? If you cut open If you cut open this ripe pumpkin, what do you think you would find inside? (Seeds)
  10. Reinforce the word seeds, seedling, fruit, and soil by displaying a picture of each object.
  11. Have the children point to each picture of each object.

  1. Take the children on a short walk around the school grounds.
  2. Have the children observe different plants in the environment and talk how each looks.
  3. Show examples of shrubs, trees, grasses, and flowers.
  4. Have the children draw a picture of one of the plant she or she saw.
  5. Display the children’s pictures as a basis for discussing how the plants they saw were alike and different.
  6. Ask: Can you name some of the plants we saw? What uses do plants have? How are they alike and different?
