De László had previously painted Baron Bruno in 1911 [6945] and again in 1917 [6972], when he also made a portrait bust of him [6978], later cast in bronze [7028]. It would seem that the present portrait was commissioned especially for the family bank J. Henry Schröder & Co. in 1926, the year that Baron Bruno’s son, Helmut, became a partner. Although remaining senior partner, from then on Baron Bruno played a less active role in the activities of the firm.
