Happy Thursday! Today, I share with you some wonderful news from our Board meeting last night. The leadership team and our teacher calendar committee have been working hard with me to have our calendars in advance for you. Last night, our Board approved our 2018-2019 calendar and approving requests for small changes to our 2017-2018 calendar. Please click 2017-2018 and/or 2018-2019 for full versions.
While we work diligently to align as much as we can with the DCSD calendar and our mission, we must also be cognizant of the compulsory school attendance law in Colorado. As such, we have altered our calendar for 2017-2018 school year in the following ways:
For the calendar year 2018-2019, we decided to follow the same pattern as the 2017-2018 calendar for consistency. We want to thank the teacher committee and school leaders for their input in making this happen as well as thank our Board for approving the calendars.
Wishing you a wonderful 4-day weekend with friends and family.
All the best,
“No school can work well for children if parents and teachers do not act in partnership on behalf of the children’s best interests.”

Update Household Address
Before we break for summer, please check your address in Parent Portal and make sure it is accurate. Whether you’ve recently moved or need to add a second household, we require proof of residency to make these changes. Please check our IC Parent Portal page on the website for more information on required documents.
New Website Tips
Our last month of school will be dedicated to mapping out our 2017-2018 school communications strategy. This summer we will be updating our SkyView website, calendars, google classrooms and parent app.
We want to thank everyone for their patience, support and feedback this school year. We continue to work towards a goal of creating a streamlined communication solution for our families – simplifying the amount of information we share, when and how we share it.
If you have any suggestions you’d like to submit to our planning team, please email Jennifer Larson at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll continue working with her team on our school communications plan for next year.
Assessment & Testing - Assessment Update
Students in grades 3-9 will need to bring headphones for PARCC testing. The PARCC English/Language Arts test contains video and audio segments on the test. Each student testing will need to bring a set headphones from home in order to hear these segments. Headphones may be brought to school any time before April 3. SkyView does not have the number of headphones needed for those students testing at one time. Please send in a pair with your child for this testing. Thank you!
We encourage parents to have their students take any state or district assessments. Each student/parent who chooses to opt out of an assessment, not only negatively impacts our school ranking but also deprives us of an important piece of data that we can use to improve student achievement. Consequently, we are asking all families to take our testing very seriously and to commit to our school improvement process by participating in each assessment that we administer. The opt out process can be found on our school website, skyviewacademy.org under the State Mandated Testing tab at the bottom of the page. If you have any questions concerning testing or opting out, please contact Paula Harrison email@example.com.
Here is a link to the CDE parent resource page. There is helpful information for parents concerning the PARCC and CMAS testing. http://www.cde.state.co.us/communications/resourcesforparents

Traffic, Hospitality, Events, Volunteering and More...
National Volunteer Week
It takes a special kind of heart and work ethic to be the volunteers that you all have been for us. Thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do for our kiddos here at SkyView Academy! We wish you a wonderful week of happiness, appreciation, wellness, and love.
Announcing New Ways To Earn Volunteer Hours
I am pleased to announce TWO new ways to earn SVA volunteer hours:
Going forward as well as continuing into next school year, starting Monday, April 24th, a volunteer can earn DOUBLE hours for ANY lunch or recess shift!!!
1 hour for lunch or recess = 2 hours
These shifts are vital to the safety of our children and a great help to our staff. They occur daily with several spots needing to be filled. We realize the time volunteers are giving during the middle of the day is often difficult and we want to say how appreciative we are for your commitment to the lunch and recess shifts.
Additionally, another way to earn volunteer hours is to help watch the younger children of a parent who is volunteering. We understand we have many young families who have multiple smaller siblings at home. Finding childcare to come and volunteer is most often not easy during the day. If you have a friend who is at SVA volunteering for something and you babysit their smaller children, you now can ALSO earn the same amount of hours as your friend that volunteered.
Parent A goes on a field trip for 4 hours & earns 4 volunteer hours = Parent B (babysitting Parent A's littles) earns 4 volunteer hours
Parent A volunteers for a lunch shift for 1 hour & earns 2 volunteer hours = Parent B (babysitting Parent A's littles) earns 2 volunteer hours
Parent A volunteers to help a classroom for 1 hour & earns 1 volunteer hour = Parent B (babysitting Parent A's littles) earns 1 volunteer hour
Teacher Appreciation Week May 1-5th
Next week is Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! We have a few things planned to honor our
wonderful teachers and staff, who do an amazing job every day to make SkyView such an awesome school! (please note that these activities are optional, and students may participate if they choose)
Monday – Students bring a single flower for each teacher
Tuesday - Students bring a note for their teacher. We are sending a template home in Thursday folders
this week, but your student may create his/her own card to honor their teacher(s). The template can
also be found here. Thank You Template
Wednesday – Students bring a gift card (any amount! A $5 gift card would be much appreciated!)
Thursday – Open day for students to be creative in honoring their teachers. The hospitality committee will deliver a
small surprise to teachers and staff
Friday – Teachers and staff will receive a treat to close this amazing week on a sweet note! Please watch for the volunteer opportunity to help!
Elementary Parent Connection
We've had a great response from Elementary (Pre-K through 5th) parents to the "Parent Connection." If you have not already 'opted-in' by e-mailing your grade's Parent Connection lead, please email Katie Bishop @ email@example.com with your child's name, grade and teacher. Katie will add you to your grade's Parent Connection group so that you can be included in events over the summer. Since we are a “commuter” school, often times it is difficult to get to know other parents so we want to make it easier. This is also a great way to plan playdates, find sports teams, camps, etc. to connect kids outside of school. Thank you!
There’s An App For That!!!!
Our volunteer website, Track It Forward has an App you can download to track your hours. It is fairly basic and only allows you to log your hours, however, it might be an easier way for you to quickly log your time before you forget. You will still need to log on to the Track It Forward website to view volunteer spots or see your personal profile as well as your cumulative hours. Make sure you are logging your hours as we get closer and closer to the end of the year.
