This is a reading and reflection assignment. This reading is 10 pages long. It’s more practical and classroom-oriented than last week’s reading.

The paper is:

Doering, A., & Veletsianos, G. (2008). An investigation of the use of real-time, authentic geospatial data in the K–12 classroom. Journal of Geography, 106(6), 217–225.

Get a copy here.

The paper focuses on geospatial data, but maybe you can make connections to your own teaching areas. In reading the paper, think about these questions:

  1. Are the standards in your subject area relating to your students’ use of geospatial, time-based data? If yes, what are they?
  2. What do you think about the paper’s central thesis—that it is valuable for students to work with such data?
  3. In your teaching, is there a place for you introduce your students to these themes? If so, how?

For this assignment, please write an essay of approx. 500 words that responds to these questions.

Prepare your essay in a separate word processor—e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or OpenOffice. Then turn in your work as follows:

  1. Click “Write Submission” and copy-paste your essay into Blackboard.

  1. Use “Attach File” and upload only a .docx or .pdf file. Please do not submit an .odt file—that creates extra work for me.

This assignment must be completed individually.
