Dear and honoured Friend,

The letter which you so graciously wrote to the Society of Independent Artists has now been read, with grateful pleasure, by our Society’s members. The reason for my delay in replying is that I wanted to extend to you the Society’s official thanks, which were expressed when the letter was read out at the last general meeting.

You ask for reassurance that by joining us you do not somehow pit yourself against the Műcsarnok. My answer is simply that only the other day, at the Műcsarnok’s last board meeting, when I was congratulated on 40 years of membership, I remarked that I have been a founding member of the Műcsarnok for 40 years, that I regard it as a second home and that never, under any circumstances, could I ever betray it. – Am I right in thinking that in

this regard, our feelings are the same?

The Society of Independent Artists is not in competition either with the Műcsarnok or with the Nemzeti Szalon; it is not their opponent. First and foremost, it provides our artists with a club, a place which aims to be somewhere where they can get together in a family environment and which can teach them to feel, contrary to the Soviet spirit of our times, that a Hungarian artist is forever a Hungarian. It promotes this attitude nationwide in its exhibitions around the country, inculcating and strengthening a belief in Hungarian values. Alongside the exhibitions at our Budapest club we also put on a representative show in the autumn (this year at the N[emzeti]. Szalon) and it is there that the medal which bears your name will be awarded.

I trust at least that I have put your mind at rest and that you will give your blessing to this new award.

Igen tisztelt kedves Barátom!

A Független Művészek Társaságához címzett nagybecsű leveledet Társaságunk tagjai hálás örömmel olvasták. Válaszom azért késett, mert legutóbbi ülésünkön azt felolvasva a Társaság hivatalos köszönetét is tolmácsolni akartam.

Soraidban megnyugtatást kérsz arra nézve, hogy a Műcsarnokkal szemben nem jelent-e ellenzéki állapot álláspontot, ha velünk is tartasz. Erre csak az a válaszom, hogy éppen a Műcsarnok legutóbbi választmányi ülésén, amikor 40 éves jubileumom alkalmából ott üdvözöltek, kijelentettem, hogy a Műcsarnoknak 40 éve vagyok alapító tagja és azt úgy tekintem, mint egy második szülőházat, melyhez soha semmiféle körülmények közt hűtlen lenni nem tudnék. – Ugyebár, ebben is

egyezik a véleményünk?

A Független Művészek Társasága se a Műcsarnokkal, se a Nemzeti Szalonnal nem konkurrál, nem vetélytárs. Első sorban klubot ad művészeinknek, ahol célja az, hogy őket családi szellemben ősszetartsa és arra nevelje, hogy a mai szovjet-szellemmel szemben a magyar művész mindenkor magyar maradjon. Ezt hirdeti szerte az országban is vidéki tárlatain, hogy a magyarság erejében való hitet megörökítse, illetve erősítse. Fővárosi klub kiállításai mellett őszszel egy-egy nagy reprezentatív tárlatot rendez (ezideileg a N. Szalonban) ott kerül a nevedre alapítótt aranyérem is kiosztásra.

Azt hiszem legalább, hogy most már megnyugtattalak és ennek az alapítását megengeded.
