The moon revolves around the Earth which causes it to look like it is changing shape. These different “shapes” are called phases. There are 8 different phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent. The moon is illuminated since it reflects the light from the sun.
