1. Shirley Jiang - The 4:30 start time is a long wait after the 2:20 school day.  Both students have 7am classes already.
2. Harold Gallego - 4:30 works better for working parents and would rather donate the proceeds from SLT meetings to the school.  3:30 is very tough to attend.
3. Madison - Already has after school so, the time works
4. Paula Trinidad - 3:30 is very challenging and 4:30 is best
5. Amy Wolf - 3:45 is a suggestion or 4:00

Agenda Item #2: End of the School Year 23-24                (LEE + CEPEDA)

• FHS SY 23-24 EOY  End of Year Data
• CEP Goals for the 24-25 SY

• By June 2025, physical and mental wellness for English Language Learners will improve, as measured by a 3 % increase and will increase attendance by 3% for newcomer ELL students.
• By June 2025, literacy for all students will improve, as measured by a 3% increase from 35% to 38% of the percentage of all students reading at or above grade level on the MAP Growth Assessment.
• Flushing HS will address priority 4: All students graduate college and career ready and have a strong plan and pathway to economic security with the following SMART goal.  By August 2025, the 4 year graduation rate for all students will increase 2% from 87% to 89% as measured by the Graduation Tracker and STARS.
• By June 2025, the percentage of Chronically Absent students for Hispanic Students will decrease by 5% from 53% to 48% as measured by Insight Chronic Absenteeism reports.
• By June 2025, the Chronic Absenteeism rate for all students will decrease by 5% from 52 to 47% as measured by Insight Chronic Absenteeism reports.

• Ms. Lee provided and overview of slides # 2-8 regarding school date. Reviewed attendance, academic and overall school data. Review data on slides #7 – Hoping to increase the overall student connectedness to the school building. OORS refers to the incidents happening in the building. Review incidents, Level ⅘ Incidents, and suspensions - there has been an overall decrease in these categories.
• CEP Goals for SY 24-25: physical and mental wellness for ELL. Increase literacy levels for students.
• Ms. Cepeda presented information on EOY Cumulative Data Report as of June 2024.  She provided a brief overview of goals from the CBO team. There are 3 goals: Social Services, Attendance Improvement, and Youth Development and Leadership.
• She presented her work plan:

1. Centralized approach to attendance with a stakeholder and point person
2. Created a master document of which students are receiving which services and the effectiveness of each intervention
3. School will be working on preventative measures in terms of student attendance.

• Options for ELL students who are not native speakers. – only if they have entered 9th grade.
• Students are coming into the building and registering.
• Students registered on June 13th – right before the regents.

Friday attendance has historically been 10% lower in comparison to Monday-Thursday each week the last school year.  Let’s brainstorm different ideas about why Friday attendance has been low and what solutions we could implement for this current school year.

Agenda Item #3:  Important Updates                                                  (LEE)

Safety:

• We had a company watch out doors – we had parted ways with them. School aids were hired to tackle this issue.
• 3 full time deans – Eller new Climate and Culture AP, Community Associate
• Common places the students hide: library, cafeteria
• We are going to continue to monitor this
• New doorbell system. Our front door is very busy – there seems to not be using it. Ms. Lee is going to encourage  them to turn it back on.

Grade Level Teams:

• We have reorganized the school into having grade teams. AP, Teacher, PC, Support Staff CBO – will be working together to create consistency there to create fun. Making it more interesting for students to come to school. We want to make it more balanced for every grade level to get more fun.
• We are also going to be looking at data with our grade advisors – is the only way to make small learning communities. We are able to see students and see the work that they are doing.

Calendar:

• September: no days off. Attendance Incentives of before and after holidays, the 26th is out PTC – meet the teacher, progress report on the 27th, we’ll be looking more closely at grades.
• Parents teacher conferences – students waiting for them to be in person due to parent wanting to meet the student teachers. Wolf looked at data which showed that many parents were not able to make it and doing it virtually made it more accessible for everyone. Maybe a family day during the school day.
• Part of the grade team works is to develop activities for the community.
• The sports team – there is never parents there. Consider how timing plays a role in parents not being able to attend. Create events for families.

• They were looking at how to support students and how to ensure that what we provide students works for them.

• Roll out: maybe consider having a town hall where all the students are receiving this information.

Agenda Item #6: Cell Phone Policy                                       (THOMPSON)

Discussion:

• Problem: Cell phones are a major distraction in the classroom, with notifications, social media, and texting diverting students' attention away from lessons.
• 72% of teens say they often check for messages or notifications as soon as they wake up

• Solution: Yondr bags. They are magnetically sealed pouches to store phones.
• Students are more likely to stay engaged with the material, participate actively in class discussions, and focus on learning activities.
• Fewer distractions lead to improved classroom concentration and better academic performance.
• Limiting phone use fosters more meaningful face-to-face interactions among students, which can improve social skills and strengthen relationships.
• The opportunity for cyberbullying and negative online interactions is reduced.
• Schools in 41 states and 21 countries have opted into purchasing Yondr bags
• Over 65%, have saw improvements in academic performance

• Yondr bags to keep cell phones safe. Positive: fewer distractions in the classroom and more academic performance, strengthen relationships, and there will be a decrease in cyberbullying. The data show that there is improvement in overall academic performance. Students will still have access to their parents incase of an emergency and parents are still able to contact students in the school. If the Yondr bags students will also be able to stay in the school.
• Share example that happen in the nurse's office – how would we control that they are giving us a phone that works – we are able to view that open entire students are providing us with a phone that works. Looking at the ways in which this might impact the student involved in the classes.
• Wolf: questions – are students expected to carry the bags with them? Yes
• Maria: questions - how many people are going to be in charge of opening the bags for the students?

• Looking at the long term benefit

• Shirley: what if the teachers hold the key – 1st and 8th period teachers – the company come to the school and does an assessment of how many are needed.
• Thompson: Technology is evolving and we just have to explore options – we need to find a solution. And We are not what this is yet.
• Gallego: There is a benefit to seeing how it works. It restructures the students' brains.
• Espinal: Pilot program for students to participate in the program – the are able to become advocates for the program.
• Thompson: With young adults we have to ensure that everyone is starting with this program. January - June can be the pilot program
• Maria: Are the magnets able to be purchased on amazon?

• Thompson: yes, research states that they are working harder in ensuring.

• Madison: No students will able to join the pilot program

• Lee: The Chancellor is speaking about this information.

• Gallego: This is more of a gentle approach.
• Thompson: Cell Phone policy and culture of the school building.
• Wolf: whatever we decide to do we have to ensure that everybody is aware of the rollout of this cellphone policy.

Agenda Item # 7: Staff, Parents, and Student Concerns          (ESPINAL)

Students’ Concerns:

• Madison: A student has two  geometry classes and one has already passed the regents for US history yet is enrolled in US History
• Internship opportunities for students?
• Why do students have a full schedule when they only need a few classes to graduate … feels like a punishment for being on track.

Staff  concerns:

• Richardson: concern for the students – in terms of schedule - is extra shaky this school year. PGC programming and other classes error has been happening.
• Next week we are rolling out the grade teams – in terms of how those adjustments are going to happen – plans are good but thinking about how is going to be implemented. People that are in it are clear on what they need to do. Some people do not have an idea of what they are doing next week.

Parents concerns:

• 3 electives scheduling – no health class: fitness + PGC
• Constantly enrolling – how much can this school take? Class sizes

• Scheduling is due to grade teams – when we make a change we have to make 5 different changes elsewhere.
• C6 - staff had the option for this – making sure that staff had time to make sure this is ready.

Parents concerns:

• Seniors have too many electives and my son doesn’t have health, ensure that all seniors have all their required courses
• Class sizes are over 34 students
