Workshop #2: Basic Scumhunting

[19:28:57] %TheWhoDoctor~: mafiasignup just to highlight you all - Welcome to Workshop Number TWOOOOO

Introduction

[19:29:35] %TheWhoDoctor~: This second workshop is going to be something a lot of you have asked about - Scumhunting!

[19:29:57] %TheWhoDoctor~: Throughout this workshop, we will discuss ways to get rid of those scummy players, so that as a Townie, you have a higher chance of winning.

[19:30:18] %TheWhoDoctor~: Pre-Workshop Notice: I am not going to teach you how to TurboTwid/Twidbo. That's my strat.

[19:30:54] +VeryPinkPancakes: people asked me what twidbo is

[19:30:55] @superstarsrock: that's why Im here

[19:30:58] %TheWhoDoctor~: But today, we're going to go over Scumhunting strategies, Making good reads, FOS (finger of suspicion), and what scumhunting actually is

Player Interactions and FoS

[19:32:26] %TheWhoDoctor~: We're first going to go over some of the basics of scumhunting.

[19:32:54] %TheWhoDoctor~: In themes like Vanilla, or Modified Execution, or Nomination, where town has no power roles, you must rely on scumhunting to win.

[19:33:17] %TheWhoDoctor~: The best way to do this is to look at how players interact.

[19:33:46] %TheWhoDoctor~: Look for players who are buddying with eachother, or interacting strangely with each other - like they know something secret about one another

[19:34:15] %TheWhoDoctor~: After people begin to die, look at how EVERY other player interacted with them

[19:34:35] %TheWhoDoctor~: If they were Mafia, look to see who buddied up with them, and who was very much against them.

[19:35:01] %TheWhoDoctor~: If they were town, look to see who pushed their lynch very hard, and who tried to stop them from being lynched.

[19:35:57] %TheWhoDoctor~: On another note, look to see how people have seen the other player.

[19:36:17] %TheWhoDoctor~: If Player A flips scum, and Player B said "oh I think they're town", then Player B might be scum as well.

[19:36:55] %TheWhoDoctor~: If Player A flips town, and Player B said "They're definitely scum" Player B is scummy there, too

[19:37:06] %TheWhoDoctor~: This is where FoS, or finger of suspicion comes in.

[19:37:31] %TheWhoDoctor~: As a townie, you should be able to pick out players who are doing scummy things like leading lynches on town or getting reads as Mafia on Town

[19:37:39] %TheWhoDoctor~: And point your FOS at them

[19:38:02] %TheWhoDoctor~: That way, people know for sure who you think as scum, and if they agree with you, they won't lynch you and might even follow you.

[19:38:36] %TheWhoDoctor~: In fact, as a townie, you should be analyzing everyone's FOS as well.

[19:38:52] %TheWhoDoctor~: If you suddenly see 3 people with an FOS on 1 person who you see as townie, you might be seeing the mafia buddying up.

Lurking and Fillering

[19:39:45] %TheWhoDoctor~: Now that we've gone over FOS and the Start of scumhunting, we have to bring up something that most people will suspect as scum behavior

[19:39:48] %TheWhoDoctor~: Lurking and Fillering

[19:40:28] %TheWhoDoctor~: When someone is Lurking, it means they are active in the game, with night actions or just watching everything happen, but aren't saying anything to help out.

[19:41:13] %TheWhoDoctor~: When someone is Fillering, it means they are active in the game, with night actions, but instead of just passively watching everything happen, they post inane comments to make it seem like they aren't Lurking, but they still aren't contributing anything

[19:41:33] +VeryPinkPancakes: Hey for people who are in the question doc

[19:41:38] +VeryPinkPancakes: Leave your username please

[19:41:42] %TheWhoDoctor~: Lurking can just be a sign of AFK, so be careful when FOSing because of it. However, it can also be a sign of scum trying to stay out of the spotloght.

[19:42:13] %TheWhoDoctor~: Fillering, on the other hand, is a mark of either a bad townie, or a Mafia who wants to seem like they're contributing, but actually aren't.

[19:42:31] %TheWhoDoctor~: If you have to choose between lynching a Lurker and a Filler, you're better off lynching the Filler

[19:42:48] %TheWhoDoctor~: The filler knows he's not actually contributing anything - the lurker just may not be paying attention

[19:42:58] @superstarsrock: if the person doesn't talk much, but responds whenever he/she is pressured, that's usually a good sign that they are lurking btw

[19:43:21] %TheWhoDoctor~: If you want to test if someone is lurking, just lynch them or highlight them, and see what happens.

[19:43:32] +VeryPinkPancakes: Hobbes2 aka Anonymous Pumpkin just pointed out something very important in the question document!!!

[19:43:48] +VeryPinkPancakes: "There is no “best strategy” - players use a combination of many strategies to be successful."

LYLO Scumhunting

[19:44:26] %TheWhoDoctor~: The next thing we're going to go over is Lylo Scumhunting

[19:44:33] %TheWhoDoctor~: With 1 person confirmed.

[19:44:40] +VeryPinkPancakes: the other thing is, direct all questions on "TwidBo" to spamming Twid's PMs

[19:44:57] %TheWhoDoctor~: In Lylo, if 1 person is confirmed townie (by cop, bloodhound, or otherwise), the other 2 players should immediately lynch each other on daystart

[19:45:21] %TheWhoDoctor~: This will allow the confirmed player to essentially "interrogate" the other two and decide for himself which of the two is more likely to be scum.

[19:45:41] %TheWhoDoctor~: The confirmed should ask questions akin to "Why aren't you scum?" or "Tell me why I shouldn't lynch you."

[19:46:29] %TheWhoDoctor~: As the other players, you should be able to back yourselves up. "I helped push the lynch on scum on Day 2" or "I've suspected X (dead)/Y (dead)/Z (alive) as a scumteam the whole game!"

[19:46:46] %TheWhoDoctor~: That way, if you really are town, you're less likely to be lynched.

[19:47:16] %TheWhoDoctor~: Now that you know how to make a read, we're going to move to making a GOOD read

[19:47:24] +VeryPinkPancakes: It is a little more obvious when the scum has a hard time thinking of stuff they did to aid town/thinks of more irrelevant things

[19:47:39] +VeryPinkPancakes: like "I lynched someone" instead of "I pushed on someone"

[19:47:54] %TheWhoDoctor~: Okay, for making a good read, you need to be able to back yourself up.

[19:48:13] %TheWhoDoctor~: Once you've FOSed someone, PROVE YOURSELF to the rest of the town.

[19:48:42] %TheWhoDoctor~: Be able to back up your FOS with at least 2 reasons, if not 3, 4, 5...but make them good reasons

[19:48:58] %TheWhoDoctor~: Don't just say "I think he's scum" "he's lurking" "he lynched me" and think that's good enough

[19:49:03] %TheWhoDoctor~: That's more likely to get you lynched

[19:49:43] %TheWhoDoctor~: Things like "He didn't lynch X that died as scum." "He tried lynching the cop when someone else CCed." "He hasn't been consistent with his scum reads" will work much better.

[19:50:23] %TheWhoDoctor~: Now, I can't say this enough: There is no "best way" to make a scum read. Find a way that works for you and USE IT. This is where TurboTwid came to be.

[19:50:38] %TheWhoDoctor~: I found a method of scumhunting and scumreading that worked for me, and works very, very often.

[19:50:51] %TheWhoDoctor~: However, it won't work for other people, solely because no 2 people play mafia the same way.

[19:50:58] %TheWhoDoctor~: So test around a bit, figure out what works for you.

Tips on Scumhunting

[19:51:03] %TheWhoDoctor~: But we do have some tips to help you.

[19:51:39] %TheWhoDoctor~: Tip 1) Make sure you're reading/analyzing everything posted. Ignoring one line here or there can change the entire meaning of everything else you've read so far, so it's important to pay attention to everything.

[19:52:33] %TheWhoDoctor~: You could also see something that contradicts your read - maybe you think someone is scummy because they're fillering, but they post a small but well-thought-out reads list, you might need to change your FOS

[19:52:56] %TheWhoDoctor~: Tip 2) Never rely heavily on player meta - it does have uses, but it's far from perfect.

[19:53:24] %TheWhoDoctor~: You've probably also seen me Twidbo before, and if suddenly I don't, I'm probably not the same type of roles I usually am when I Twidbo.

[19:53:34] %TheWhoDoctor~: But I could also change that solely to trip you up.

[19:53:42] %TheWhoDoctor~: So know how other people play, but don't rely on it.

[19:54:01] %TheWhoDoctor~: If you're going to base your whole read on player meta, more often than not you'll be wrong.

[19:54:29] %TheWhoDoctor~: Tip 3) Take initiative!!! I can't stress this enough. Playing mafia passively is not the way to win.

[19:54:45] %TheWhoDoctor~: player meta is very useful, but don't rely on it.

[19:55:10] +VeryPinkPancakes: like I know when Hannahh is scum, she often Turbolurks. I'm not saying "Hannahh is definitely scum because she is lurking", I'm saying "I should pressure hannahh to find out more info."

[19:55:10] %TheWhoDoctor~: Ask other players questions. Force them to give up tidibts of information about their role, their buddying, their scumreads, whatever.

[19:55:55] %TheWhoDoctor~: If there's been someone that's been neutral, take someone you scumread and someone you townread, and ask that neutral player to make a read on both to get a taste of how they think

[19:57:24] %TheWhoDoctor~: But always come up with some way to get information about how other people have been playing or about what they think, that's one of the fastest and simplest ways to make scum reads

[19:57:30] +VeryPinkPancakes: I wish we could give more ps anon examples because this happened in anon 22 as well

[19:57:44] %TheWhoDoctor~: Does someone give an iffy answer, one that doesn't seem like it fits the general consensus? Probably a scummy answer.

[19:58:08] %TheWhoDoctor~: Does someone give a fluffy answer that only says 1 simple thing that's been stated over and over, but has been fluffed up to look like it says more and more? Probably a scummy answer

Differentiate scumhunting from turboing/tunneling

[20:01:31] %TheWhoDoctor~: Onto our last point

[20:01:40] %TheWhoDoctor~: You should be able to reach a consensus when lynching.

[20:02:06] %TheWhoDoctor~: If you're 100% convinced that someone is scum, don't be afraid to push it!

[20:02:12] %TheWhoDoctor~: You should be able to prove yourself though.

[20:02:26] +VeryPinkPancakes: this is different from tunneling and turboing btw

[20:02:55] %TheWhoDoctor~: You can be very good at rooting out scum, and correctly identify 146245989135 in a row, but if you can't convince other players, with your reasoning, and getting them lynched, then it's worthless.

[20:04:27] %TheWhoDoctor~: But anyways, if you wanna get better at scumhunting, you should first be trying to learn how to convince people of your point.

[20:05:23] %TheWhoDoctor~: On that same note, if someone leads a wagon on town, don't turn around on them and turbo!

[20:05:35] %TheWhoDoctor~: Sometimes an incorrect read is just that - an incorrect read.

[20:05:43] %TheWhoDoctor~: However, this is where we get into Turbo vs Tunnel vs Push

[20:06:02] %TheWhoDoctor~: Turbo is where someone crazily pushes a lynch without any reasoning whatsoever, hoping people just blindly follow in the confusion.

[20:06:37] %TheWhoDoctor~: Tunnel is where someone is so dead set in their read that they refuse to look at other people scumreads or see the townie things their FOS has done.

[20:07:22] %TheWhoDoctor~: Pushing the read is where tunneling gets good - they've been pushing hard to get someone lynched, but have still been taking into account EVERYTHING their FOS says AND everything the rest of the village says.

[20:08:30] %TheWhoDoctor~: scumhunting that will work [most of the time] is pushing the read, because tunnel and turbo have either no backup or lack analyzing everything.

[20:09:08] %TheWhoDoctor~: But anyways, now you all should hopefully have a better grasp on how to scumhunt

[20:09:15] %TheWhoDoctor~: And hopefully that helps you townies play better in games

[20:09:48] %TheWhoDoctor~: This concludes workshop number 2!
