This Week at UNITY

ctk-30-30.pngcol-30-30.png  This is the 25th Sunday after Pentecost. This church year is coming to a close… just three more weeks until Advent!  Which means we are near the end of our year in the Gospel of Mark, and near the end of Jesus’ ministry in today’s Gospel reading. Gathered in the Jerusalem temple with his disciples, Jesus has them look first at the rich and then at a poor widow as they put their offerings into the temple treasury. His comments to the disciples are harsh, and don’t so much commend the widow as they do castigate her counterpoints, but we trust Scriptural harshness is always designed to push us not towards guilt or blame but towards a better way to live. Today we’ll look for examples of this better way both in the readings and in our church family.

What a filled and meaningful weekend this is at the Christ the King campus! In worship, we host our combined UNITY Adult Choir (with brass) for a special anthem. We also give thanks for the service of our many veterans on Veterans Day and the 100th anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I. And, we also give thanks for the ministry Jennifer Carlson Olson has done in our midst for the past 14 months.  Even as we attend to all those important things, we get to listen in on a unique set of readings which lift up the plight and faithfulness of 4 widows across 3 readings in our scriptural tradition. Like any heroes of the faith, their deeds are almost beyond our capacity to imitate and yet in the absence of ideals, we tend to forget how much God’s people can do.  May their examples not just awe us but inspire us to our best selves!

Adult Education Hour Offerings: Make sure to check out our Sunday morning educational offerings as you RENEW your faith and your relationships here at UNITY!  Childcare is always available in the nursery.

Bible Study at CTK: 9:00 in the Library.  Join us for a study led by Pastor John. Finding Your Identity By Exploring God’s. So often we try to figure out who we are in life but spend virtually no time trying to comprehend the nature of God.  We probably have it reversed!  If we invest first in knowing God, then finding our passion, self, and purpose will emerge from a deeper sense of the One who made us!

Bible Study at COL: 9:30 a.m. in Room 202.  Join Pastor Sherrie...in Room 202 as we reflect with with gratitude in our hearts as we prepare for the Thanksgiving season.   We’ll take a look at the Scripture passages that remind us to rejoice and be glad!

Forum at COL: 9:30 a.m. in the North Fellowship Hall. Join us to experience Iceland with the Karrels ~ What do Paul Karrels, Tracy Karrels and Flat Jesus have in common? They’ve all been to Iceland! Together, in fact! Join Paul and Tracy Karrels as they share their experiences in Iceland. (A special guest appearance by Flat Jesus may or may not occur.)

Sr High Event: Youth Board, Nov 11th, 6-7:30 PM. It’s time for us to plan our winter Sr High events! Join us for Youth Board - dinner will be served!

Last Weekend’s Congregational Call Meeting.  Thank you to the 273 people who made up our quorum at last Sunday’s meeting (we needed 196...what a GREAT turn-out).  Those present voted to call Josh Evans to be a pastor at Unity Lutheran Church (Votes recorded as:  247 yes, 3 no and 8 abstaining). Josh has accepted the call and will be ordained at his home congregation in Chicago on Saturday, December 1.  We will pull together a few carloads of people to attend… please consider going. Josh’s first day at Unity will be Monday, December 10.  His installation as one of our pastors will be sometime in January 2019.

Live Love is the theme of this year’s Stewardship appeal. Envelopes have been mailed out and you should have received yours by now.  Please read through it, give thanks to God, and pray about what you can give in 2019.   Fill out the enclosed Giving Goal or go to our website, www.unitybrookfield.org to fill it out there.

If you’d like to make giving even easier, click on the Donate to UNITY box on the homepage  to give through Electronic Fund Transfer via your checking or savings account or credit card.  Create a profile and you can set up when you’d like to give…weekly, monthly, semi-monthly, the choice is yours and you can change it at any time! (you no longer need to file a form and cancelled check with us).  And best part, you no longer have to worry about grabbing your checkbook when you leave for church.  It’s already DONE!  Thank you for all that YOU do and for your generosity!  Thanks to all who shared their stories of how UNITY make a difference!

Keep in mind there are a lot of exciting ministry visions on the horizon for 2019. We will likely do a special financial appeal to add new features for the backyard at the CTK campus (pavilion-outdoor worship space and playground being the most significant), retire debt at COL, and complete indoor improvements at both campuses.

BEGIN Interfaith Thanksgiving Service - At a time where we grieve with our Jewish brothers and sisters over the tragedy in Pittsburgh, let us come together as people of faith to join together with others from faith tradition all around our area. We’ll gather at Congregation Emanu-El, on Wednesday, November 14th at 7:00 p.m. for a time of worship, prayer, music followed by a time of fellowship and some of the best desserts you’ll ever eat! The speakers this year include: Pastor John, Father Ed Kornath from St. John Vianney and Imam Noman Hussain from the Islamic Society of Milwaukee West along with our host, Cantor Deborah Martin from the synagogue. We’ll take an offering as part of the service for the Waukesha Food Pantry either in the form of monetary or non-perishable food donations.

CTK Sanctuary: Thank you to everyone who were able to help on Saturday to begin the move out and preparation for the new carpet installation:

Today following the second worship service we’ll gather from 11:30 am to 3:00 pm: Join us for lunch in the library and then work to finish moving the rest of the pews, furniture, and other items from the CTK sanctuary and narthex into the Gathering Place. We hope to have everything cleared out in time for you to get home for the Packers game at 3:25 pm!
Or if you could help us next week, let us know.  We hope to have a Move-In the sanctuary day on Saturday, November 17th from 9- Noon.

Thank you to Jan Constable at jrconstable@ sbcglobal.net for organizing this effort.

A special thanks to Pete Meiklejohn who arranged for us to borrow 12 furniture dollies to aid in moving all the pews! Needed: If you have a 7/16 open wrench, please bring it along for removing the pews.  In addition to moving, we thank Patty Zais, Mike Yohnk and Jeff Furness for replacing the regular light bulbs with more efficient LED bulbs, not only to save money but also to brighten our worship space.

CTK and COL Sanctuary Updates.  Lots of things are beginning to happen!

Thanksgiving for Jennifer Carlson Olson’s Ministry Among Us ~ Jennifer’s time as our Bridge Pastor will come to a close on November 30. Jennifer has blessed UNITY since the day she walked in the door with her energy for people, strength in team ministry, willingness to try new things and cool ideas like finding a way for kids to “walk on water” during VBS.

We will mark Jennifer’s time with us at each campus. At the Christ the King campus, we’ll give thanks for Jennifer during the Sunday services on November 11. At the Cross of Life Campus, we’ll do the same the weekend of November 17-18. We keep Jennifer in our prayers as she moves on to the next chapter in her ministry. For November, however, it is a time of thanksgiving. Add your individual thanks to Jennifer even as we collectively do so on the 11th and the 17th-18th.

Photos to Ed Dominski.   Ed creates our annual Christmas video postcard (usually e-mailed to the congregation just prior to Christmas) which is a re-cap of our year in mission and ministry together.  If you have a photo of the people or ministries at either campus or any of our partners that would be cool to have in that slide display, please email it to Ed between now and Thanksgiving.  His email is: ed.dominski@gmail.com

ADVENT FEST IS COMING! Mark your calendars and save FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30 for our annual celebration to ring in the season of waiting for Jesus. Everyone is invited to Advent Fest.  Dinner is served at 5:30. There is a short worship at 6:15 and then the rest of the evening is filled with making a “Christ in Christmas” craft or decking the UNITY COL halls.  CRAFT SIGN UP IS READY!  Go to the UNITY website and click on the Advent Fest box to see the crafts and sign up.  See the sample table in the Narthex/Fellowship Hall.

Sign up to donate to the Sr High Food Pantry Scavenger Hunt! Next Sunday, November 18th, Sr High students will be traveling throughout the area to pick up non-perishable food donations for the Waukesha Food Pantry! Sign up on the sheet by the servanthood wall, and our Senior High youth will show up at your house between 6-7:15 PM. Or, send an email to Matt with your address. Thanks in advance for your donations!

Thrivent Members Needed.   Do you have a life insurance policy or investments through Thrivent?  If so, we could use your help.  First, as a member, you are able to ask for a $250 Gift Card to support serving that happens through UNITY TWICE a year.  It’s super easy.  You go online and enter the information we can send your way (one of our members, Chris Nelson, will coordinate this...basically when we know of a need, she’ll contact one or more people on the list and send them a link so they can fill out an online request.  If it takes you 10 minutes to fill out and we get $250 in return, just think, you’re earning at the rate of $1,500/hour for UNITY!)  The gift cards can then be used to buy food for our recovery ministry meals, medical supplies at Bread of Healing, office needs at the Waukesha Food Pantry, shipping of Mission of Healing equipment to El Salvador, Youth Group service projects, Sew Comfy and Quilting fabrics, etc.) We estimate that if all our Thrivent members participated it could amount to well over $10,000 a year.

Second, depending on the amount invested through Thrivent, you may be able to choose a non-profit to receive your “Thrivent Choice” dollars.   Unity Lutheran in Brookfield is now being shown in their system, so take a few minutes to select UNITY.   In years past, we have received over $1,000/year  through Thrivent Choice dollars!

If you are a Thrivent member willing to help with the first item, please e-mail your name to Pastor John, Muriel, or Sherrie and they will: A: thank you, and B: get you connected to Chris Nelson!

Invite people to UNITY.  Grab one of our “welcome bags” from the narthex and use it to invite someone.  Or just invite. People are longing to be part of a community, or to learn, or to praise God, or to do significant things in the lives of others… this is the essence of discipleship here at UNITY. Nothing is more meaningful than a personal invitation. Pray about who might need an invitation that might come only from you this week.

“Surviving the Holidays” Workshop for Grievers: November 13 at Holy Cross. The holiday season can be painful if you’re grieving a loved one’s death. Our Member Care Provider, Debbie Riederer, is co-facilitating a workshop that can help you prepare for the holidays. A “Surviving the Holidays” workshop will be held at Holy Cross Lutheran Church on Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 6:00-8:00 pm (if you missed the one on Saturday). Holy Cross is located at W156 N8131 Pilgrim Rd. in Menomonee Falls. Questions? Contact Debbie Riederer at debbie@ unitybrookfield.org or 414-587-2656.

Care.  Communication issues with your parents? Friend issues? Sadness in your life? Anxiety about a relationship that’s not healthy? Taking more pills or drinks than you’d like? Don’t face these things alone. Don’t face deaths, hospitalizations, a job loss, or bad grades alone either. Our pastors and pastoral care Coordinator Debbie Riederer are always available to you. Sometimes we’re the only stop you’ll make in reaching out… other times, we are the first stop in a healing process that might include more skilled professionals or supportive connections that get made in the process. All of that works itself out once we start talking, but the hard and yet blessing-filled first step is just knowing you can reach out.

The Widow’s Offering.  This weekend in Sunday School Jesus and the disciples do some observing in the Temple.  Some rich people are giving lots of money and a poor widow gives two small coins.  Whose offering was greater?  Well, with Jesus it isn’t about the size of the offering… it’s about the size of your heart!  The widow’s gift wasn’t spare change… it was all she had, and she gave it to God out of a place of love and trust.  What a beautiful message for us as we head into a season of getting ready for Baby Jesus.

Bring Sunday School Home!  Check out the Education Page on the UNITY website. Each week there are updates that include a Family Page with information about the Sunday School story, prayers and activity ideas.

Take Sunday School on the ROAD!  As you work to make being a part of Sunday School a priority - consider going to the “other campus!”  You always have options - attend any campus, any day and any hour!  When your calendar gets complicated OR just for fun - be bold and take it on the road!  Check out the Education pages on the UNITY website for lots of other info about what UNITY has for young learners www.unitybrookfield.org. Contact Jo Ann Tomm (joann@unitybrookfield.org) or Education Chair, Jolene Epding (jepding@gmail.com) with Sunday School questions.

WE ARE GETTING READY FOR THE CHRISTMAS PROGRAMS: This year there are two weekends of Sunday School Christmas programs! Kids participate in one program during their hour of Sunday School. The kids in SS at COL campus will share their programs the weekend of December 15-16 ... Saturday at 5:00pm, Sunday morning during the 8:30 and 10:45 service AND a special evening program on Sunday, December 16 at 5:00pm for the kids in COL 9:30 Sunday School.  Kids in SS at the CTK campus will share their program during the 10:15 service on Sunday, December 23. Practicing for all this awesomeness will begin this weekend during each Sunday School Hour.
