Editor’s Corner

Jai Jinendra,

As we draw near to the Mahavir Jayanti Celebration day on April 20th, the program participants and coordinators, and all volunteers are in a fervor to get everything ready to make this a successful event.

As a new Secretary of the JSNC committee, I have a great seat in being able to observe how all the members of our community are coming together in helping every which way they can.  It brings a sense of pride that I belong to that same community and feel humbled in your dedication and generous donations of time and money.

I feel that any thanks and gratitude we accord you, is not enough.  But, that doesn’t mean that we don’t.  And to that, to all the sponsors, volunteers,  and participants, I say “Aapno Abhaar!”.

Let’s all make this a great event!  Come one,  come all, to the April 20th, Mahavir Jayanti Celebrations!  Read forth for more details …

Mahavir Jayanti Celebration

Mahavir Jayanti is one of the largest events sponsored by JSCNC, is open to everyone and demonstrates the unity and generosity of JAIN community.  The Executive committee is fully dedicated to the planning,  but your support - financial and volunteer - makes this program possible and successful every year.   As such, this year has been no exception for community support.  On behalf of the Executive Committee 2014, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and appreciation to all the sponsors who donated generously.

This month, and specifically on April 20th, starting at 2PM, we continue the tradition to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti at the Hindu Bhavan Cultural Hall.  Please see the below table for program details:

  • Please park only in designated spaces.  Observe all fire lane rules.
  • Please remove your shoes before entering the main hall.
  • Wear clean Puja attire if you are participating in Puja.  If your child is participating in Puja, please be there at 1:45pm sharp. The Puja will start on time whether you are there or not.
  • The children, choreographers and program directors have put in a lot of hard work.  Let’s do our part by observing silence during the items, and be generous in applauding them.

Mahavir Jayanti Program Rehearsal

JSCNC will be holding a mandatory dress rehearsal for all program participants on April 13th, between 3:00-7:00pm.  We have very limited time to complete two rounds of rehearsals.  All volunteers and participants, please arrive on time so everyone gets the opportunity to complete their rehearsals.

2014 YJA Convention

When: July 3 - 6, 2014
Crystal Gateway Marriott, Washington, DC

Young Jains of America would like to invite Jain youth between the ages of 14 and 29 to the 2014 YJA Convention: "Young Jains: Today's Learners, Tomorrow's Leaders." Join us in Washington, D.C. from July 3rd-6th at the Crystal Gateway Marriott.  Attendees will hear from a wide range of speakers, participate in engaging social events and forge everlasting connections!

Supporting our Youth

As most of us already know, we have a tremendous participation by our very own Jain youths in the YJA.  This is quite a feat, and we should take pride in their accomplishments as members and leaders of the YJA.  As such, we should support them in any way we can.  As stated above, this year, the YJA convention is being held in Washington DC, and they are asking for our help in terms of any contributions we can make towards this event.

To get a sense of the cost of this event, following are some high-level amounts for various items:

  • Speaker Travel Costs: $12,000
  • Guest Rooms: $77,000
  • Jain Food: $162,000

For more details, please download and view their powerpoint presentation from the following link:

The Jain Study Center has pledged $501.  If you, or anyone you know, is interested in pledging further, we will be happy to collect the funds and pass them on to YJA.  There are two ways you can pledge:

  • Bring  your pledge amount to the Mahavir Jayanti Program on April 20th.  Committee members will be available to collect your check.
  • Send your pledge amount to Mr. Pratyush Mehta at the following address:
                    Mr. Pratyush Mehta
                    207 Forsyth Drive
                    Chapel Hill, NC 27517

Please make checks payable to JSCNC.  Pledges will be accepted until April 30th.

Please sign-up at the following link to make your pledges:

Pathshala Dues
HSNC mandates that Pathshala dues are paid every year.  It is very important that we compensate HSNC for the use of the Hindu Center facilities for classes.  To that, we thank everyone who have already paid these dues.  We are still short on the payments.  If you have not already done so, please make every effort to send in the payments as soon as possible.

As mentioned in previous emails (Youth Pathshala dues), this year we are asking the dues be paid to JSCNC directly.  We will collect and pass them on to HSNC.  Note that, if you have direct auto-payments to HSNC already for this purpose, you do not have to pay twice.

To make payments, please bring a check (payable to JSCNC) to the Mahavir Jayanti program on April 20th, next Monthly meeting, or mail to Pratyush Mehta.  Full information and instructions can be found at
