Dear Ms/Mr [MP NAME],
I am writing to you as one of your constituents to ask for the government to offer more urgent help to Ukraine amid the intensifying Russian invasion.
The attacks are targeting civilians all over Ukraine. Many, including children, have been killed. More than 2.5 million have fled the country as refugees. Encircled cities and towns are cut off from essential supplies such as food and medicines.
There are many Ukrainians in the UK whose families have been affected by this war. Changes to visa requirements for Ukrainian relatives of UK-based sponsors are inadequate, leaving out those without indefinite leave to remain or settled status including Ukrainians with a work visa doing essential work in our NHS.
The sponsorship scheme allowing the British public to support Ukrainians without family ties to come here is welcome, but it must be accompanied by a clear process allowing the many people who wish to help to do so as effectively as possible. The government must not use bureaucratic vetting procedures as an excuse to introduce delays and limit the number of refugees we take in. It is also crucial that there are resources in place to support refugees with employment, education and community engagement.
There is no cause to expect Russian militants to come to the UK under the guise of refugees. Since general mobilisation in Ukraine has been announced, no men and women who can fight are leaving the country. The refugees fleeing the country are the most vulnerable groups.
Ukrainians are defending not only their country, but freedom and democracy in the world. They need maximum support from their allies and friends in the UK.
Yours sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]
