Prerequisites

Basics of laser physics and technology. Ray optics, optical physics, quantum optics, thermal physics, thermodynamics at bachelor level. Computer aided design of optical physics.

Lecture goals

  • To introduce the theoretical and practical aspects of high power lasers
  • To present the main notions associated with the implementation of these lasers
  • To make the connection between the theoretical limits and the evolution of technological solutions
  • To present the basics of interaction between a high power laser beam and common materials
  • To present a few applications.

HIGH POWER LASERS (J. Fontaine)

  • Lasers : light emission in the high power regime
  • General characteristics of laser beams - Examples
  • Power, Energy and beam quality
  • Technology of high power lasers
  • Practical illustration of material processing at the Irepa Laser Center

POWER PHOTONICS (T. Engel)

  • Basics of interaction between a high power beam and a material
  • Transport and distribution of high power laser beams
  • Focussing and shaping of laser beams
  • Physics of laser machining and material processing (heating, melting, and material removal)
  • Examples of applications for high power lasers

Applications

Examples of applications of high power lasers are given. A visit to high power facilities is organised.

Acquired skills

After this lecture, the student will be able :

  • to rapidly understand the practical informations given by power laser manufacturers.
  • to associate the characteristics of a laser source and potential applications
  • to identify a type of high powerlaser source for a given application and choose the required parameters.
