Collection of Nasopharyngeal (NP) Specimens

PRINCIPLE:

Nasopharyngeal (NP) specimens are collected to aid in the detection of Corynebacterium diptheriae, Strep. pyogenes, B.pertussis, RSV, Influenza virus and carrier states of N.meningitidis. S.pneumoniae and H.influenzae may also be of concern to the physician.

SPECIMEN COLLECTION:

Nasopharyngeal specimens should be obtained using a rayon, dacron or polyester tipped swab with a flexible wire shaft. Calcium alginate swabs should not be used.

1.    Gently insert the swab into the nose to the posterior nasopharynx.

2.    Rotate the swab slowly for 5 seconds to absorb the secretions.

3.    After collecting the sample, place the swab back into the culturette, label culturette with proper patient information (name, date of birth, specimen type, time of collection, date of collection, initials of collector) and transport to the lab immediately.
