Understanding the fight for Immigration

Immigration Myths:

  • “Immigrants who break the law deserve to be deported.”
  • “Criminalization of immigrants is just a side effect of the legal system.”
  • “Deportation is inevitable for those with criminal records.”

THERE ARE MANY WAYS AND REASONS THAT PEOPLE MIGRATE TO THIS COUNTRY AND TO RELEGATE FOLKS TO ONE OR TWO POINTS ADDS TO THE XENOPHOBIC ORIGINS AND FEARS OF THE SYSTEM.

What is Crimmigration? Crimmigration is the merging of criminal and immigration systems. It means that a minor charge or arrest can lead to detention and deportation for undocumented folks. Usually driven by polimigra tactics.

Results in criminalizing immigrants and treating them as criminals, even for minor infractions.

Criminal charges often result in deportation orders or extended detention, tearing apart families and communities.

Examples:

  • Local police sharing information with ICE (287g agreements)
  • Traffic stops or low-level charges turning into deportation proceedings
  • Detainers placed in jails to hold immigrants for ICE pickup

What’s Happening in Vegas?

  • Las Vegas Clark County Detention center is part of the 287g program, which means they actively collaborate with ICE.
  • Henderson Detention Center and Nevada Southern Detention Center are contracted with ICE as immigration detention centers
  • This disproportionately targets working-class, Black, and Brown communities.

The Polimigra is the collaboration between local police & immigration. This is how local police can act as extensions of ICE or Border Patrol in enforcing immigration laws.

Works Different in Every Jurisdiction:

  • Some areas have policies that limit ICE involvement with local police (e.g., sanctuary cities), while others have agreements to actively cooperate (e.g., 287(g) agreements).
  • In places with active cooperation, police can question immigration status during traffic stops or routine checks, leads to increased deportation risks.
  • In other places, police may say they do not engage with immigration enforcement unless there’s a serious crime involved but with Laken Riley they are holding anyone for ICE detention.

Polimigra’s role in the deportation pipeline contributes to fear, distrust, and safety issues in immigrant communities.

  • Police interactions (traffic stops, street vendor laws, 911 calls) become deportation risks
  • Broken Families due to increase in detention & deportation

ICE Watch & Rapid Response

What is ICE Watch? Trained volunteers observe and document ICE activity without escalating or interfering.

What To Do If You See ICE:

  1. Document everything: time, place, vehicle info, badge numbers
  2. Record safely from a distance
  3. Do NOT post unverified info on social media
  4. Report to organizers like Mojada Inc, Fifthsun Project, or NV immigrant Coalition
  5. Offer support to impacted families — food, rides, housing, or funds
