This is one of four landscape studies de László painted in October 1915 [3630][4307][112672], while staying at Knoydart as the guest of Arthur Bowlby, whom he painted in July that year [2885]. He returned in October the next year and painted a study of deerstalkers [11459].

The estate in west Invernessshire, Scotland, was sold by the Bowlby family in 1930 and purchased by the Brocket family. De László included a landscape of Knoydart in his portrait of Lady Brocket [3616] in 1936 though he is not known to have returned after 1916.
