Course Content (In progress)

Objectives of this Course:

Students will be able to describe how scientific investigation is carried out.

Students will be able to describe science’s role in our society: past, present and future.

Students will be able to interpret everyday physical phenomena in terms of relevant principles learned in this course.

Criteria for evaluation:

Grading will be based on the level of competency a student has achieved in the requisite skills. Each unit will have a rubric consisting of “I Can” statements. The student must demonstrate mastery of the “I Can” to attain that level.

Normally there are multiple categories within each level during a unit. The levels in each category will be averaged to obtain a mark (for example: 2, 3, 3 = 2.7). To determine the letter grade in infinite campus the following grading scale will be used:

Unit Portfolio

Each unit will have a Google Slides Portfolio where you will accumulate evidence of all work completed during the unit. The portfolios will be divided into sections so it is clear what evidence corresponds to each level. You may add additional evidence or notes to your portfolio as you see fit. This document is for YOUR benefit.

Level

Description

1

Student has completed less than half of the slides.

2

Student has completed more than half of the slides.

3

Student has filled out every slide.  Vast majority of responses are correct and thorough.

4

Student has filled out every slide and added additional content that they find helpful. Additional example problems, diagrams...

Unit Phenomenal Model

Level

Standard

1

I can accurately describe the model I am evaluating.

2

I can use the model to make testable predictions. I can evaluate the utility of the model.

3

I can show evidence of updating my model throughout the unit.

4

I can describe observations or knowledge gained that led to my updated final model.

Assessments

All assessments will have questions that are broken down into performance levels. The specific levels will be outlined in the unit portfolios. Scores will be assigned based on the highest level of MASTERY.

Assignments

All other assignments will have a grading rubric specific to the assignment.

Personalized Learning

We will strive to personalize your learning in physics in the following ways:

Conferencing:

Each student will meet with the instructor at least once a unit for an individual conference. This will usually be focused around the results of the mid-unit assessment. The conference will be used to help direct the student to learning opportunities to improve for the final assessment. The instructor will do their best to meet the individual conferencing needs of each student beyond this. Students who require additional time are reminded of advisory, before and after school times.

Practice Work:

As much or as little practice work as needed will be made available to the student to obtain the level of mastery they are capable of.

Standards Based Grading:

Students will be graded based on what level they can perform a skill rather than by the amount of work they complete.

Alternate Assessments

If a student desires an alternate assessment, they may conference with a teacher to make a plan. There will be no retake of assessments, but students can work out alternatives to replace the score.

Required Materials

        Chromebook

Notebook

        Writing Utensil

Access to an actual calculator is recommended.

Class Expectations:

Eating and drinking: Only water is allowed in my room, preferably from a reusable water bottle. If you are not following this rule, you will be asked to leave, and attendance will be updated.

Cell phones: Cell phones should be put away during class time unless instructed otherwise. If you are on your cell phone, you will be asked to put it away. If you do not, you will be asked to leave and attendance will be updated.

Passes: Passes will be given using SmartPass. One person out at a time. Your computer will be put to the front of the room so all can see somebody is out. If you do not return in a timely manner, you will be marked tardy and then absent depending on the length of time you are out.

Fulfill your purpose! As a class we will come up with what our purpose should be while in class.
