response attraction to pointless messages music(entertainment.time.com and thyblackman.com)

There are many different types of music that people listen to; country, rap, hip hop, rock, pop, etc. Music’s sound and beat can be very diverse, just as the audiences they attract are very diverse from from one another. However, the mainstream messages they send to the people are generally similar. They talk about sex, money, fame, love, drugs, wars, murder, and so on. Now my title for my topic is very blunt, what is the attraction to music with pointless messages? Automatically you probably feel that I mean these examples I mentioned are pointless. They’re not. But how they are used in context of the mainstream music is. Some music blatantly says to do things such as rape, murder, partake in drugs, etc. In an article called, “Yes Music & Violence, a Connection?” on thyblackman.com, it talks about the issue with sending out the wrong messages and particularly in hip hop music. In the article, it starts by talking about how a scholar John McWhorter compares white supremacist music to hip hop music. Woah, really? White Supremacist, the KKK who are racist and have history of lynching blacks and other hateful, racist actions compared to hip hop, people like Lil Wayne who wears his pants around his ankles and is rich? Yes, really. I can understand that much. The article give an example of why.  “One interesting case-in-point is the song “We Be Steady Mobbin,” where Lil Wayne says that he will take your girlfriend, turn her into a hooker, have sex with her and then “murder that b*tch and send her body back to yo ass.” White Supremacist now, are not active in what they have done in the past. They are more like a bunch of prideful, racist people who blatantly voice there hate. So when you hear this line in Lil Wayne’s song, no one’s saying every mind will be impressionable, but how is taking someone’s girlfriend, turning her into a hooker, having sex with her and murdering her and sending her back to you “good?” Or different from white supremacist message? This is what people are subjected to, and it’s not just in the bronx, where I live now, but everywhere, even in other countries. The messages sent in music is either about vulgar things like these or other negative things. Money and fame, to turn out exactly like the artist you’re listening to, just to become a drug addict, go to jail, hurt others, and get hurt yourself, even get STD’s, and waste money on expensive cars, shoes, clothes, drugs, and alcohol. Is that what you really think your purpose in life is for? That’s not “good.” Isn’t that what you see when you look around, maybe even at yourself; a bunch of wannabe Wiz Khalifas or Lil Waynes, and women aren’t much different either. The way people dress, the actions they partake in, even the way people talk. If you ask them why, they all have a story. Something bad that happened in their life that they want to get away from. To be cool. To be “somebody.” They want love, without even knowing what love is. The real reason why isn’t because of the shallow excuses they speak, but because of the deep emptiness inside. They are so indulged in their own sin they think it’s “right,” it’s “good.” It’s not. In an article on entertainment.time.com called “Meet Lecrae, the Christian Rapper Tearing Up the Charts,” they talk about Lecrae and his growing fame. Lecrae is a Christian rapper, he shares Jesus in his rhymes and is very popular. He recently released his new album “Gravity” on September 4th; He’s gotten No. 1 and No. 2 and another spot in the top ten in the iTunes hip hop/rap chart. Christians, but mostly Non-Christians have put him in that spot and have heard his music. Same hip hop and rap beats and sound, different messages. Don’t wallow in your sins. Why live in shallow happiness when you can indulge in deep joy everyday? Don’t waste your life to sex, drugs, alcohol, and money. God loves you, even when you don’t love Him. Even when you spat in his face, blasphemed his name. Artist like Lecrae tells you that. And it’s not just rap and hip hop, there’s Christian country, rock, punk, pop, even heavy metal haha. You can’t love if you don’t know of God’s love for you, who loves you unconditionally. And everything else falls into place. You know your purpose. You enjoy love, in everything; sex in the proper context, the way God made it to be; money and fame, if it is in God’s plan, whether you’re rich or poor, famous or known in a small town, you’ll enjoy your life in Christ; because you don’t live for these things, they don’t own you. You live for God and you enjoy your life in His hands. You enjoy music. See everything else in life isn’t your God; it will always let you down, it won’t give you purpose, and it will always leave your deep emptiness inside, empty. Because sex didn’t get it’s head torn by a crown of thorns for YOU. Fame didn’t take nails in it’s wrist for YOU. Your boyfriend or girlfriend didn’t die for YOUR sins. And they didn’t raise from the dead and ascend into heaven, telling you when your sins die and you fill that Jesus-shaped, deep emptiness inside with God, that you can live forever, because of love and grace; and you can live by love and grace. That’s real love, can’t you see it? That’s the message you need to hear. And music can express that to you, relate to you. Thats the TRUTH that Lil wayne can’t tell you. Jesus is the truth and the missing part from your life, and He loves you and is awaiting for you to love Him back, to give Him your heart, to live for Him; even if you realize it through music. That’s the message that is the point that should be in all music.
