Urgent! A3414643 Rascal | Labrador Retriever/German Shepherd

A3414643 Rascal is a wonderful 13-year-old yellow neutered male Labrador Retriever and German Shepherd mix whose former owners left him at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on July 14th because they no longer wanted the responsibility of having a dog. Weighing 61 lbs, Rascal charmed our volunteers with his happy, easy-going disposition. He savors human attention and is so glad just to sit by your side. He walks well on leash, seems to be housebroken, and is relaxed around other dogs. Rascal seems to have some arthritis in his back end and has a hernia. Given his age, it is unlikely the hernia needs any treatment, but his adopter should take him to the vet for a senior wellness exam to make sure he’s feeling his best. Rascal is a gentle, loving dog who will be a fantastic addition to any loving home.

Adopted! A3738891 Pepper | Flat Coated Retriever

A3738891 Pepper is an endearing 14-year-old black neutered male Flat Coated Retriever whose former owners left him at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on August 12th because they felt he was too old. Weighing 49 lbs, Pepper’s situation breaks our hearts. His impound number tells us he was adopted from a Los Angeles County animal shelter as a much younger dog and he clearly has not been cared for well. Now he suffers from what we guess is significant arthritis, he needs a compassionate rescue or adopter to get him veterinary care.  Per Pepper’s former owners, he gets along well with kids and other dogs, and we see nothing but sweetness in this old dog. Pepper will be a rewarding companion to the caring person or rescue who steps up to make the sunset of his life the best yet.

Urgent! A4471051 Rocky | German Shepherd (TRANSFERRED TO AGOURA SHELTER)

A4471051 Rocky is a gentlemanly 5-year-old neutered male German Shepherd whose former owner left him at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on March 28th because they said they had allergies. Weighing 76 lbs, Rocky is a magnificent boy with a regal face that he is happy to have you kiss. He is affectionate, loyal and smart. He is playfully curious around other dogs, but does come on strong so could use some guidance in proper introduction as not all dogs will appreciate his greeting style. Sadly, he seems to have been neglected: his ears have fly strikes, which is evidence of living largely outdoors, and he has a somewhat odd gait that we think should be examined by an outside veterinarian. Still, it’s clear that Rocky has so much love in his heart,  he will be a devoted best friend in a loving home that can give him some initial TLC.  He will reward you with his loyalty and kisses forever.

New! A4514864 Thor | German Shepherd/Chow Chow

A4514864 Thor is a debonair 5-year-old brown-and-black neutered male German Shepherd and Chow Chow mix who came to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on July 23rd as an owner surrender because they neglected to provide training for Thor. Weighing 50 lbs, Thor is a smart, poised, curious dog with a highly expressive face. He seems to be a blank slate for leash training and is very happy to meet other dogs. Thor’s athletic good looks will make him a neighborhood favorite on walks and his intelligent, curious nature will make him a pleasure to train. He loves to invite other dogs to play and we think he’d do great as a buddy for another dog around his own size. Thor is the kind of dog who will thrive on accompanying his people on all kinds of adventures, from hikes to the dog park.

New! A4637803 Bear | German Shepherd

A4637803 Bear is a splendid 5-year-old brown-and-black male German Shepherd who came  to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on August 5th as an owner surrender for no known reason. Weighing 101 lbs, Bear is a glorious example of his breed, a big and beautiful dog who appears to have been left outside and neglected. He has some fly damage to his ears and he is polite with people but does not appear to have experienced much affection from them in the past. He is polite on leash and is non reactive to other dogs. This majestic dog is ripe for training and socialization as he is gentle and clearly intelligent.  With patience and love an experienced owner can help him blossom into a wonderful, devoted pet.

New! A4658054 Sheila | Pitbull/English Bulldog

A4658054 Sheila is an agreeable 5-year-old fawn spayed female Pit Bull and English Bulldog mix who came to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on July 11th because her family moved and made no provisions for her. Weighing 62 lbs, Sheila is a big sugarlump! She has the classic English Bulldog personality, laid-back and sweet. This gentle girl loves people and walks nicely on leash. Her former family seems to have given her little training or exposure to the world, so everything she encounters seems new and perhaps a little overwhelming. In the right family, she will blossom. Sheila is a pretty and unusual-looking dog with a great personality. She deserves a home as special as she is.

UHA Foster—Adopter Needed!

A4677808 Zuli | Pit Bull Mix

My name is Zuli and I am looking for my forever home (hopefully around San Diego, where I am located!) I am about 18-months-old and I am a bluenose Pit Bull mix puppy. I am full of lots of puppy energy! I adore playing with other dogs and get very excited around playtime. I currently live with FIVE other doggies who are my best friends, and I am currently being trained how to control my energy level. When I go to my new home, I will need to continue to work with trainer so I can become the best canine citizen there is! I ride very well in the car and I am currently potty trained. I know how to listen to my foster mama and will only chew on appropriate toys. I walk very well on leash, and I also know many commands! I know "sit," "wait," "down," "leave it," "stay," and "easy." I also know "shake" and "roll over" (both ways!). I get along very well with older children and can respect younger children, but I probably shouldn't live with them since I might accidentally knock them over with my energy and enthusiasm.

He is goofy, affectionate and has an infectious excitement for life. He has a medium energy level and will fit into most active homes. Plus, Simba has had some training, he already knows sit and give paw!  He is a superstar smart boy who is as funny as he is mature. He will bring balance and fun to any loving home that can take the time to enjoy his young age.  This gregarious guy will keep you entertained and covered in kisses. There is never a dull moment with Simba.

Weighing 53 lbs, Sheba has personality plus! She loves to snuggle and she is polite with other dogs. Our volunteer who has spent time with her calls her “a total sweetheart.” This smart girl loves toys and will pick and choose to find a favorite to frolic with. Sheba is mannerly and relaxed, but always ready to play. She walks well on leash, seems to be housebroken, and is eager to learn new skills if you’d like to teach her. Weighing 76 lbs, Lenny is a cuddly, loving boy. He is attentive, smart and already walks well on leash. Lenny is a giant lovebug who shows the maturity of an elderly gentleman, but do not let this fool you, he is still a young baby!  He shows signs of housebreaking and is calm and docile. In Foster Care - Available for Adoption! A5173006 Hardy | German Shepherd

A5173006 Hardy is an affectionate 4-year-old black-and-tan neutered male German Shepherd who was found as a stray on April 27th and brought to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center. Weighing 70 lbs, Hardy is a friendly boy who greets everyone with a wagging tail. Plus, he politely asks for attention by extending his paw gently. Hardy walks well on leash and shows signs of being housebroken. He loves to run around in the shelter’s play area, for this reason, we think he would be happiest in a home where he has some outdoor space to enjoy. Hardy has some alopecia on his lower back that has been improving at the shelter; he should see a private veterinarian after adoption to continue his care. Hardy is an all-around wonderful dog who will be an amazing indoor companion in a forever home that loves German Shepherds.

A5174274 Huera is a delightful 1-year-old gold-and-cream spayed female Pit Bull and Shar Pei mix puppy who was adopted from the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center and returned on June 12th because her adopters weren’t prepared to add a dog to the home. Weighing 55 lbs, Huera is an adorable low-rider (leading some of our volunteers to speculate that she also has some Corgi heritage) with a a happy smile. She greets everyone she meets with wiggles and kisses. Huera has a wonderfully soft coat and is a great cuddle buddy. Huera knows how to walk on leash, sits on command, and seems to be housebroken. She passed her shelter-administered temperament test. Huera is calm around other dogs on leash, but doesn’t love some dogs getting into her personal space.  We are therefore recommending she be the queen of her own castle. While out with our volunteers, she was happy to meet and greet other dogs on leash. New! A5184071 Dorian | Pit Bull

A5184071 Dorian is a friendly 2-year-old grey male Pit Bull mix who was found as a stray and brought to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on May 30th. Weighing approximately 60 lbs, Dorian is attentive and eager to be pet and be near his human. In the noisy shelter environment, he has struggled with being leashed: when you leash him, he just lies flat--or “pancakes”--in fear. Dorian feels much more secure in the company of other dogs, and if you walk him on leash with another dog, he does very well. We think once out of the shelter and given appropriate guidance and support (including basic obedience training), Dorian will really flourish. He is a happy, fun, sporty boy who is meant to be someone’s cherished sidekick. He loves treats and the positive reinforcement of praise and affection, so we expect he will learn very quickly and be an ideal walking companion in no time. Dorian will be a fantastic best friend to an active person or family with older kids and previous experience with larger-breed dogs.

Weighing 51 lbs, Dustin won over the hearts of our volunteers with his goofy, silly personality. He loves to dole out kisses, be cuddled, roll on his back, and, most of all, get belly rubs. Dustin is sporty, fun and for sure would like to join you on regular walks or hikes. He has puppy energy and really likes to play. He also settles down well and will gladly curl up at your feet in the evening. Dustin would benefit from some basic obedience training, but he does show signs of being housebroken and understands how to walk on a leash. He is attentive and treat-motivated which can help  make  learning a breeze. In fact, our volunteer was able to teach the “sit” command in about five minutes!  With his adorable superhero mask and lean Boxer legs, Dustin is also one handsome fellow. In the shelter’s playgroups, he especially enjoys the company of female dogs and gets a little pushy with male dogs,  he might do best paired with a female or as a solo dog. Dustin passed his shelter-administered temperament test with flying colors. He will  be an awesome best friend and activity partner to the lucky person or family who makes him a part of their home.

Astro has a bit of a comedian in him, he is quite the goofball and had our volunteers laughing during his photoshoot and video. Though his real passion is a career as a lapdog.   Astro will need all of the other puppy basics, including leash work, especially given his size. He’ll also need to be introduced to other dogs slowly and learn how to properly socialize with them since he can be a bit excited. Astro, however is not a blank slate for training as he already knows how to sit and give paw on command. Astro is an athletic looking guy with  unique looks. Astro will be great in an active household that will give him the training and attention he needs.

A5188862 Mama Cass is an amazing 1-year-old spayed female chocolate Pit Bull and Dogue de Bordeaux mix puppy whose former owner left her at the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on June 12th for no known reason. Weighing 72 lbs, Mama Cass is a charming, happy, and sociable girl who relishes human company and who gets along great with other dogs. She listens attentively and really wants to please you, which makes her a great candidate for additional obedience training. She already knows how to walk on leash, sit on command and she seems to be housebroken, so she already has a good foundation in terms of obedience skills. Of course, Mama Cass sailed through her shelter-administered temperament test. She is an older soul in the body of a puppy, she is mature and gentle beyond her years.   This loving, happy girl strikes us as an ideal family dog who would do well in a multi-dog household or in a family with kids. Mama Cass is going to be a fantastic best friend in any active, loving forever home, and would be a great choice for the first-time guardian of a larger-breed or bully-type dog.

Urgent! A5202713 Alaska | German Shepherd

A5202713 Alaska is a resilient 6-year-old white neutered male German Shepherd who was surrendered to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on July 22nd because his owners couldn’t handle the financial responsibility of a dog. Weighing 69 lbs, Alaska will be absolutely beautiful once he’s had a spa day and has good nutrition and affection every day. He seems to have been quite neglected and maybe left outside for most of his life with fly strikes on his ears, missing teeth, and calluses on his elbows. He has a skin condition that we think will improve after a visit to the veterinarian with his adopter. Alaska is  feeling a little shy in the chaotic shelter environment.  Even with all the strikes against him, Alaska was so gentle and sweet with our volunteers that our hearts melted, and despite keeping his tail between his legs he was appropriately friendly and curious about people and the other dogs he met. He could use some basic training and is likely to learn quickly when given a chance and some encouragement. We think he will be a great calm and loving family dog once he’s cleaned up and brought indoors to be a central member of a household that values him.

New! A5206970 Guiness | German Shepherd/Belgian Shepherd

A5206970 Guiness is a handsome 7-year-old  black-and-tan male German Shepherd and Belgian Shepherd mix who was found as a stray and brought  to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on August 4th. Weighing 77 lbs, Guiness is a people-centered dog who wants to be close to his handler and listens to  every command. He has the intelligence and devotion that make German Shepherds so popular. Guiness walks respectably on leash and will learn additional obedience skills quickly--he just wants to work and make you happy. He has an incredibly lucious and soft coat, and is happy to have you cuddle him. Guiness has clearly spent too much time outdoors because he has fly strikes on his ears, and he deserves to be an indoor companion who is fully integrated into everyday activities. We noticed Guiness is a bit insecure around unfamiliar dogs so we are recommending that he be the only dog while his adopters learn more about his preferences and help him develop his social skills. Guiness will be a devoted best friend in a forever home that wants him to truly be part of the family.

Weighing 8 lbs, Rolando is a spunky fellow who is eager to know what is going on around him and meet all the people he sees. Rolando has a cute black muzzle against his pretty reddish tan fur.  He is affectionate and likes to be held, and he’s good on leash. Rolando is a great size to go to the office and he would love to be a go-anywhere and everywhere with you guy. The busy, noisy shelter is a little overstimulating for Rolando, and he’s likely to settle happily into a home routine with regular walks and attention so he feels secure. Right now he’s very excited (maybe a bit too eager) to meet so many new doggie neighbors and he loves them all! He may come on a little strong for some of them and would benefit from training for proper introductions. Adorable Rolando will be happy to join in any kind of fun with people who give him the training and socialization he needs.

Isaac shares his kennel with other smaller dogs and gets along well with all of them. He arrived at the shelter filthy and with heavily matted fur, going forward, he will need regular grooming to keep him looking and feeling his best. Courtesy Post! Kuma | Siberian Husky / Shepherd

MEET Kuma: She is about 2 years old and weighs between 45-50 pounds.. She is doing well with my friends dog, but would definitely do better in a home where there probably are not more than 2 other dogs (and dogs that are not extra hyper). She loves people, seems okay with children (she sniffed some at petsmart) but would probably not be okay with children uder 10 years old (because of their excitement level). She definitely needslove and attention. She spends most of her time relaxing, and does really well on walks! I believe we're planning to take her to the dog park in a couple days.

She does appear to be well taken care of, however, it is our hope that she finds a permanent home as an indoor pet and companion where she’s safe from outside dangers.
