Question
How can we take away magnetism from a magnet?
Prediction
We predict that freezing will take away the magnetism.
Equipment list
hand cream
5 magnets
freezer
cup of boiling water
plastic
hammer
Fair Testing
We will keep the iron the same,we will use the same magnets,we will keep the magnet for the same time and we will change object each time we record the experiment and keep the spot the same when we see if it’s magnetic.
method
1.Firstly we will gather all the equipment we need.
2.secondly we will spread the hand cream on the magnet.
3.Then we will see if the magnet is still magnetic and record it.
4.After that we will put the magnet in the freezer for 5min.
5.Then we see if its still magnetic and record it
6.Then wrap the magnet in some plastic.
7.After that we will see if the iron gets attracted by the magnet and record it.
8.Finally for our last experiment we will smash the magnet.
9.Then we will see if the iron still sick to the magnet and record it.
10.Lastly we will see wichon took away the magnetism.
Recording
we will write the results in a table on the computer.
How strong Results Magnetic?
plastic | still strong | good | yes |
Hand cream | very strong | good | yes |
Smash | weaker | good | yes |
boiling | stayed | good | yes |
freezing | weaker | good | yes |
Comment from Mr Grimshaw. Good idea to smash the magnet last!
however, since you are using the same actual magnet for each experiment, each time you do something to the magnet (add hand cream, put in the freezer) it might change the magnet in some way which would affect the following experiment. This makes it an unfair test. How could you get around this?
Conclusion
The prediction was wrong.
We tried five methods but it didn't work.
Next time, we could have tried more methods.
Well done! Your initial idea for an investigation is very good. I wonder whether you could include more detail in your conclusion next time. Also, it might be a good idea to explain why you think your prediction will be correct.
