In 2018 Vermont became the first state to include standardized testing in k-12 Physical Education. This is in connection with ESSA federal law that names Physical Education as a vital part of every child's k-12 education.

Vermont AOE is still working on the implementation. JES took part in the pilot program last year.

Here’s what we know:

  1. We will be using the FitnessGram test to test in 4 or 5 fitness levels ranging from Cardiorespiratory Endurance and VO2max, Muscular Endurance and Flexibility.
  2. The Brockport Alternative Fitness Assessment will be used to assess students with special needs.
  3. Student’s names will be coded and should go to the State in similar fashion to all other standardized tests.
  4. The testing window will be April 1 - May 31.
  5. Only 4th grade results will be reported.

I have been using the FitnessGram assessment tool for over a decade here at JES and while I do not grade on fitness levels the test gives me great information that is used to drive curriculum. An example would be,  three years ago I added additional cardio and strength training elements into every second thru fourth grade class (see “superhero workouts” below), partly due to information gain from our fitness assessments. I was also able to report on improvements to upper body strength after the installation of our new playground.

Standardized testing in physical education, if used to benefit our students, is a positive step forward.

Best regards,

Mr. Steinman
