Dear [NAME OF YOUR MP],
I hope you are keeping well during this pandemic. I am emailing you today to raise the issue of the current humanitarian crisis facing Yemen. The situation is dire and you have the power to help.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Oxfam has found evidence of UK arms exports to Saudi Arabia continuing despite the UK government giving its support for a global ceasefire. "Flight records show that BAE Systems sent a cargo plane to Saudi Arabia in late April. There are concerns that its cargo could include spare parts or weapons for use in the conflict in Yemen," the Oxfam report states.
After five years of war and £15 billion worth of arms sales from BAE Systems to Saudi Arabia, Yemen's infrastructure and healthcare system have been totally decimated. 112,000 civilians have already died in the war from airstrikes and the conflict has created the world's largest humanitarian crisis with a child dying every 10 minutes.
As the Covid-19 pandemic ravages through Yemen, the death toll of Covid-19 related deaths is expected to exceed the number of fatalities from five years of war. The situation is dire and Yemenis are living in a country with a crippled health system and bombed hospitals. Moreover, around half of Yemen's hospitals are currently running after the UN lacks $1 billion in funding and had to close half of the country's hospitals. The UN further ran out of funding for 10,000 frontline healthcare workers across Yemen as the pandemic began.
The city of Aden now has 60 hospital beds for Covid-19 patients and 18 ventilators. Aden has a population of 800,000 thus, consequently, most patients are denied treatment and those with treatable diseases are dying due to the lack of healthcare.
Alongside Covid-19, fighting continues in the country and the country is still facing a cholera outbreak with 100,000 civilians impacted. A mosquito-transmitted virus outbreak (Chikungunya virus) is impacting civilians and whilst civilians face malnutrition, many malnutrition centres have been closed due to the lack of funding.
Sky News footage has revealed the extent of human suffering in the country and has said: "Coronavirus will delete Yemen from maps all over the world".
As my MP, I urge you to take this issue to Parliament and pressure the government to act on the crisis. I further urge you to pressure the government for more aid to be delivered to Yemen (as the majority of the population relies on it) and to provide funding for the country's healthcare system. I urge you to pressure the government to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia immediately and to raise the issue of ongoing fighting amid the pandemic. Furthermore, I ask that you vocalise your support for Yemenis and use your political power to address the issues.
Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards,
